View Full Version : BIG! ClearChannel Affiliates DROP Howard Stern!
ChickenHawk
02-25-2004, 04:10 PM
This from the Drudge Report:
The nation's top morning-drive radio jock will not air on his CLEAR CHANNEL-owned affiliates Thursday morning. INFINITY's Howard Stern Show has been found in violation of CC's new indecency standards. The action comes after CC executives reviewed comment made on Stern's Tuesday broadcast, including on on-air caller's comments: 'Ever bang a famous nigger chick? What do they smell like? Watermelons?'... Just as, CC's President/CEO John Hogan will appear as a witness at tomorrow morning's House Telecommunications Subcommittee hearing on the Broadcast Decency Enforcement Act of 2004...
The war has begun... And for the first time, I'm on Stern's side. FM Talkers unite. There's a common enemy now.

Satellite radio may have a future yet. If O&A and Stern go, along with all the others here and there (D&M, Ferrall, Bubba, Monsters, etc.), there's a large enough audience to bring it into the mainstream.

I'd be interested to know how many Clear Channel stations actually carry the show. That being said, this is very bad for us, i.e. fans of free speech. The thought police seem to be winning.
I'm backing Stern, even though I'm still pissed that he went on ad nauseum about how Opie and Anthony got what they deserved and that they crossed the line of acceptability. That's the very essence of hypocrisy.

Ya know, I DID like Bush, but he's gone completely nuts! First the Iraq fiasco, now the FCC and gay marriage insanity.
First of all, when (or if) are we gonna get that piece of shit Bin Laden?! Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we got Saddam, but Osama should have, and should still be priority one! All the intelligence that we supposedly have, and it took an Iraqi to tell us the hole Hussian was in! Meanwhile, we're still gettin' threats from Bin Laden's people. We're gonna get caught with our pants down yet again!
Now they're sayin' that Germany told the CIA about the 9-11 attacks, telling them that there was gonna be a hijacking! What a mess!
Second, there's this gay marriage stuff. Simply put... LEAVE PEOPLE ALONE! If gays and lesbians want to get married, so F'ING what! Are they hurting anybody? NO! President or not, W. CANNOT tell people who they can and can't marry! What is this, the 1950's?!
Speaking of the 1950's.... this censorship shit HAS GOT TO STOP! While I admit that if it's on free radio, it's hard to argue. Yeah, there's always the "turn it off" theory, but that only goes so far. But now they want to go after PAY services?! Hey jackasses, we're PAYING FOR IT!
Translation = some of us want the dirty stuff!
The argument is that many pay channels are in cable/sattellite packages. While that may be true, it is also true that to get ANY pay channel, you need a cable/dish box. And every single one of them (not to mention most TV's these days) have the feature to BLOCK the questionable material. Our digital cable boxes even have a feature where you can block programs based on their rating, so while one show on say Comedy Central may be rated TV-PG and viewable, the next, rated TV-14 would be blocked, and so on. If these holy rollers are so damn concerned with what their kids are watching, then
1. Learn how to use the equipment that you're paying good money for.
2. Be a good parent and stop letting the "boob tube" be the teacher!!
Howard, O&A, R&F, and the rest need to go to D.C. and DEFEND themselves! And if they did, I think alot of us would go to and defend our right to be entertained!
OK, I'm done. Sorry for the rant, but I needed to get that off my chest.

Good news is that he'll still be on in NY because K-Rock is an Infinity station - can't wait to hear his reaction to this. I'm quickly becoming sick of the new favorite phrase "common decency" - the protection-of-the-kids argument is simply an excuse for those that dislike Stern or O&A to sterilize what we take in. I suspect this Clear Channel brouhaha is little more than corporate gamesmanship at the highest level. Hogan knows that Stern is Infinity's milkiest cash cow so he gets to accomplish two things - take the (hypocritical) high ground right before going in front of the FCC (the easier to ask for favors later when no one is looking) and also spray a little of the fine shit mist on the competition's prize product, making it a little less valuable at the margin.
Of course it's no skin off my ass cuz I don't listen to Stern anyway.
On the whole censorship issue, we connoisseurs of "smut" had better start saving our quarters because all this stuff is headed off the "free" airwaves anyhooo. We better face up to the fact that the "Jesus-lovers" are not only better organized than we but they're also breeding faster so the politicos will always take their side over ours.

If Howard decides (i.e., is offered enough $$$) to go to satellite radio, I guess he won't be heading over to XM... it's owned by Clear Channel. I just hope Sirius can afford him. I also wonder if O&A end up at Sirius if Howard would have a problem sharing the spotlight. He may be forced to actually retire.

All you Stern haters are missing the point. If Stern is taken off the air, how long before D&M or R&F or whoever are taken off the air. Sooner or later the government will take something that you like and ban it.
Also, the government is thinking of going after cable and satellite radio and tv, since you have to buy the programming in packages.

