View Full Version : Original Star Wars Trilogy on DVD
Doctor Manhattan

official statement (http://www.starwars.com/episode-iv/news/2004/02/news20040210.html)
I had no idea there was a plan to even do this, or that people wanted to get it on DVD. I figured they sold it on VHS about 5 different times in the past few years that everyone had enough by now...
I guess it will look very much like the Indiana Jones DVD. I wonder if they'll have the roman numerals on the spine like Episode I and II have on DVD...

As a geek, this pisses me off a bit - the "Indiana Jones" Trilogy isn't the model Lucas should look at, but rather what Spielberg did with "E.T." when he released both the original version of the movie and then the new edited version he released 25 years later.
The movies should be available on their own with both movies and the extras on a second disc.

I think he wanted to avoid having Return of the Jedi sell less than the other two.

You notice how nowhere in the official announcement does it say that these are the "Special Edition" releases? Those crafty bastards.
I'll still buy it, of course. I'll just be angry about it.

Lucas is sticking to his guns about the original released (and rerelease for the next few years) verisons of the movies not being finished. So no 1977 version of Episode IV because he didn't "finish" it until 20 years later.
I'll buy it no matter what but I'll be very happy if he fixes the things that really messed up the movie.
I don't mind him updating the Special Effects, or adding Jabba to Star Wars, But having Greedo Shot first changes the story and changes Han as a character. Now if he wanted Greedo to shoot first he didn't have to wait 20 years for Technology to catch up to his imagination, he could have filmed it that way.
There have been rumors of additional fixes to the 1997 special editions (including redoing lightsabers and putting the Han shooting first back the way it was) But this will probably not be on the DVD this september.
If they add Jimmy Smitts looking up before Alderan is blowed up, then I'm not buying it! ;p

Yeah, hacks tend to do that.

What will Lucas do after Episode III comes out? They'll be some more work to do for the DVD, then maybe some work to do for a complete I-VI box set.
But will he move on and make another movie? It'll suck and not have the Star Wars story behind it. It's not like he has to do anything, but if he's itching to make movies hopefully he'll do something written by someone else.

Current rumor is 7-9 will be done, but directed by other people. Blame Chewbacca for starting that one.
There's also a rumor that the movies themselves will contain commentaries by Lucas himself.
And the announcement doesn't have to say SEs. Lucas has said he will never allow the originals to be shown again.

I hope they digitally re-master Wicket the Ewok to be the size of Chewbacca and then take Chewie and shrink him down to Ewok, wouldn't that rule, guys, to see a three-foot tall Chewie? I know I for one would like to see that; and I'd like it if underneath his mask and cloak Darth Vader were really a gaint ewok, too!

I saw those on some DVD sites. I don't think they will be releasing 3 boxes like that, probably just 2 versions for Widescreen and Fullscreen, and really just color variations of the same art like Indy's DVD or the Star Wars VHS Boxes (Gold and Silver)
Those pics were "leaked" but I don't think any of them are final designs.
Plus what about the Roman Numerals on the Spines? Lucas is all about having people think the original movies are really the 4th, 5th and 6th chapters, so why not have IV V and VI on the spines to match up with the I and II on the current DVDs?

I'm sure after all is said and done, Lucas WILL indeed put out the original set, that greedy bastard will not be able to ignore the profit potential...
As for Lucas tweaking the trilogy, another rumor was that he was going to render all of the Ewoks in the final battle scene CGI, and make the battle more serious, not stormtroopers getting their asses kicked by teddy bears..

