I was thinking about this last night.....

I never understood how someone could commit suicide by drowning themselves. If youre underwater and cut oxygen off wouldn't your body automatically have the reflex to jerk up or something, i mean it's not foolproof(or at least doesn't seem to be).

I can understand falling into the water, because there are side effects from that.(i.e. breaking your neck or back depending on the height which you're falling, or getting knocked out before/while hitting the water)

Purposely drowning yourself though?....it just doesn't make sense to me how that would work.

In the book The Perfect Storm, the author talks about the mechanism and the bodys reaction to drowning. Sailors trapped in a sinking ship, with no means of escape, will naturally hold their breath as long as possible, but sooner or later, youll need to exhale and then inhale. He describes it as the water going in as if you were inhaling and exhaling and youll "breathe" water for a while until your body passes out from your inability to absorb oxygen. You fill up with water and sink down because you lose boyancy. There was a researcher who devised a tank with oxygenated water and had people submerge in it and actually breathe water and they didnt drown, but they suffered from the stress of the fluids mass on their internal tissue. I remember this news story a few years back about this boy that fell under the ice and he drowned and under water for over an hour, and they pulled him out and revived him. I think the young can handle it more so than adults. If that guy Spalding Gray jumped of that ferry and drowned himself, the water was very cold and he would have succomed from hypothermia before he drowned.

ody

Not quite the same thing. The kids heart, lungs and brain were placed in a sort of suspended animation because of hypothermia. The water was so cold he never reached the point where he "inhaled" water

if your in a pool, you float when you have a breath, and if you blow out all your air, you'll sink. so if you pass out from lack of oxygen, you dont have any air to float you up so you sink to the bottom and die

Technically, it's not drowning if you survive. You had what we call a "Submersion" Incident.

I almost drowned once in a lake up in Canada. I tried swimming to a little island and just when I was no more that 10 feet from the shoreline my body just gave out and I could not move my arms anymore. The water level was just above my head but I sank to the bottom.

What I remember was a rushing sound going through my head and I was very light headed. It was a peaceful feeling.

But somehow I managed to push forward on my legs and I pulled myself along some rocks and roots and crawed ashore. I threw up water and proabably layed there for an hour before I flagged a passing motorboat to give me a ride back.

Never swim alone.

One time at my friend's house we were hanging out at the pool. One of my friends (who couldn't swim) jumped into the deep part of the pool with a lifesaver and slipped through it leaving the lifesaver on top of the water. It was some funny shit that we all started laughing. Until we remembered he couldn't swim, so we jumped in to get him. He was coughing out water and didn't go back into the pool afterwards. But it was still funny.

They didn't make fun of them directly?.....So what, directly or not they're still making fun of the mentally challenged.

Just like if you'd refer to a Hindu as a "dot head", you're not making fun of just that particular person. You're lumping a whole race of people together and using those words as a racial barrier.

You telling me to slash my wrists was not humorous, you pretty much told me to kill myself, and repeatedly at that.

I asked if that kid was one of your students, which is more recognizable as a joke to someone reading this thread.

Also, there was no need to post a picture implying that i'm a bitch, it's just in bad taste and makes it look like you can't take the jokes im handing out. Besides the fact that half the readers on this board already realize i'm a bitch, no use in pointing out the obvious.

Regardless we both took the joke(s) out of context and too far, so whatever.