It was interesting that Stern seemed empathetic towards the owner of CC, knowing he was reacting to the pressure of going in front of Congress today (guess Fez owes Ron a $1000!). However, there seems to be a lot more to this.
Although he'll be unlistenable tomorrow, much like he was today. I expect 5 hours of him bitching and moaning about the FCC and President Bush.
(((winning cowbell)))
I'm not a big fan of conspiracy theories, but it is interesting that this happened right as Howard turned on George Bush. Since 9/11 he has given the President a lot of support, but after the super bowl, with the additional heat put on broadcasters by the FCC, Bush being "deeply troubled" by gay marriage, and a clear sense that a Democrat can actually lead the country again, Howard and Robin (who are both very conservative at times) have come out strongly opposed to this administration.
(I find it funny the hypocrites that listen to any of these shows - Stern, D&M and R&F - until the hosts say something too close to home; I'm sure Republicans had no problem with Stern backing Arnold or Rudy, and were amused when Stern regularly lashed out against Mayor Dinkens, but once he turned that criticism against the sacred cow **George Bush ** then they are no longer amused - PAH! Typical of people who put their party before their country!)
So, Clear Channel, which has been very friendly with this administration, sends a signal on the eve they go in front of congress, taking Stern off the radio in two huge markets in what will more than likely be another battleground state this November.
What a bad week for Stuttering John to leave - his departure is now irrelevant.
Which brings me to O&A, which now have been effectively made obsolete, after the string of things; they actually got fired for a dumb stunt, not like "Bubba the Love Sponge" who was canned for cartoon characters having sex, or D&M being suspended for 2 weeks because the censor missed the word "bullshit," or Stern being dropped from 6 stations (for who knows how long - 2 days or forever?) because a caller said "nigger" on the air. In many ways, the Sex In The Church seems like more innocent times.
(Not that I think O&A should have been fired - they shouldn't have - but what they did actually has some meat to it, unlike the recent stuff).
And R&F did sort of set the record straight last night - that, while they know that radio people have predicted that all of these kind of shows will eventually wind up on Satelite Radio, he has no wish and no plans to do that with their show; he and Fez made a conscience effort years ago to do a funny show that avoided being of a "shock jock" nature, and they are flying so far under the radar, they are actually not at all concerned about their futures in regular broadcast radio.
He didn't seem to put the lid on it, conceding that anything is more than likely possible, but he did pretty much make it clear that he has no wish to jump ship to Siris or XM.

Be careful not to generalize all of us Republicans into one lump group - it only further erodes the already damaged myth that liberals are the open-minded ones in this country.
And personally, I've always thought Howard was a fucking hypocrite about politics (he pretty much only supports those politicians who would deign to give him the time of day, like Pataki or Rudy or Arnold during his campaign), so him bashing Bush isn't something I'm shocked or outraged about, just bored because he's been saying the same schtick for 20 years.
I know I should be supporting him because this is some great "war" against free speech (although I find it HIGHLY amusing that Stern laments his fallen ability to use the word "nigger" in ways that would make it seem as if the FCC ruling was something akin to Fahrenheit 451-style book burning), but I can't.
Because that asshole sat back and laughed when all of the so-called "Howard Stern clones", LIKE O&A, got burned; well, now he's the one about to be run off the air, and frankly I have no sympathy for him.

O&A got "burnt"? Really. I think everyone else at WNEW got burnt, not those that are being payed millions. Anyway, keep trying to attach Opie and Anthony to this.
it only further erodes the already damaged myth that liberals are the open-minded ones in this country.
I guess I should take it as a compliment that those that bow to the far right consider me a liberal, and those I know that blindly follow the far left consider me conservative.
Oh...Jesus was a liberal, but a conservative one.

I'm backing Stern, even though I'm still pissed that he went on ad nauseum about how Opie and Anthony got what they deserved and that they crossed the line of acceptability. That's the very essence of hypocrisy.
AMEN!
But I have to agree with the majority of everyone here. As much as I do not like Stren anymore things have gotten way out of control here. It seems like the Radical Right is taking over this country. (Gee only 20 years after 1984 too)
Between THIS and Bush saying that if you are gay and you want to get marriedm forget it...they are starting to bury themselves.
The letter that Anthony wrote (most of us have read it I am sure) is comming into play here. This is a culmination of people who would rather put the effort into changing the airwaves instead of just changing ths station.
And yes it seems that it would be MORe prudent right now to make an all talk channel (or two) on Satalite radio.
I know I would buy it and tune in.