Just thought I'd let you guys see the full picture. Starwars.com wants you to pay to see the images $4/month. Fuck that, I found them on www.hometheaterforum.com. And I like how they put the "Hyperspace" logo on both sides of the box, like it's not easy to photochop it out.
Looks a lot like the Special Editon VHS set (the first one) Silver for widescreen, Gold for those suckers who get fullscreen.
Doesn't say "Special Edition" (or "Original edition") so I guess this indeed is a new version of the films (without a special name, since the original version "no longer exists.")
And by calling these 3 films "Star Wars Trilogy" does that mean they are admitting that the new movies doesn't match up to the originals and don't really fit in like they were all really part of a larger saga?

changes to the DVD edition of the original trilogy from Film Threat (http://www.filmthreat.com/News.asp?Id=2110)
Hayden Christensen replacing the ghost image of Sebastian Shaw at the end of "Jedi"
Naboo featured in the celebration scene at the end of "Jedi"
Also of note are the missing eyebrows from Anakin's face when his helmet is removed from at the end of "Jedi"
the replacement of that old crummy Emperor in "Empire" with Ian McDiarmid
And the replacement of that crummy new CG Jabba in "New Hope" with a better, still crummy CG Jabba

The eyebrows of actor Sebastian Shaw have been erased in the new version.
http://www.thedigitalbits.com/reviews3/starwars/6-03-2004.jpg
Anakin's Force ghost is now played by Hayden Christensen instead of Sebastian Shaw.
These are some of the changes made to Return of the Jedi for the DVD. I don't mind the changes. But I will ask a really geeky question:
It looks like they didn't change Obi Wan to Evan Mcgregor for the ghost of Obi Wan for the reason of, perhaps, the Ghost looks like the character at the time of their death (or becoming more powerful than you can imagaine, leaving this plane of existance, whatever)
If Anakin/Darth Vader looks like Sebastian Shaw at the end of ROTJ (Luke takes off his mask) then why does he go back 30 years or so to what he looked like when he becomes a ghost? Yoda looks like the puppet just like when he died in ROTJ, not the younger GCI Yoda that flies around with a lightsaber.
Here's the original:

i'd assume it would have something to do with 'vader killing anakin' ...
all the geeky spoilers for episode III have anakin 'dying' and being reborn bay the emperor and the dark side ....
then there's the line 'he's more machine now than man; twisted and evil' from jedi ... and 'darth vader betrayed and murdered your father' from episode IV ...

Why does Lucas INSIST on screwing with these classic movies?!?!
Remastering them is one thing. Re-shooting scenes is retarded!!
They're over 20 years old!
LEAVE THEM ALONE!
OR............
Do what others have, and put both versions on the DVD. This way you can have a choice!
I might go get the boot DVD's and be done with it.
Or just stick with good old VHS. :eg:

I was a HUGE fan of Star Wars but, this latest crap is really bothering me. The prequels totally suck AND they dont make sense...fine. But why would he spend any time and money making changes to the original trilogy?! And why does he even bother to change peoples eyebrows or make a new "more colorful" sunset yet...he doesn't include the deleted scenes that fans are REALLY longing for.
They shot several scenes where the young Luke is on Tattooine. He is interacting with Biggs and his friends (and watching the Star Destroyer fire fight through his binoculars). Those scenes actually add to the plot of the movie! They're available on the SW BEHIND THE MAGIC cd-roms...why not edit them into the dvd?
I bought STAR WARS: THE DEFINITIVE EDITION many years ago on LaserDisc. Since then...Lucas has released those movies 3 times, each one more "definitive" than the last.
Fuck that guy.

That sucks. I just found this at "The Digital Bits":
The production photos are very cool to see, but they're also a little frustrating because they include images from many deleted scenes we've all been waiting to see for years. That's all fine and good... except none of these actual scenes are included on the disc. That's right - you will not get to see Luke and Biggs on Tatooine from A New Hope, the Wampa attack from Empire, or the sandstorm from Jedi. The fact that they're not here is deliberate and tells you something else - they've been held back for inclusion on a more elaborate special edition release of these films in the future (I actually have word from sources that Lucasfilm is already planning the high-definition box set of the whole 6-film saga, possibly for the original film's 30th anniversary in 2007).I still don't own a HD TV. I don't know if I'll be jumping on the HD-DVD bandwagon whenever they do come out but without an HD I'm in no rush.

