Cingular buying AT&T Wireless (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4284965/)

If you had AT&T for your cell, looks like you'll have Cingular soon.

I've talked to lots of folks who've used Cingular and have heard nothing but bad things, from service, to coverage, to calls dropping out. I think this deal will benefit Cingular customers far more than AT&T customers.

What I'd like to know is, if your carrier is taken over do you have the right to move to a different carrier? I'd like to switch to Verizon.

i got out of my att contract about 2 years ago when they made a price change. I saw the fine print that said if you don't want the change you can cancle your service w/not fees. When i changed to verizon the saleswomen (she was one hot redhead) said she used to work for att and that they and cingular used the same networkand that they were talking about the merge/sale back then.

Vonage and Cingular were competing for AT&T Wireless, but Vonage dropped out, thinking ATT weren't worth the cash.

reef, you may have to wait until your current contract expires, but with LNP, you can take you current number with you.

Keep in mind, changes won't happen overnight. Just because the deal was annouced last night/this morning doesn't mean they'll own it next week.

I'm just a few months into a 2 year contract with AT&T. I know, It's my own damn fault!

I didn't know Cingular was a bigger company (well bigger than AT&T Wireless which I guess is seperate from AT&T)

I'm with AT&T and their service is great in my area. Their customer service, however, sucks ass. You always get stuck with some idiot who doesn't know a thing about your phone and is just reading the same thing I can off of a computer screen. Cingular, T-Mobile, and AT&T all run off the same network. People who say, "Cingular sucks in this area but AT&T is great!" and the like are probably having problems with their phone.

Apparently some areas work good with AT&T. Mine however, suck balls. Everyone I know with an AT&T phone gets shitty reception. We're all on Long Island so maybe thats it.

AT&T and Cingular aren't really on "the same network". They have reciprocal agreements where towers that are run by one can be used by another in a form of roaming. AT&T runs more of the towers in the NE and Cingular runs more in the South. Cingular was the old "Cellular One" which got bought by SBC and became Cingular when BellSouth bought in.

Geek speak: Both AT&T and Cingular used TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) while Verizon used CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) for many years (CDMA is a little more robust, since you can fit more conversations into the same amount of space, especially if there are periods of "silence"). Both AT&T and Cingular have been changing over to GSM (used primarily in Europe), which is quickly becoming a standard here, and is more flexible than either TDMA or CDMA. It is also supposed to result in fewer dropped calls and allow for GPRS (for sending data).

I've had Cingular ever since it was Cellular One, and the only times I've ever had problems with the service was during 9-11 (cell towers down and busy in S. Manhattan) and the Blackout (Cell towers out and overloaded there too).

I can forsee some benefits to AT&T customers, especially those who use their phones as wireless modems, as AT&T didn't allow that in some locations.

The real issue should be that these big corporations are essentially playing 'Monopoly' with our money!!! why do we continue to let them get away with it?

I was immensely pissed at the prospect last week of Comcast buying Disney, all I could think was, "and they raised our cable rates this year becauuuuuuse......?"
