I got laid off on Wednesday.
I had been with that company for almost 6 years, which is a big deal nowadays. The company had about 70 employees when I started and now has about 600. I had grown professionally with the company and had a considerable amout of loyalty because of the opportunities they've given me and just my own hound-dog loyal nature.
Now they can go fuck themselves.
I need a hug.

damn that sucks, sorry.
I have a job for you though, find me an apartment. The pay sucks ($0) but I'm sure because of your personality it's the satifaction of a job well done that is most important.
If you do anything with AutoCAD let me know because I might be leaving my job soon and I could put a word in for you. oh wait, you live in the Bronx.

Maybe it happened for a reason and you're gonna get a better job than the one you had! I was fired once from my job for what the boss called "chronic lateness and inappropriate behavior" and was really bummed but that allowed me to then take communications classes and lo and behold- I got a job in the field I had really wanted! Though I also have to work another job that sucks to make money I still am happy as tits on a bull, if that's the right expression! Good luck and stay away from hookers!

Best-case scenario: The guy that fires you gets his ass stuck in a company toilet and has it stuck in there until some other pithetic emplyee comes along to help him.
Anyway, good luck on finding a new job!

You guys are the best. I appreciate all the love I'm getting from you.
People had been encouraging me to leave there since there had been so much change lately (we recently opened a division offshore and many jobs we had in the US have gone away), but I was naive and stuck it out. Oh well. Live and learn.
I guess the lesson here is don't trust your company to be loyal to you, even if you helped build the business to what it is today.

i learned that as a few of you guy might remember i waqs bitching about my boss who was giving me a hard time for leaving for a job with better pay and bennifits. i start taht job on monday. But after all that bitching and moaning that my boss did and is still doing i find out that 2 out of his 3 shops are sold and that includes the one that i work at . So my advice to everyione is fuck everybody else and look after yourself and drink at work like i am doing right now ( whatsw the worst that can happen i get fired) Best of luck to you Matty

at my last job, the overnight dispatcher used to drink all night, vodka and cranbury juice. we used to just make fun since it was the over night, till he rolled his truck 13 times on the way home once cause he was loaded. and he didnt have a scratched.
after that they fired him and made twice as much fun, and i kinda felt bad that they fired him for doin somhting they knew he did and didnt care just cause something that happened away from work.
same job that knew and didnt care i smoked weed at work basically everyday

That is one thing I'll miss about this job. Towards the end there I was working noon-8PM on Fridays. Many of my friends got off at 4PM and would head down for happy hour. I would usually join them for a two-hour liquid lunch from 4:30-6:30 then come back & finish up my shift half drunk since anyone of any importance was around. Yeah, that was a good benefit.

I was applying for like 5 jobs a night!
At the height of my unemployment I was applying to at least 25 a night.
The market is still bad, I suggest also FAXING resumes to ads in the paper. I've had the best results doing that. There's more of a chance someone will actually read your resume instead of just hitting "delete" because your email was #243 and they just don't have time to review every single one. HR people are getting swamped with resumes because its so easy to just email now, that faxing your resume, IMO, makes your chances better.
Good luck. unemployment only pays you $400/week TOPS and runs out eventually. It's fun for a few weeks and then it becomes incredibly demoralizing. I finally found a job at my old pay rate but it's a never-ending temp job with no benefits. I'm still looking for a permanent position.
Newyork.Craigslist.org is also a good place to look for jobs, and they have a job realated message board on there that's good for bitching, and sometimes can give you some good tips on the job search.

Unemployment is good for 6 months, with a possible 3 month extension due to the current economy.

That $400/week is crap. My sister's just ran out and there's no extension yet, something happened like the house approved it and now the senate is waiting on it, and it might not get approved... its total BS

I was unemployed from 1/31/03 to 9/29/03. At the end of July, I called the unemployment office for information about getting the extention and was told to just file normally and they would automagically start the extention. I collected the entire 8 months I looked for a job.

yeah you made it just in time... if your benefits ran out after Dec. 24, 2003, you weren't eligible for the extension. My sister just missed the cutoff date by 4 or 5 days.. they're pushing for another extension right now in congress.
