ok, so the fact that potatoes are a living organism when you pick them makes them meat?

This is something that springs up often in classes in the past, and in my own little world. My arguement went something like this. And in my class, totally disagreeing with the teacher was not only encouraged, there's an exercise I used where it is Required. But that's another post....
-Nature is wonderful and beautiful and fills the earth with life, and beauty. I even believe this beauty exists independent of us.
-Nature is a killing machine. It runs, literally, on Death. Everytime something eats; something dies. I understand of cheez-wiz and foods like that. I'm talking Nature, for sake of arguement, independent of the Huge changes humans have made on parts of nature.
-Some would argue a difference in degree; between killing and eating a person, and a petunia. Nature sees no such difference. The Lion has no animus towards you; he just wants to eat you. Ditto with the Bovine grazes the grass. To Nature; there is Exactly as much 'violence' in both acts. The Shark just thinks you were an exciting meal that fought a bit, that's all. Gulp.
-This sounds brutal, cruel and cold. That is because nature is brutal, cruel and cold.
-While Nature is indeed cruel, it is fair.

Well; that's a debate topic, pretty much as I intro-ed it in classes ranging from Sayreville High School to Monmouth University. Feel free to rip it to shreads. I'd ask for a debate forum, but I'm not THAT crazy...