Be careful not to generalize all of us Republicans into one lump group
I wasn't - I was talking about one person.
A LOT of plurals there. Forgive me if I thought you were talking about a group instead of one individual.
O&A got "burnt"? Really. I think everyone else at WNEW got burnt, not those that are being payed millions.
How so?
Since when were O&A responsible for the welfare of everyone else on the station? I don't see how it's their fault that they (and perhaps R&F) were the only show that pulled in decent ratings for that place.
But your missing my point - this isn't the first time radio "shock jocks" have been having problems with the FCC, it's been going on for years now, but only now is Stern really concerned because it effects him.
Anyway, keep trying to attach Opie and Anthony to this.
You don't think that they fit into this? It's not as if overnight all of this FCC nonsense just happened. It's been building up to this for the past few years.
I guess I should take it as a compliment that those that bow to the far right consider me a liberal, and those I know that blindly follow the far left consider me conservative.
Well then, let's meet in the middle - I won't call you a liberal, you don't portray me as Mr. Far Right, as others here do.
I honestly don't know you that well, so maybe I'm giving you a bad rap. And honestly, if you knew some of the shit I do in my spare time - for LIBERAL causes - you'd see that the "far right" label doesn't apply.
Oh...Jesus was a liberal, but a conservative one.
A Jesus / Joe Lieberman ticket would be something to behold.

It's like the folks at the time of McCarthy who turned in others to a: avoid punishment themselves or b: decide that everyone should share in their misery.
I agree with you, very idiotic of them. But then again, they haven't been smart (or consistent) about this whole mess from the beginning.
Don and Mike are such assholes. They are recommending their DC listeners turn in the DC101 DJ. (Elliott, who sucks ass, but people seem to like...) to the FCC.
I don't think they're assholes -- it's a matter of fairness. I've read numerous posts on DCRTV documenting things that have gone over the air on his show and there has been NO action taken against him. Why the double standard?
The danger here isn't so much losing shows like Stern, D&M and R&F. Rather, it's the possibility of the proliferation of more awful shows like Jack Diamond's and Rick Dees'.

But turning them in isn't the solution to all this. The solution is the government pushing parents to be parents.

A tale of wrong and Right
and freedom is the reason
You can't take it without a fight
So now I'm startin' up a posse
(Suck my dick, suck my dick)
To come and look for you
We're gonna put a stop
To what you want to do
You fucking whores (You fuckin' whores)
That's all you are
You say our records are offensive
(You're a douche, You're a douche)
Our messages ain't right
You say "We're gonna label records
So our kids can grow up right"
You fucking whores (Let them decide)
That's all you are
Shit, fuck, satan, death, sex drugs, rape
These seven words you're trying to take
Shit, fuck, satan, death, sex, drugs, rape
Right or wrong it's our choice to make
America the beautiful, Land of the free
Don't change the words to land of Hypocrisy
Now I'm startin' up a posse (Fascist scum, fascist scum)
And we'll damn sure make you see
Something that offends you
May not be offensive to me
You fucking whores (You fuckin' whores)
That's all you are
Now you might take offense
To a word like "fuck" or "shit" (Dick!)
But you fuckin' don't have the right (Cunt!)
To discriminate me for saying it!
You fuckin' whores (You fuckin' whores)
That's all you are
So now I'm startin' up a posse (Motherfucker, motherfuck)
To fight for freedom of choice
To fight for freedom of speech
We're gonna make you hear our voice
And now I don't do this to shock you
(That's the end, that's the end)
I don't do this for spite
You've got the choice, don't buy it, don't read it,
And don't say your opinion's right
You fucking whores (You fuckin' whores)
That's all you are (Cunty, cunty, cunty, cunt)
You know you can't censor my feelings
You can't censor my thoughts

I am so sick of the minority being able to judge what is necessary and right for the majority in this country. It absolutely disgusts me because I see these parents every fucking day. These are the same people you see who allow their children to run wild and create total havoc then smile their big toothy fucking grin and say something along the lines of "AH kids do the darnest things, Lemme tell ya" It literally enrages me. These are the same children who steadily escalate into other worse behavior, then when the parents are confronted it's always the same god damn reaction" Well I know that I am a good morally upstanding virtuous person so it can not possibly be my fault. I know! It's the rest of society that ruined my Johnny". Yes I know children will be children, but without some sort of teaching in their lives they will NEVER learn right from wrong even if you try to exclude what you percieve to be wrong.
And it won't end here. Because once these problems continue then the same parents will look around and say "Nothing has changed, we have not gone far enough." Until finally we are ALL relegated to being controlled by a minority of people who have no responsability for themselves.
All I can say is continue to burst into hysterical fits when your children see a breast, or blood, or a foul word. These innocent and pure children are the same that grow up into sexually deprived predators. Or even worse just like their parents.

FM Talkers unite. There's a common enemy now
Could it already be happening? Opie's Words:
"I feel sorry for the guys who don't have the talent to get beyond the shocking stuff," Hughes told The Post - echoing a widespread view in the radio business that Stern doesn't need to shock to entertain.
"Even though it's no secret that we've never gotten along with Howard, I believe it's an outrage what's going on with him and I fully support him," Hughes said.

