I started massage school 2 weeks ago. I love it except for my instructor. She SUCKS. It's my luck that this is the 1st class she's ever taught and it shows. Yeah she knows her stuff but she doesn't know how to teach it. She's runs through everything very quickly, she's very soft-spoken and doesn't explain what she's talking about. And this isn't easy stuff. We're learning Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology..which I know nothing about. I told her the other day I didn't understand something and she says, "Oh don't worry you'll get it". Ummm how about explaining it to me bitch.
So what do I do? I don't feel like I'm getting the education I paid for. Do I say something to someone? And if so, who? Or do I just hope she gets better with time? HELP!

I don't feel like I'm getting the education I paid for.i think you've answered your own question. you're spending your money to learn a skill, and you don't feel like you're learning it. you have to go talk to someone. maybe the teacher will get better with time, but it's not your responsibility to be her guinea pig. let her practice her teaching on someone else.

There must be some type of administration you can ask, right? Either that or you'll have to learn it on your own. Maybe there was a pre class course on anatomy that you could have taken but that they assumed you took that somehow got overlooked?

Thanks Ari. Now I feel like shit. Mizzle doesn't fall into this category because he has proven on many an occasion that he knows his shit.
But Mike, sorry if I offended ya.

Would this be a bad time to offer myself as a homework subject? A classwork assignment?
You are supposed to get lots of practice to become proficient. :)

Umm, actually I agree with Arienette and you. Not about me knowing my shit either.
I was pretty good as a full-time all 30 plus me for 7 years teacher, I think. If they walked away with some interest in learning ingeneral and science in particular; I can sleep at night.
Sadly, that's not enough. The current status of our nations educational system is horrific. No sane person would have envisaged the current system.
-The tenure system is a joke. Imagine being an air-traffic controller, and after 3 years and 1 day; you get tenure. So you begin to suck, but unless they can nail you for something, or really work it, you've got a job. I was offered tenure, got it, and left the job for a better one about 2 months later. There are teachers and administartion still talking about it. You don't leave right after you get Tenure!! Bullshit. Get rid of it.
-Let people decide where their tax money goes for school. Does this mean vouchers? Irrelevant. I also taught at a school that seemed private, but the sending district paid. There was a preliminary test to get into this school. Mr. Shy [Me] always volunteered to talk give the test [Please Read the Directions silently as I read them aloud...] to 100 kids with 200 parents who have brought them here in the hopes of escaping, yes Escaping, the School of their hometown. I have seen students meltdown during this test because of the pressure put on by the parents.
-Fuck the NEA. They started nobily like all unions, and got teachers some good pay and some benefits. But the political power they yielded with MY Money [even if you refuse to joing the NEA as a teacher, you have to pay 85% of the dues.] made me ask, why are they giving money away to candidates and people I might not agree with, while I spend hundreds a year out of pocket for experiments. By the way the experiments, aren't required by the school.
They are fucking-A well told, required by ME. I get a kid in 9th grade who hasnt yet: Seen sodium explode in water, show how a pound of water can defy gravity by being held upside down in a glass with a playing card, seen the moon with their own eyes through a telescope, seen the things that a science curriculum would show a student.
There are some awesome, world-altering teachers out there. Their are also a lot of shitty teachers. I have no easy solution.
PS: Massage school? A Question: Is this what brings purpose and meaning to your life? If the answer is not an immediate Yes, I beg, drop out today.

I'll say it.
So when do they teach you about the happy ending?

Is this what brings purpose and meaning to your life? Yes. Without a doubt.
So when do they teach you about the happy ending? Right around the time when they teach us how to speak Japanese.

And watch for those Oral Quizzes.

Usually first year teachers are closely watched, but maybe not for a class like this. I would first approach the teacher with your concerns, and if she still is unresponsive, complain to a higher up. Write down the parts that you do not understand on a piece of paper, and ask if you can schedule a meeting with her.

Usually first year teachers are closely watched We do have an assistant instructor who when he speaks is a hell of alot better than her. I would much rather him teach us than her. Maybe I can talk to him about it. I just have a feeling the answer I will get is..."Just give her more time, she just started". F that. I just gave you 7 grand. I shouldn't have to wait for shit.
A tutor is $35 an hour which is insane but whatever. I will ask my classmates before I pay for extra help. And approaching her with my concerns isn't really an option cause I'm a pussy with social anxiety.

Because this is a "trade school" rather than a "educational institution", there are no restrictions on the school and they can do whatever the fuck they want without worrying about accreditations and shit like that. Being a massage school, I do know they have to register with whatever governing body to give you legal license to practice in your state upon completion.
Your options come down to complaining to the administration, talking to the teacher or talking to the teaching assistant. You paid $7 grand, you damn well better get your money's worth.
As an aside, at my last job, I was the high ranking IT person, so I got to run the interviews for new IT hires. Quite a few Chubb students (computer technical school) applied. I would invite them in for interviews and realize that they really had no understanding nor foundation to program computers in a productive way. Eventually, I stopped inviting them in for interviews because I knew I'd just be wasting my time.

BJ, I'd love to hear what the argument was.
One of our graphic design interns at that company was a Chubb graduate. She and her entire graduating class were in the process of suing Chubb because they were all promised job placement upon graduation, but all they got were sub-standard educations and empty promises.

My school is one of the most credentialed schools in the country. They are accreddited by the NJ Dep of Ed, COMTA (Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation), NCBTMB(National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork),ACCET (Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training), and the ACE (American Council on Education). I know it's just massage school but hey, I'm no Chubb student...not that there's anything wrong with that.

Simple really, trade school vs. college, particularly in the computing trades.

If they so accredited, then they should be good. I would to an administrator and make sure you're getting your money's worth, then.
So are you saying because I am going to a trade school, I won't be any good?
Nope, not saying that. If you were going to Chubb for an IT degree, then I'd be saying it.
Simple really, trade school vs. college, particularly in the computing trades.
I can't speak for all trade schools or for all fields, but the problem is that Chubb is a crash course. They teach you the language without teaching you the fundamentals and without teaching the underlying thought processes.
I always end my interview with a logic/programming problem to get a feel for the ability of the person I'm interviewing. I can get a real feel for their knowledge through this, and universally, no Chubb student could ever work it out.

If it's a for-profit school, you need to complain, complain, complain. These places depend on former students recommending it to new students, so they care about whether or not students enjoy class. That being said, they probably won't pull the teacher simply because they probably don't have anyone else to teach the class.
Another option is to give the teacher written feedback (of a constructive nature). My sense is that the teacher doesn't WANT to suck...she just doesn't know any better. If she's truly dedicated to teaching, she'll take feedback seriously. If you write up a detailed list of the the things you don't like about her teaching and include ways that she can improve (and do it all in a very positive way) you'll hopefully see some results. If she's soft spoken as you say, she's probably terribly worried about what people think about her, and will try to fix anything you identify. If you're worried about retribution, type it up anonymously and drop it in her mailbox or something.
The other upside to that tact is that if she doesn't improve at all, you can show the letter to school administrators later on and say: "Hey, I gave her this feedback and she did nothing!"
