Even though I dislike how much money it takes to keep criminals alive who have been sentenced to death, I disagree in this case. I think the son-of-a-bitch should be scheduled to be put to death almost immediately, then rescheduled for every other week or so. Let the fucker make peace with his sentence & prepare for death over & over & over gain and live with the anxiety of knowing he's going to die, only to have it put off for just a little while longer. Then, after the 6th or 7th time they strap him in & swab his arm with alcohol in preparation for the injection, right about the time he's thinking, "here we go again, que the phone call from the governor, and..."...BZZZZZZZ...run a leathal bolt through one of the EKG lead attached to his chest & stand back & watch the fireworks.

But that's just me.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Teenage sniper Lee Boyd Malvo was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday for an October 2002 killing spree in the Washington, D.C., area that left 10 people dead.

Glad this is behind us. I guess the next time any of us will have to think about this is when John Allen Muhammad is actually put to death when his appeals run out.

I've been a supporter of Capital Punishment for most of my life, however, in the last 5-10 years I've really begun to shift my opinions. There are too many elements to it that make me nervous; from race, to economic issues, to questions that always come up about whether or not innocent people were killed, to just the idea of state murder - on the death certificate for people who are executed, the cause of death is filled out as "murdered," which is a little unsettling, when you stop to try any think about all that really means; every time someone is put to death, they are murdered by the state and every person it represents. This is not something we should be allowed to safely dismiss as not effecting us in or day to day lives because we aren't the ones who actually stuck the needles in, or we're not the ones who watched it happen, or could have stopped it, or were affected by it because a loved one was killed.

I wonder how many people would change their opinions on the death penalty if they were allowed/forced to watch it - and I don't mean on television, because we are still safely at home disconnected from it - but to actually be there and see a man alive one moment, and then dead a little while later. It's got to be profoundly haunting and humbling, to anyone with a soul, regardless of the person being put to death and what they did to bring this on themselves.

Nevertheless, if we are a society that has this on the books, there is no one more deserving of it than John Muhammad (yet another Gulf War veteran that came home and went nuts; what the hell did they do to these guys over there???). He should not be mourned, and when I hear when it happens I will more than likely say, "Good riddance." At the same time, I won't feel like celebrating, because that won't bring this region's peace of mind that we lost during that horrible month, not will it bring back those 10 people back, even though it might hopefully bring closure to their families, and the victims that weren't killed.

I'm like left on everything but capital punishment. I believe in it, and that it should be pretty bad. I guess it's really Hobbesian, but i like the fact that he was captured after killing a bunch of people, so now we get to kill him. What's the death penalty in Virginia? Too bad its not Washington or Idaho which i think are the only ones left that have firing squad and hanging, respectively.

What do you all think about the older DC sniper John Allen Muhammad being executed early next month? It doesn't look like he is going to get clemency from the Virginia governor. I know some of you lived in the DC area back in October 2002. I lived there in 2002, near seven corners.
A few years ago, when he got the death penalty I thought "Good", For some strange reason I am feeling sorry for this man as his execution comes closer. I've read all the books about the case that have been published, and it's clear this man is mentally ill. On the other hand, I feel so sad for the families of the victims, and I bet they want this man executed. He is garbage, he was an abusive husband, he killed people, he trained a teenage boy to be killer, he terrorized people in Virginia and Maryland for a month. I don't know how to feel about his execution.

It doesn't take that long. At least not here in Virginia (where this guy is). The most recent execution in VA was in February of this year for a murder that occurred in October of of 1999. And that guy had WAY more appeals than Muhammad got. Even though our Governor is personally opposed to the death penalty, he promised to uphold the law when he ran for office. Since then, nine people have been executed in Virginia.
