Mumia Abu Jamal has been the center of alot of controversy. One side wants him to be put to death, while many people including alot of actors and actresses as well as world leaders have come to his defense saying that he should be released from jail due to tampered evidence, and false testimony by witnesses. I have yet to do all my research on this case, I want to fully read both sides of the case before coming to a conclusion and opinion, but i'd like to get different views opinions of people who have done their research on this case.

As far as everything I had read it was a screw-job by the Philadelphia Police who have had a hitory of being pretty crooked around the time of Officer Daniel Faulkner's murder. I don't remember the whole story but there was some stuff going down with Mumia's brother and the cops were then harrassing Mumia a few days after the incident with his brother. I am not exactly the best worded when it comes to political things and I usually keep my mouth shut casue i can't explain things well in type. I have to read things over before I completely stick my foot in my mouth here but I do think he was screwed. I say Free him though.
I need to read over this information that I have.

I don't know if he's guilty (Though it wouldn't be much of a surprise if he shot that cop trying to protect himself and his brother, still not right at all), but there were mad shenanigans going down with the Philly PD in this case, and Lord know's how many others. Just look what they did to MORE. That's BEYOND fucked up.
Why was Mumia's brother getting the beating that night in the first place?

Can anyone on either side of this issue answer my question?
Or is everyone just as clueless on this as I am?
Yeah, I thought so.

I think he is guilty but I do think that the cops probably tampered with evidence and other nefarious things of that nature. So I don't think he should face capital punishment.

I know Furtherman quoted it already.
Why was Mumia's brother getting the beating that night in the first place?
Again, I have to re-read but there was something that happened with his borther geting pulled over on the Schuylkill Expressway and there being a struggle there brought on by the cops casue he was the head of a Black Panthers group within the city.

Maybe i'm just young and undereducated, but can i ask what you are talking about here?
As for Mumia, i had never heard about anyone wanting him freed. As far as i had known, what was wanted was a fair trial. The reason being that some believe that there was a lot of conspiracy going on in his case, and since it was a death penalty case, they want a fair trial before they send a man to death. i don't remember ever hearing about a question of his guilt.

MOVE, MORE...I'm still an idiot. Thanks for the corrections.
Basically the local PD dropped a bomb on the townhouse HQ of this group, literally. Burned down a whole block of houses. Monstrous.
I've been reading up on this case because of this thread, and it's pretty fascinating. Based on the available evidence, Mumia is pretty much almost certainly guilty of a jail-worthy offense, and should be behind bars for now. But, as some have said here, putting this man to death at this point would be a travesty. His trial was a sham, and given the state of the PD at the time he was arrested, executing him would make our notion of the death penalty an even bigger joke than it already is.
Does he deserve to be on the streets for what he did? No. Does he deserve a new trial because of the way he was convicted, and his sentencing? You bet your sweet bippy.

but there were mad shenanigans going down with the Philly PD in this case
Strong disagreement. The Philly PD engaged in mad shenanigans during that time period, but I have not seen much evidence of it in this particular case. That's basically the only thing holding his defense together. Any evidence against Mumia is just more racist lies in the eyes of Mumia. His answer to any objective evidence is that the racist police force is conspiring to have him eliminated.
Why was Mumia's brother getting the beating that night in the first place?
Honestly, I have heard that he was being questioned, but I have never heard he was being beaten. With the family's history, there may very well have been a justified reason, but it is not fair for me to speculate.
I think Mumia is as guilty as the day is long. but I am also against the death penalty. That's another thing about this case. Everyone turns it into a deat penalty debate, when there couldn't be a more inappropriate case to use as an example. IMO, this is an open and shut case where Wesley Cook is clearly guilty. There are many cases where the defendant really could be innocent and the anti-death penalty crowd should be using them to further their cause, not this vermin.

His trial was a sham
Strong disagreement. His trial was a sham because he made it a sham. Every time the system tried to help him, he fought it. He had total control of the jury selection, $13,000 to hire various experts which would have helped his defense (a far sight more than the customary $250 granted to the defense), and even rejected the offer of a court-appointed expert public defender.

If Philly wanted to be preagmatic, they would've just reduced his sentence to life in prison, but in doing so, they would look like they are waffling. in fact if they do anything, Including giving him him a new trial, which i think he deserves because of all the shadyness surrounding the previous one, the government will seem weak.
He should be retried. If he's guilty, he'll be found guilty. If not, he won't. But you can't send a man to death in the midst of all this. (They're probably just gonna wait for him to die in prison and hope this just blows over)

I also think there should be a re-trial. Not because I think there was any shadiness with the first trial (which there was not), but because when this trial is complete, it will put this entire debacle to rest.