Over the weekend I plucked down $40 to get all three original films on DVDs in their (almost) original theatrical selves.
I say "almost" because the first one does have "A NEW HOPE" scrolling at the top, but other than that the film is the original film - complete with Han shooting first.
I'm not sure who produced the discs - these not merely DVD-Rs that were copied from the old VHSs. They have chapters, and special features, and languages, and subtitles. They are all in widesceen, and appear to be in "dolby," but I have no way to verify that.
The films look good - maybe not as crisp as the versions coming out next week. Maybe the person who authored the discs worked from the old laser discs. In any event, they are all pretty solid.
The special features are a little thin - my favorites are the trailers. Three for "Star Wars," three for "Jedi" and one for "Empire."
What a rush seeing the trailers again!! The original STAR WARS ones are excellent trips back in time. The first JEDI one is actually for "REVENGE OF THE JEDI," which I didn't know even existed (I do have the Variety pull out, but I never knew there was a trailer for it). The lone "EMPIRE" trailer is the best!!! WOW! What an amazing trailer - no words or much dialog to speak of; just the familiar music expertly edited together. Kind of fun to see that the best of that trilogy had the best trailer, while ll three of JEDI's were really kind of tired and cheesy.
I guess I'll get the 3 disc set coming out next week; I'm sure BEST BUY will undercut everyone, and will sell it close to cost, so why not?! I know Lucas is taking advantage of me, just like I knew KISS was taking advantage of me during their farewell tour and just as I knew there would be more to the KILL BILL DVDs than what we got.
Some transparency might have been nice - would it be SO tough to be iopen about it??

FYE has it for $35 (but that's after a mail-in rebate) (http://www.fye.com/contentPages/base.jhtml?name=/starwars/home.jhtml&Section=movies&refId=w00hpleftnav)
I'm sure Best Buy and Circuit City will have it for $35-40
The other Star Wars DVDs were VERY cheap at Toys-R-Us when they came out, so keep an eye on them!

I bought an infocus 4805 16x9 projection and built a 96x54" screen as a pre-wedding present for our now place. This adds to our Okyno 6.1 system we bought last christmas.
Can't wait to see and hear that Star Destroyer in the opening in all its glory. =)
I for one am stoked that these movies are finally out on DVD.

I say "almost" because the first one does have "A NEW HOPE" scrolling at the top, but other than that the film is the original film .
it always said "episode iv: a new hope", lucas alway had a plan for 1-3 but said he couldn't do it at the time. and there is supposed to be a 7-9 which someone said earlier. so you still probably have the original theatrical version.
with that being said. now my beef.
how is the continuity going to be kept between all six? it's gotta be a 20 to 30 years in difference from when anakin becomes vader till when he dies.
it's hard for me to believe a 10 year difference between I and II with anakin aging, and amadala staying the same age.

Original theatrical screenings did not have "Episode 4." It started with later prints (about a month later)

"Anakin's Force ghost is now played by Hayden Christensen instead of Sebastian Shaw"
That both sucks & is kinda cool at the same time. It's really cool that the technology exists to pull this off seemlessly (I'm assuming) and pull the episodes together like that. But poor Sebastian Shaw...now his only real 'appearance' in the movie is as the near death, bulbously-bald-headed Vader. They took away his only real face time in the movie.

It's like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I'm sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it. But I want it to be the way I want it to be.
wow, i can understand his point ... but he sounds like such an ass ...
Anybody that makes films knows the film is never finished. It's abandoned or it's ripped out of your hands, and it's thrown into the marketplace, never finished. It's a very rare experience where you find a filmmaker who says, "That's exactly what I wanted. I got everything I needed. I made it just perfect. I'm going to put it out there." And even most artists, most painters, even composers would want to come back and redo their work now. They've got a new perspective on it, they've got more resources, they have better technology, and they can fix or finish the things that were never done.
except spielberg (who presented both versions on dvd) with e.t., how many other directors have gone back and tweaked their works ...?
has there been another piece of art or pop culture that has been revisited by its creator and been significally altered ...?

