They Live is such a good movie. I can't decide if it's a really good "B" movie, or a fair "A" movie.

I vote for really good "B" movie. I like it too though. Was it ever in theaters?

It was. I'd say okay/mediocre B movie.

A book or short story called 'Eight O'Clock in the Morning'.

Guilty as charged, I'm a John Carpenter fan, meaning fanatic. He pisses me off by putting out Shit Sandwiches like Ghosts of Mars, but Halloween, The Fog, They Live, The Thing, Escape from NY?

All awesome, all with a large sprinkling of cheese, often intentional by Carpenter. Like in They Live, which has what I believe is one of the longest man-to-man fight sequences ever put on film, featuring Roddy and Keith David duking it out forever.

Top to Bottom: Nice clothesline, Roddy! And that ain't no Roddy stand-in. Then off to rob a bank, and the infamous line:

I came here to Chew Bubblegum, and Kick Ass...

and I'm all out of Bubblegum...

And the awesome Keith David and Roddy in the fight. Rent it for this sequence alone. Keith David rocks as an actor [Something about Mary, Requiem for a Dream]; and is used for voice overs you hear All Over TV and Radio.

I'd say it is one of the greatest fight sequences ever. Fight as in mano y mano.

I can't recall if it was Trey Parker or Matt Stone, but one of them recently said that the fight sequence in a South Park episode when the two cripples are fighting each other was choreographed move by move from the They Live fight scene.

Hosp Come ON!!

Seriously, this seemed like a real springboard role for Piper. I think his acting was great in the flick; although playing a loner with a short fuse might not be a stretch; he certainly held his own with David Keith, whose career has exploded.

Carpenter really pisses me off, because his movies can run great and terrible, and that's in the same movie. They Live starts out well, but I think peters out, though the ending is classic carpenter.

"What's the matter, baby?"

[Edit: oh, another reason Carpenter rocks; he plays most if not all of the incidental movie music himself. Many of those scary Carpenter soundtracks are mostly Carpenter himself. He can play the synth and keys well, look what he did with a simple riff like in "Halloween"?]

Did anyone else see the South Park episode where the 2 handicapped kids did a reinactment of the fight scene from this movie? It was hilarious.

I didn't see anything, I didn't hear anything, I wasn't there and if I was there I was asleep.

As far as I recall they both talked about it. It was on the VH1 Goes Behind South Park special.

Brilliant movie.

I recently saw this on cable - and I'll say this: Piper did some damn good acting in the movie until he walked into the bank with the shotgun. Then he turned into action hero guy.

With that, comes this news:

Universal, Strike Developing They Live
Source: The Hollywood Reporter December 4, 2008

John Carpenter's cult 1988 film They Live is getting the remake treatment from Universal and studio-based Strike Entertainment, which are in negotiations to acquire the film rights with rights holder Les Mougins, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Strike's Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will produce, while Shep Gordon of Les Mougins and Carpenter will serve as executive producers.

The original film, part sci-fi thriller and part social satire, told the story of a down-on-his-luck construction worker (Roddy Piper) who discovers glasses that let him see aliens walking among us and controlling humanity. The man races against the clock to find a way to stop them.

Strike had success in the remake arena with 2004's update of Dawn of the Dead. Strike is also working on a remake of Carpenter's The Thing.

Bull fucking shit! Stop re-making classic crappy movies! I liked Dawn od the Dead, They Live and the Thing they way they were made by people with talent. I dont need some hacks "reimagining".

If I can remove the academic, judgmental part of my brain then this movie is one of my top ten of all time. If I get all pretentious about it like usual, then it's my favorite B movie.

hollywood needs to make a "no remakes until you start putting out great original shit for x number of years" law. leave shitty b movies the way they are. with out the campy b aspect it's just really really bad crap.

I honestly wish they'd just have a "no remakes" rule altogether.

I love "They Live." I saw it in the theater when it was originally released and have always been proud of that fact.

Hollywood is remaking everything, and it's going to happen regardless of what I think. I have finally come to the point where I am able to completely separate my enjoyment of the original from the new versions. Some I might like, others I ignore, but I try to keep the experiences separate.

I'm a fucking huge John Carpenter fan. They Live is in the Holy Trinity with Big Trouble in Little China and Escape from New York. I'd definitely put it firmly in the amazing B movie category above fair A movie status.

As far as a remake goes, it won't take away any enjoyment I have of the original, so fuck it. I've found myself enjoying the hell out of a lot of the new horror remakes, but as far as touching genre classics like this, Hollywood hasn't done too well. Case in point, the remake of Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13. It went from being a tale of the randomness of gang violence and being in the wrong place at the wrong time, to being a typical hacky corrupt cops story.

I do still like They Live, and I realized that all the movies I like from that specific time (i.e. Repo Man) are full of tv brainwashed people who watch tv outdoors (for some reason).
