View Full Version : Legalize marijuana?

keithy_19

I've been reading the new Montel Williams book, 'Climbing Higher,' and as you may know he uses cannabis to relieve pain. After reading the chapter on his use of the drug, it seems pretty clear to me, that this country should legalize the use of marijuana for medical uses only. There are lots of people out there her are suffering because of illness and if ingesting this drug makes them more comfortable, then why not?

Discuss.

I don't smoke it, and I am for legalizing it, for any purpose.

It's not a gateway drug. It is no worse than drinking alcohol. Get the fuck over it.

Legalize it already! Why is this still such a major cause for panic in this country? I don't even smoke anymore and think it 's fine

TheMojoPin

I don't smoke it anymore, but I say go for it.

I don't think there should be out and out legalization, but if someone wants to smoke it at home or at an Amsterdam-style "hash bar," go right ahead.

And I don't think everyone should be able to "smoke 'n' drive." There's plenty of people who can, and just as many, if not more, who can't...just like alcohol. That's the biggest sticking point for me.

while you're right that legalizing marajuana would eliminate a lot of the drug related violence, marajuana use is a victimless crime. the rest of it is the byproduct of having a regime that prohibits use. they're not the same things.

here is where you come off naive. first off, weed is nothing like the majority of the drugs that get abused.
#2, by legalizing for all use, the government controls and obviously, taxes it, making it more watchable, safer, regulatable, and would stand to make the country a whole hell of alotta money

Gotcha; I believe the correct term here would be de-criminalization, not legalization.

States have tried; but as of today in the year 2004, it is, at the federal level; illegal to possess any quantity of pot, anywhere.

Q: Would it surprise any if they knew there are people now, as we speak, serving Life without the Possibility for Parole, for selling pot?

there are numerous threads about this topic i know i started one when i first joined thsi board and i know its been in the political forum at least twice.

anyway, it should be legalized. heres some facts for you:

the percentage of adolescents who have tried marijuana in amsterdam is far lower than the percentage of adolescents who have tried marijuana in this country. so just because its legal doesnt mean that kids will begin smoking chronic all of a sudden.

marijuana is a far less addictive substance than tobacco and alcohol. last time i checked, less than 2% of marijuana users were addicted. at least 5% were alcohol users were addicted to alcohol, and over 20% of tobacco users were addicted to stoges.

there is no significant proof that weed is a gateway drug. that has more to do with the individual than the drug.

and decriminalization saves NY city millions of dollars a year. and actually creates revenue since possession warrants a summons and a fine, not jail time.

want more reasons?

heres my favorite: there is no reason someone selling weed needs to be put in the same prison as rapists and murderers.

and another question, what or who decides what pain is? i go through shit, that hurts every day of my life but its the emotional pain of having family leave my life. its not physical, but trust me its pain. i didnt become a full fledged pothead until i lost those people. does that qalify me as to smoke?

Seems to me there are much more effective, and legal, ways to deal with pain than pot. Given that, I think touting "medicinal only" marijuana is a little silly and a cop-out.
If you're going to back it, back it all the way- don't be half-assed about it. Marijuana should be legalized, regulated, and most importantly, taxed.

And I don't even smoke it.

When I hurt my back, the doctor gave me Oxycontin, Perciset, and Steroids for my pain. When my IDRC class started piss testing me I told them I would rather smoke marijuana for my back pain. They told my I couldn't and I would fail the class if I did. They would rather have me doing the deadly synthetic heroin pills. Go figure!

When I went out to California to film the Cannibis Clubs, I saw many sick people with cancer and AIDS who really needed their marijuana medicine. Some of these people were vomiting all the time and the "stupid" doctors would give them a pill to take for nausea. IF YOU'RE THROWING UP ALL THE TIME, HOW ARE YOU GONNA KEEP DOWN A PILL!!! So they got "smart" doctors to perscibe or "recommend" pot so they could join these clubs. They used marijuana in smokable form to give them an appetite. I'm all for medical marijuana because I would be able to get a script. So can you if you have headaches, back pain, PMS, nausea, ect... ;)

Montel Williams has M.S., lives in NJ and is helping to get a medical marijuana law passed in NJ. There is a bill in legislature now.

I love those anti-pot ads, that smoking pot will cause you to run over children or let them run around next to the swimming pool or just plain leave them home alone. It's soooo fucking stupid.

First off, thanks for donating money. As a MS patient, who was in severe pain, which thank God I'm not in right now, yes. I would smoke it. And if they took out the stuff that gets you high, would it still releive pain?

The reason I don't smoke weed or drink, is because it is harmful to your body. When you take a hit, you DO kill brain cells. When you drink alcohol and get drunk like kids due in highschool, you lose brain cells. The way I figure it is I don't want to mess up my body anymore then it already is. Even if it's only a tiny little bit harmful. If I was in such severe pain that I could think straight, then I would smoke it.

yet, cigarettes are highly regulated, but legal.

Legal, yet utterly un-regulated by the FDA. The Nicotine, certainly.

Kessler tried, believe me. It was simple enough; The FDA classifies a drug, loosely, as something you ingest that is not necesary for life, as opposed to food. If Nicotine classified as a drug, as Kessler argued, it would fall under the umbrella of jurisdiction of FDA regulation, and it would not only be the FDA's resposibility, but Duty, to step in and regulate.

From an article in Reason [great Magazine]

Recognizing that Congress could not have intended the law to sweep so broadly, the pre-Kessler FDA had always taken the position that it would not regulate cigarettes as drugs unless a manufacturer made explicit health claims. If cigarettes were drugs within the meaning of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the FDA would have to certify them as safe and effective--something it obviously could not do. It thus would seem to have little alternative but to ban them.

After Kessler said the FDA might regulate tobacco products, Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), then chairman of the House Subcommittee on Health and the Environment, told the Los Angeles Times that, without congressional action, "the FDA is going to have only one option: ban cigarettes." Kessler seemed to agree, saying Congress had to "provide clear direction to the agency."

May the Feds Regulate Cigarettes? (http://reason.com/opeds/jacob0723.shtml)

Legal, yet utterly un-regulated by the FDA. sorry, what i meant to say was that the sale of cigarettes is regulated. and, in recent years, they have gotten much more strict about enforcing the age minimums. same goes for alcohol.

i say that we should probably lagalize marijuana and regulate it like we do cigarettes. I personally hate the smell of pot smoke, so i don't want it near me. So maybe you should only be able to smoke pot at home or in pot dens like someone mentioned before.

and we should probably lay off of Keith until he says something stupid. He never even outwardly insulted pot smokers in this thread as far as i saw.

and ESD is king of all men. Period
