Is there a utility in Windows (XP Professional) that I can use to set up reminders for myself that will pop-up and alert me to a specified event?

MS Outlook will do that for you with a meeting reminder...

I see this thing on Download.com called xReminder Pro (http://download.com.com/3000-2124-10128763.html?tag=lst-0-9) which sounds really good and I think it's along the lines of what you want.
Here (http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=Personal+Reminders&tg=dl-2001) are some other ones as well that you may want to check out.
MS Outlook is very good as well, though I think you need to have it running in order to give you the reminders. Most of the apps listed on Download.com seem to start with Windows and reside in the tray which may be more of what you're looking for.

'zackly. There's probably other freeware out there that will accomplish this for you if you don't have/want Outlook.
We use Outlook for personal scheduling, address book, and for a journal but not for mail. I have it set to launch at boot in XP. I don't use it for eml because I got tired of rebuilding my hard drive after getting boot-sector viruses from emails I deleted and never even opened. I can't afford an Exchange server admin...
