I was just reading about Amelia Earhart's tragedy and it had reminded me of the documentary i saw of the failed attempt to reach the South pole in 1912 January, where Robert F. Scott and his crew all perished.
The question that always comes to my mind WHAT would be the specific reason these people would put themselves in 'harms way'.
If you are familiar with these events, what do you think was the main factor that drove these people?
Robert Scott

Th guys in the Scott expedition reached the South Pole only to find a flag there. A Norwegian Expedition made it there first. Now it was
800 miles of solid dragging--and goodbye to the daydreams
they had to walk 800 miles in -40 degree temperature to get back... They said due to the extreme temperature the ice had crystalized on the surface so dragging a sled over it was like dragging it through sand.
I would say that has to SUCK!