A LOT of plurals there. Forgive me if I thought you were talking about a group instead of one individual.
Yeah, I was being a little coy, but never did I say, as you assumed, that all Republicans put their party before their country, but I said that it was the "hypocrites" (the very first point in that quote) who did so.
I can't help it if when someone yells out the word "Republican Hypocite" you turn around and assume they are talking about you and everyone - I don't turn my head when someone says "Democrat" or "Asshole."
But your missing my point - this isn't the first time radio "shock jocks" have been having problems with the FCC, it's been going on for years now, but only now is Stern really concerned because it effects him.
Ummmmmmmmm...where have you been the last 15 years??? Stern has been fined for over one million dollars. He was concerned about this almost 10 years before the revolutionary talents, O&A, evn got near a microphone.
It's unfair that DC101 isn't mentioned, sure.
But turning them in isn't the solution to all this. The solution is the government pushing parents to be parents.
How is that really any different than 10 years ago when Stern urged his listeners to take notes and report the daytime talk shows that said and did things that he couldn't get away with?
I agree that now is not shouldn't be the time for them to be eating their own (I thought it was interesting Rush Limbaugh's support of Stern yesterday, where he said that they needed to support Stern, because what happens when the balance of power shifts again, and they decide that right wing radio speach is now hate speach), however there has to be a time to hold hypocracy up and force the issue.
Clear Channel pulled Stern for no reason except to make a point to congress that they were responsible, meanwhile Elliot continues to go by undiscipled for saying much much worse.
It's a very muddied situation.

"I'm doing this for the children" has been trotted out everytime a moral conservative has an issue with something offensive. I don't understand why they think that is a viable excuse for censorship. Do children under the age of 13 really listen to the Howard Stern Show? Besides the fact that most of them are in school, do they really understand what he's saying? I started listening to Stern in my late teens and I remember being unable to understand a lot of the jokes being passed around, only because the themese were so mature that they were beyond my scope of experience to understand.
Leave the guy alone. He's been around for over two decades already. Just let him finish his run. Then there won't be anymore Howard Stern. That's the best way you can get him off the air. The more you piss him off, the longer he's going to be on the air to defend himself.

Stern talking about sex isn't.
How is that really any different than 10 years ago when Stern urged his listeners to take notes and report the daytime talk shows that said and did things that he couldn't get away with?
I never said it was different. And I'll call Stern an asshole for doing that, but I wasn't posting this from a time machine, I posted that a little while after I heard D&M ask people to turn Ellott in. I hope this law suit gets him fired, that is a scummy thing to do. Don't DJ's usually check with the people they work with that aren't on the air before involving them in the show? I'm sure R&F do that.

Stern made an interesting point this morning. In the morning, kids are over-supervised as their parents rush around and get them out on the bus, so they don't really get to listen to Stern. In the evenings, there are the sex/relationship advice shows that get fairly graphic. People don't monitor their children as much in the evenings, when kids go to their rooms and listen to the radio. So why not take a look at those shows instead/too?

DC-101's 'Elliot' Sued by Co-Worker Over On-Air Comments
Friday, February 27, 2004; Page C07
The shock jock at a local Clear Channel station is being sued by a co-worker for comments he made about her on the air.
Montgomery County resident Jamie Doody has filed a $3.25 million lawsuit against WWDC-FM (DC-101) radio personality Elliot Segal, aka "Elliot in the Morning," for "defamation, injurious falsehood, and undue invasion of privacy."
The lawsuit claims that, last summer, Segal broadcast "false and defamatory statements" about Doody, an office manager at WWDC, that exposed her to "public scorn, contempt, ridicule," causing her "professional damage and severe emotional distress."
According to the lawsuit, Segal claimed on the air that Doody was having sex with a fellow employee and that her job at the station "means nothing." He also gave listeners her office phone number and encouraged listeners to harass her, the suit says. One caller told Segal that she was a "whore" who had an abortion, the lawsuit contends.
Clear Channel Regional Vice President Bennett Zier, who oversees the company's eight local stations, declined to comment on the lawsuit, saying, "I don't have all the facts."
Doody's lawyer Tim Junkin said his client filed the lawsuit because "she wants people to know that these were false statements. They were made in such a way to suggest they were true."

Yeah, Opie and I saw this one coming quite a ways back. When other jocks would bad mouth us months after we were pulled off the air we'd sit back and say "Ok, keep talking. You think they're stopping at us? Your turn in the barrel is right around the corner."
And this is exactly what I meant when I mentioned that Stern was aware this sort of thing was happening - that this sort of thing was building - and he didn't do anything about it because it was only affecting those he considered his "clones" and not him.
But the gun's pointed at him, now, and it couldn't happen to more deserving asshole.
