View Full Version : Stolen Blank Passports = terrorist's dream

Unbelievable! (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=535&ncid=535&e=18&u=/ap/20040228/ap_on_re_eu/interpol_passports_galore)
Ronald Noble, Interpol's first American secretary general, told The Associated Press that only 34 countries of 181 members have agreed to share their data. But, together, they report 80,000 missing passports.
"This is only what's on file," Noble said. "You can imagine the rest. If we don't have a global database with everyone contributing, think of all the terrorists and criminals trading in documents."
By multiplying the 34 members' lists of stolen blank passports by a factor of five, Noble said, the number reaches 400,000.
How in the world will we ever be able to identify anyone traveling who might be "on a list" if they are traveling under a false identity with legitimate documentation?

This isn't anything new. blanks are stolen all the time.
even though they're blank, the forger usually doesn't have the skill or equipment to complete the bio page to standard. it comes down to the CBP inspectors skill and experience. Usually the blanks aren't completed, because the alien's just using it to board the plane. once here they claim asylum, so i doesn't need to be in decent condition, just enough to convince a stewardess. Many are caught with very nicely completed bio pages, but the idiots don't think to change the passports number, which is of-course on the list.
don't get me wrong, a stolen blank is the hardest thing to catch.

Assassins do it from behind.
If I get what Furie is saying, it's practically impossible to get by with one of them blank passports and they're worthless.

Fake IDs and forged valid passports are two completely
different things. Passports can't just be run off on a laser
printer or forged by hand*. there are only a few dozen
machines in the world capable of printing a passport
properly, and they exist in some embassies, the State
Dept. building in NY, New Orleans, and DC.
If someone tries to alter the old information printed on the
blank, it usually comes out cartoonish, so they don't try.
they just put their bio information.
*there are in fact a few guys who can forge blank US
passports by hand with near perfect precision. Brilliant
artists. it's a shame.

Yes, I got what you were saying... hence the joke, albeit a bad one.
