Study: We're Eating Ourselves to Death

By LINDSEY TANNER
AP Medical Writer

March 9, 2004, 2:44 PM EST

CHICAGO -- Inactive Americans are eating themselves to death at an alarming rate, their unhealthy habits fast approaching tobacco as the top underlying preventable cause of death, a government study found.

In 2000, poor diet including obesity and physical inactivity caused 400,000 U.S. deaths -- more than 16 percent of all deaths and the No. 2 killer. That compares with 435,000 for tobacco, or 18 percent, as the top underlying killer.

The researchers analyzed data from 2000 for the leading causes of death and for those preventable factors known to contribute to them. Like tobacco, obesity and inactivity increase the risks for the top three killers: heart disease, cancer and cerebrovascular ailments including strokes. Obesity and inactivity also strongly increase the risk of diabetes, the sixth leading cause of death.

The results appear in Wednesday's Journal of the American Medical Association.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services officials discussed the findings Tuesday at a Washington news briefing where they announced a public service ad campaign using humor to get Americans to pay attention to the dangers of inactivity and obesity.

In order, the leading causes of death in 2000 were: Heart disease, cancer, strokes and other cerebrovascular disease, chronic lower respiratory disease, unintentional injuries, diabetes, influenza and pneumonia, Alzheimer's disease, kidney disease, and septicemia.

The underlying preventable causes of death were, in order: tobacco, poor diet and physical inactivity, alcohol, microbial agents, toxic agents, motor vehicles, firearms, sexual behavior and illegal drug use. Together, these accounted for about half of all 2.4 million U.S. deaths in 2000.

And, the Good news...

http://members.aol.com/miketeachr/twoyears2

I was saving this for the 20th, which marks the completion of a two-year diet.

Diet =

1. Zero Booze
2. Eat ANYthing you want; just a lot less then before. McDonalds was eaten. Often.
3. Fire Lawn Service; cut lawn obsessively.

This Diet, unlike the others, admits: You will Be hungry a Lot.

Left = 360 lbs. Pills for Depression, pills for High BP, pills for Edema, pills for Sleep. Miserable. I got winded cracking my knuckles.

Right = 250 lbs. All pills above Gone. I run the Spring Lake 5 in 60 days.

Two Years of Pain. Seriously, I have been mostly hungry going on two years. It has affected me deeply. Some good, some bad. But I ask; which person in those pictures looks happy?

Fuck yes I'm Gloating.

Congrats Mizzle!

You are looking fit and good. I ran the Spring Lake 5 a few years ago and finished 17th but I don't think I could do anywhere near that today. I've lost the excersice bug lately and well... I just gotta kick my own ass back into shape.

Best of luck.

But next time, wear longer shorts in the picture. We almost met the teacher's pet.

Actually, big congrats to you. I like the diet. I've always felt that I'd rather be hungry while still eating foods I like, than to be hungry while eating stuff that I hate.

They're redder in the fat picture because when you're huge like that and that tall your body radiates a Ton of heat. Think of the constantly sweating Chris Farley, just without the crack and hookers.

So your body sends the blood to the skin to cool off. Being fat was hard work.

Mizzle - you look great. I sent this page to my uncle who never listens to ron and fez but is over weight. I hope it will motivate him to lose some weight. he is on a bunch of pills and recently had to start taking pills because he has diabetes. His doc keeps telling him to loose weight.

This is part of the reason why our health care costs are so high - too many fucking fatties in this country.

Congress, though, is trying to pass legislation which would protect fast food companies from being sued by the tobacco companies, and frankly, I'm totally in favor of that. Because it might be one thing to give money to the families of those who've died of lung disease, but I'll be damned if I'll sit back quietly and let the courts give some fat fuck millions of dollars because he / she didn't know when to put the goddamn Big Mac down.

just using willpower with food and exercise has worked for me, and it clearly worked for you.

WE ARE STRONG LIKE WOLF.

How hard is that, really? I started a diet a couple weeks back. It's not fun. Hell, I've eaten more chicken & rice in the last month than I probably did in the whole entire previous year, but somehow I've gone for WEEKS now without eating a single McDonalds hamburger. Or a bowl of ice cream. Or tasty Little Debbie snack cakes. Because I have a FUCKING IRON WILL.

Shame more people can't be like us, Mojo!

Everytime I see people complaining about how hard it is to lose weight, I just laugh. I have exactly the opposite problem. My doctor encourages me to eat fatty, high salt foods. I don't absorb at least half of what I eat because of my disease, so I used to pig out and remain rail thin.

I say used to, of course. Now that my disease is progessing and I'm getting sicker, all that isn't enough to keep my weight up. And now I'm starting be hungry less often, and for some reason I'm starting to dislike foods that I used to like. It's like my tastes are changing and shrinking. I guess the party's over.

Just remember, though. Some of us need that ultra fatty crap.

400,000 is actually a grossly exagerrated number. It just means that if you are overweight and happen to die, obesity is blamed as the cause of death. For instance, an obese car accident victim is racked up among the 400,000. Check out consumerfreedom.com

Manipulated data aside, congrats to Mike for having will power of stainless steel!

For the sake of arguement, let's assume the above is correct.

A more important number, and why R+F brought it up, is how many will die in the future. The study showed the rise in the *rate*, how quickly obesity is catching up to the others causes of death; tobacco, booze, cars...

Even more important then numbers; let's look around us. That we are getting Huge can not be denied.

------

To put up that photo was very tough. It has brought two family members to tears. This post best fits in the Confessional, because the real thing isn't Losing the Weight, the real thing was Being one of the Obese. It fucking Sucked Out Loud. I was a Freak. Felt that way, at least.

And the damage is done. The time lost can not be recovered. I have most certainly taken years off my life. That is not so Easy.

------

Back on the plus, you people fucking rock.

and if you get shot while stoned, they list weed as a cause of death. all those stats are scewed like that, so we usually just go by them cause all are fucked up equally

i forgot to bring this up before, but i was wondering this Mike, how much of a portion did you cut down. Out of a meal that you would have originally eaten the whole thing, about how much did you nopw leave behind? And were you eating 3 meals like that a day or did you have any different eating habit?
By the way, when i asked about the color, i meant that in the second picture your legs are a pink color and your arms and hands are an almost yellowish color.
