Some called me crazy when I posted it as a choice in my VP poll question a few weeks ago (ok, I think only one person did); I also reported that the domain name for "KerryMcCain2004" was already taken by a squatter; I heard it echoed on one of those "talking heads" shows over the weekend; and now...!
Sen. McCain Open to Being Kerry's VP (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=694&e=1&u=/ap/kerry_mccain)
"John Kerry is a close friend of mine. We have been friends for years," McCain said Wednesday when pressed to squelch speculation about a Kerry-McCain ticket. "Obviously I would entertain it."
But McCain emphasized how unlikely the whole idea was.
"It's impossible to imagine the Democratic Party seeking a pro-life, free-trading, non-protectionist, deficit hawk," the Arizona senator told ABC's "Good Morning America" during an interview about illegal steroid use. "They'd have to be taking some steroids, I think, in order to let that happen."
And he's right...of course it's not going to happen. I think you stand to lose more Democrats than you could win Republicans. Something like this, however, does ignite the fantasy of having a President that really tries to unite as much of the country as possible, instead of simply uniting his own party.
Still, at the very least, it's nice that he is one of the few Republicans not jumping on Kerry, bashing him anywhere he can (right now).
It would be nice to think that Kerry would consider everyone available.

How is he even close to being a Democrat, Keith? The guy makes Lieberman look liberal.
Still, it's a great ticket idea, however unlikely. Such an attempt to have a shot at some kind of unity would be a great thing. Oh well.

i remember mccain was on the daily show, and jon stewart asked if he would be open in 2004 to being bush's vp if chaney dropped out due to health reasons. McCain said "The VP sits in charge of the seanate, something that runs it's self. I can't imagine a more boring job. No thanks"
So I guess it's not the job, it's Bush.

Because MoJo, why would a REPUBLICAN switch party lines to go with a guy who is the opposite of what the republican party stands for?

I just don't see the Democratic Party taking McCain. They already have enough on their hands trying to differentiate Kerry from Bush.
I'd looke for the VP candidate to be someone who moves further from Bush than Kerry is. That way they can try to stem any people who are on the fence and considering Nader.
Here's a dark horse option: Sen. Evan Bayh. Former Governor of Indiana (a typically republican voting state). He's a Democrat who follows the party line in many areas, but is fiscally more conservative. Being from the Midwest, he might appeal to the voters in Ohio (an important swing state this campaign).
Will Bayh be tapped? I doubt it, but look for a Candidate that has a similar type of background.

"It's impossible to imagine the Democratic Party seeking a pro-life, free-trading, non-protectionist, deficit hawk,"
That was pretty much my attitude, followed by me calling you crazy. McCain loves having his name out there. I am the world's biggest McCainite, but I would not vote for him for VP if it meant electing someone who I disagree with on a great majority of issues. I'm pro gay marriage and we even disagree on that!

Because of the reason I brought up.
And who says he can't stay a Republican if he became VP?

well maybe because it might be good for the country. In parliamentary governments, like Germany's and Britain's, the prime minister almost always picks people from rival parties to serve in the cabinet. It makes politics work better. And while I can definitely see the difference in the situations, I don't understand why McCain would be giving up on his politics because he served under a guy who was from an opposing party. If anything, he is bringing his p of v to the forefront of the country. Hey, it worked for Thomas Jefferson.

Maybe not.
"Since the 1960s the Republican and Democratic administrations have switched places on economic policy. The pattern is so well established that the generalization can no longer be denied: The Republicans have become the party of fiscal irresponsibility, trade restriction, big government and bad microeconomics."
---Financial Times, Sept. 13, 2002
I would add that the (snicker) "Bush Doctrine" is nothing more than a wildly liberal Wilsonian construction.
Should Kerry turn out to be a Clintonian "New Democrat" and hold down the growth of the government, hold down the budget and eliminate the deficit, then McCain might feel right at home.

McCain said that he is happy in the Senate and that he does not want to be VP but nothing is etched in stone. I wouldnt be surprised if Kerry chooses McCain as his running mate.
Also McCain is a very likely person to be part of Kerry's cabinet if he wins in November

I'd say making him secretary of defense is more likely...if anything at all, which is the most likely option.

Its been noted that McCain and Kerry are really good friends. There was alot of talk on the cable news channels about McCain being a higly probable Sec of Defense. Wouldn't come as a surprise to me if that were to happen

Agreed. He'd have more influence being SECDEF, or contining to be a committee chair/senior senator for that matter.

Then I guess Kerry doesn't get your vote. McCain's stated that he's not going to be anyone's VP, and that, despite his friendship with Kerry, he's supporting Bush.

This topic was again brought up to John McCain this Sunday on Meet The Press (McCain hilariously asked if the camera can go to palm trees, ala the Powell snafu earlier in the show). McCain said he 'categorically will not run with Kerry and he fully supports President's Bush's reelection." I'm pretty sure he said that last part with his fingers crossed though.

That's why McCain is so widely popular - his loyalty is to his country before his party.
