I'm going to Cancun next week. I know, obviously, not to bring even a manicure set in my carry on, but I was wondering whether or not I could pack a disposable razor in the suitcase I check in?

I'll probably just buy a pack at the resort instead of risking getting held up at the airport by a little pink razor, but it does make me wonder what the FAA's rule is about luggage that gets checked in.

Of course, pack a razor and whatever else you need in your checked-in bag. They just don't want you to take over the plane with a bic razor.

Pack anything questionable in the checked bag.

Enjoy your vacation!

Sure it's fine in your checked luggage. Shouldn't be in your carry on but with that said unless I'm going somewhere where I have to bring something like skiis or a snowboard or a violin or a lot of climbing gear I never check any luggage. I just went to Florida and had tweezers (small eyebrow), a razor (disposable) and an epipen (in its original box with doctors prescription, according to TSA rules this is ok as long as they see the prescription and that there is actually medicine with the syringe/needle) and they couldn't have cared less. I would have expected them to at least want to open my bag and look at the epipen.

Similarly if I'm flying somewhere with climbing gear I always put my rack (carabiners, cams, nuts, etc - basically a WHOLE HUGE BUNCH of metal) in my carryon because it's worth waaaaay too much money for me to risk checking it. I've never had anyone actually go through it - the most they ever do is say "You have a lot of metal in there, can I take a look?" and open up the top and just peek in. Who knows what I could have hidden in all that twisty metal? Scary stuff!!

right up my alley. I was a FAA special agent when there still was a faa security division. It's handled now by the TSA.

Razors are allowed in checked baggage because they're not accessable. Even guns are allowed in checked baggage, provided they're packed properly. manicure set are now allowable in carryon, provided the length of the nail file does not exceed 3 inches or is not pointed.
