Are they like the Knights of Columbus which is a Catholic based Religious mens group? or more like a social club? On long island there was a shooting in one of the initiation rites. My cousin is in the Knights and they also have initiation rites which are secretive

I don't know much about them. I do know that some christian organizations look upon them as some sort of cult. I think Gov. Pataki was going to join but the Catholic Church asked him not to and he didn't join. This is from memory so don't quote me on it.

Most, if not all, of our founding fathers were Masons...

I know my Great Granddaddy was one....still have his Masonic Ring around here somewheres...

I think its the fact they're so secretive is what makes them frightening and confusing...i know they have all sorts of "secret signs" and such...I remember reading a story when Custer and the rest of the Yankee Cavalry got into a big tangle with Mosby's men in the Valley in 1864, and there were lots of executions going on between the two groups. One of Custer's men was being led in a group to be executed, but he recongnized one of Mosby's men as a Mason, and signalled him with a masonic distress sign, and was able to get out of his predicament....

EDIT: The reporter i think talked to the head of the Masons in NY, and he wasn't sure what the hell they were using a gun for in that initiation...I read in the paper this morning they tie you up and blindfold you and make a "loud noise" to scare you for some reason....evidently, they wanted this guy to think he was being shot at and hit, because someone was around him to rattle some cans or something to make him think he was hit..

This thread got me a little curious about Masons and all that, so I did a little google research and found this kooky website about Christians trying to get people out of the Masons. Here's a little excerpt-

<b>Leading a non-Christian out of the lodge</b>

If a person is not a Christian, they are headed to hell. If a Mason does not claim to be a Christian, or you can tell from talking with him that he does not know Jesus, it is first necessary to lead him to a saving knowledge of Jesus. Until he is ready to accept Jesus, it makes little difference if he is involved in the occult or not. If he leaves the occult organization, he is still headed to hell, unless he accepts Jesus Christ as his savior.

Those wacky Christians.

The site also showed some cool secret handshakes. This one's called the "Boaz" and it comes with some crazy shpiel.

I actually think if you Google one of Ronnie's favorites, "Maha Bone", you'll find it has something to do with the Masons. Something about a secret word that no one knows so they say that instead or something. I also thnk The Masons started during The Crusades, or were the original protectors of The Holy Grail, perhaps. I forget, I get my secret societies all mixed up.

The Masons started as a secret society but through the years, it's degenrated into more of a social club that continues to keep some of the old secrecy and traditions.

Actually, I'd suggest reading the book. The story itself is fiction, but the amount of research Alan Moore put in there is astounding, especially for people who want to know all about the Masons during their height of power. Anything anyone would want to know about the Masons at the turn of the 19th century, and then some.

What kind of organization are the Masons?

An organization is a singular word. Therefore, you should not use "are", but "is" ,to describe the noun. Simple Schoolhouse Rock.

By my house there is this hall called Odd Fellows. I think they are also related to them.

I've been thinking about joining, but don't have the time at the moment. I talked with a priest at my school about it and he said the Church currently has no problem with the Masons, but this wasn't true in the past. So, I find that Pataki story hard to believe (besides, he's pro-choice).

The Masons do not endorse a specific religion, but require theism in order to gain membership.

By the way, neither Bush is a mason, so that picture is probably forged unless he was required to wear that while giving a speech at a temple.

"The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" was comissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte as a piece of anti-Semitic propaganda. It has been contributed to by at least 70 different authors over time. It is a relatively obscure text, except among the lowlife racist, subhuman pigs who are ignorant enough to believe absolutely anything in the name of hatred. Anyway if the world is under Jewish control, why isn't Goldberg in charge of the WWE instead of Vince McMahon?

The FreeMasons along with the Knights Templar, Illuminati and many others started as secret societies to protect ancient secrets. The Masons in the movie From Hell were poorly represented because even though Jack the Ripper was a mason he was considered an outcast. The masons were there to protect the secrets of the queen. Masons today are basically a social club "fraternity" with smaller "sororities" for the women who are interested in joining...

The Templars and Rosicrucians were represented in the book The DaVinci code as a secret society who protected the secrets of the goddess; Mary Magdalene, black Madonnas, Isis..
The gospel of Mary Magdalene was one of 3 major gospels considered heretical by Constatine and the Catholic church. This does not mean they are wrong, just not recognised. The templars got a bad rep because the church not only deemed them not worthy but they were the target of the Crusades, but there were rumors of sadistic rituals and homosexuality. DaVinci did not help this by actually being a homosexual but painting obscene paintings about Jesus. Templars in modern day may still have those secrets of the Grail and Gospels but are taken as another fraternity.

