View Full Version : Show us papers!

One balmy May
evening back in 2000, Dudley was standing around
minding his own business when all of a sudden, a
policeman pulled-up and demanded that Dudley produce
his ID.’ Dudley, having done nothing wrong, declined.’ He
was arrested and charged with "failure to cooperate" for
refusing to show ID on demand.’ (http://papersplease.org/hiibel/)
here's the thing, I don't think the police or anyone should
be able to come up and demand ID. First off, there is no
national id system so not everyone has one. Second, it is
on of the many freedoms we enjoy, moving around
without papers or permits.
that being said, he said didn't "do nothin' wrong". But he was
involved in a public disturbance with that screaming
woman. a complain was called in to 911. So while I think
the police have every right to see his ID in this instance,
merely refusing to cooperate in an investigation should not
be a cause for arrest.
I'm very interested to see what the Supreme courts says
on this.
*edit* That should have been show us your papers

Reminds me of an incident back at my alma mater that apparently got the whole campus all upset against the University Police. Personally I think the students were absolutely wrong.

I think that link was just a way for toocute to rub it in that she went to brown :)
Anyway when i was 17 i drove a blazer with rims and a loud stereo. I was driving through a rich whote town at night and got pulled over. I rooled down the window when the cop came and once he saw i was white, he just let me know. No license or ID. Just asked where I was going. I know if i was black it would have been a long night.

Oh, of course the probably will. But really all you have to answer is where you're coming from. I have a friend (a lawyer) who was pulled over (forget what for) and refused to answer a cop when he asked her where she was going; she said I don't know. He got all pissy and started threatening to arrest her if she didn't tell him; she suggested he call his sarge and ask him about it. Boss was like you dumb fuck, no, she doesn't have to answer that, and the cop was so embarassed that he basically muttered an apology and just walked away.

Why, are non-blacks forbidden from reading the black one?
I know the frustration I feel when my TV's B-chip switches the set off if I leave it on BET for more than a minute. CURSES!

Somewhere in the wrestling forum, there's an epic post on the horrors of a totalitarian society, TOTALLY blowing people's brains out of their skulls!

it is one of the many freedoms we enjoy, moving around without papers or permits.
-------
perhaps in some situations, yes. But the guy is driving a car, and i think that requires a license, and registration, and insurance. I don't see it as unreasonable for a person driving around to be able to show that he is indeed supposed to be driving the car. And yes, since people drive on suspended licenses or with stolen cars or with un-insured cars; proof, on demand, that you indeed are legally driving, meaning producing that proof, on demand, is not unreasonable.
Cops got a job to do; find the ID of the person in that vehicle. Feel free to say no, just be willing to accept the consequences of your actions. That doesnt excuse anyone else's actions; just be prepared, if you wish to act certian ways, to accept the repercussions of your actions.
Q: Does the Driver [any driver, any car] have a moral responsibility and duty to obey the laws of the license they agreed to obey when they got the license?

he wasn't driving around. that's the point. A driver's license is not and was never meant to be a mandatory ID to be produced on request. it gives the owner the privilege to operate a vehicle. if he's not operating one, and not even in one, he is not required to show it.