it's hard for me to believe a 10 year difference between I and II with anakin aging, and amadala staying the same age.
The continuity is all over the map. Especially when you see how old Alec Guiness is in Episode 4, and Ewen's age in Episodes 2/3. Also, the age of Anakin at the end of Jedi kind of hints that there was some serious time between Jedi and Empire (and Empire and the original Star Wars).
After all, we know that it took at least 20 years to build the first Death Star, and then they had a second one 2/3 of the way done by the time of Jedi.
Episode 1 - Anakin is a 10 year old brat - Obi Wan is 20ish?
Episode 2 - 8 years later (?) - Anakin is 18 - Obi Wan is 30ish?
Episode 3 - ? - I'm guessing it's an additional 10 years
Episode 4 - 18 years after episode 2 or 3 (based on Luke's age) - Anakin/Darth Vader in his 40s; Obi Wan is 50 - 60 ish
Episode 5 - ?
Episode 6 - ? Anakin is clearly an old man - 15 - 20 years have passed since "Episode 4" between"Episode 6"?
I'm sure someone nearly as geeky as me has figured this all out - too bad that person wasn't Lucas!
I still believe Lucas blew it by starting this series off where he did; it should have started with Episode 2 - introduce Anakin as a starling, obnoxious teenager with a chip on his shoulder - we get the back story about how Obi Wan got "custody" of him, and they move it forward.
They let the love story drag out through the first and second movie / have him turn evil by the end of the second movie, unknown to his young bride, and then in the 3rd move we have an all out Darth Vader adventure, instead of (what I'm assuming) only a brief appearance of Vader at the end of the current one.
((sigh))
If only...

it's more like 3 years ... according to the time line at the force.net (http://www.theforce.net/timeline/) , EPII takes place 22 years before the battle of yavin and EPIII is 19 years ...
Episode 6 - ? Anakin is clearly an old man - 15 - 20 years have passed since "Episode 4" between"Episode 6"?
i think he's aged more by the fall into the darside ...

Nah. Star Wars is like Barbara Eden. You might have thought she looked pretty good in the seventies, but she hit the wall hard, and now, despite the reputation, she's not so appealing, even with all the plastic surgery.

Well, I was lucky enough to get the DVD's on Sat.
Did a quick chapter thing just to see how it looked and sounded. VERY NICE!
Watched SW yesterday. Much improved! One thing I noticed was that you could tell parts of scenes were filmed at different times. The audio for certain dialog goes up and down a little. Also, when they fall in the garbage compactor, you can barely here the dialog at times. Overall, very good though. And yes the redone Jaba scene is much better than the cartoony version from '97
Watched Empire tonight. Flawless! There is SOOO much more color now! A pleasure! One little thing of note is that Boba Fett's voice is now the actor from Clones. The sound is loud and hits hard!
I'll watch Jedi tomorrow!

I read on the DigitalBits website that a number of people are complaining about the audio on some of the DVD's, see here... (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/mytwocentsa94.html#ep4audio)
Plus there's a link to an interesting George Lucus interview that CNN did with him.

Lucas is really only hurting himself by showing clips of the "newer" movies on the DVD. Everything looks so damn fake in those with all the CGI. The making-of documentary shows how they had to go to England to film, just because it's one of the few places in the world with studios big enough to hold the MASSIVE sets they needed to make. Now, they just build the sets like knee-high, if that, and shoot the rest in front of a blue screen and fill it in later.

First thing I did was pop in JEDI and skip to the last scene to see if the rumors were true...
ugh!
Just insulting seeing Hayden Christensen in there next to Yoda and Alec Guiness. I actually thought the other tweaks at the end improved Jedi (with scenes of all of the worlds celebrating), but seeing the limp-dicked Anakin just about ruins the whole geeky time for me.