The Illuminati, I have not researched as much but according to the fictional novel The DaVinci code, was/is a group off of the Catholic Church that teaches self dicipline by wearing a chalice (inverted spiked leg strap that cuts into the flesh) and whipping yourself for the sins that you have done during the course of the day. (In my opinion Jesus is the one who forgives not the inverted spikes) but that is what I gathered. The second mention of the Illumanati is in the movie Tomb Raider where Lara's father was protecting the secrets of the time travel thing, with no mention of the chalice.

Out of the three The only one I feel that is a "cult" is the Illuminati, the other two were a group to protect vital historical events and/or documents. The societies websites do cover this in saying they do not represent any religion they respect all religions and focus on the brotherhood. In fact there is a bible to represent God as a generic belief in the Mason's meetings. So not to offend anyone.

Below is a list of links to secret societies and some of their famous members. I recommend reading; Templars revealing the true Identity of Christ (or something like that it's been awhile) if you would like to learn more... I hope this helps.

The Masons in the movie From Hell were poorly represented because even though Jack the Ripper was a mason he was considered an outcast.

That's ok, she doesn't know what the Illuminati really was either. But she read one of Dan Brown's books, so she must be an expert.

You'd be surprised as to how much fact there is behind the fiction. While obviously some of it had to be fabricated in order to tell the story, a lot of it was based on a ton of true research.

This is a broad BROAD generalization to make, but 95% of the cars I see with a mason medallion/sticker/custom plate are owned by black people. I doubt that the people who claim Masons determine world affairs also argue that blacks are in on it... Just a thought.

Freemasonry arrived in America by way of British Colonialism, in the 18th century, during a time when slavery was legal and racial attitudes were clearly not what they are today. One of the requirements to join a Masonic Lodge is to be "free-born." Although some slaves at the time earned their freedom, they were not welcomed to be a part of the fraternity. While brotherly love, relief and truth are supposed to be the three great tenets on which the Order was founded, they were as hypocritical to the Masonic Order of that day, as were the drafters of our Declaration of Independence - some of whom were Masons themselves.
Interestingly though, while there were no men of color among the Freemasons prior to 1775, on March 6 of that year, fifteen men of color were initiated into Freemasonry by Sergeant John Batt of the Irish Military Lodge No. 441, attached to the 38th Foot of the British Army-one year before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Among them was a man who would become their first Master (Masonicly speaking, of course) and is now immortalized by African-American Masons. His name was Prince Hall, and this group of African-American Masons, located in Boston, began meeting as a Lodge; and were formally chartered by England in 1784 as African Lodge No. 459.
Since then, due to slavery and racial segregation, the descendants of African Lodge were left with no other choice but to develop a separate Grand Lodge system, known today as Prince Hall Masonry. Unfortunately, racial feelings of the era caused Freemasonry for African-American men to develop independently. While there are those among the ranks of Non-Prince Hall Masons who would deny the legitimacy of Prince Hall Masonry, Prince Hall Grand Lodges have the exact same beliefs, follow the same rituals, and teach the same biblical heresy as taught by all regular Freemasonry throughout the world.
The United Grand Lodge of England (U.G.L.E.), generally recognized as the Mother of all Masonry, saw fit to grant recognition to Prince Hall Masonry in this country. Yet, there are lodges in this country that refuse, to this day, to accept the U.G.L.E. acknowledgment that Prince Hall Masons are legitimate, and still continued to bar black men from entering their lodge rooms.

By the way, it seems none of us have answered the question so far. All I can assume from the information given is that Mason's were just an organization. I just don't know what EXACTLY they are. What's there purpose?

I assumed then that Lain knew the secret handshake and wondered if she saw National Treasure as yet. "I didn't see it," she says. "I lived it."

"But you know where the Masonic treasure is," I tell her. "I'm not allowed to talk about it," she giggles. "Nobody will talk about it. After a certain age I wasn't allowed upstairs at the Masonic Lodge anymore. When I was little, I was allowed. But they don't worship the devil like everybody says!

Oddfellows local 151 behind the firehouse
Where Peewee sits to prove a sage to teach
Peewee gathered up his proof
Reached up and scratched his head
Fell down and hit the ground again

Firehouse. Firehouse.

Why do the heathens rage behind the firehouse
Where Peewee sits upon the wall to preach?
This boy and girl that gather pearls
Of wisdom falling from his mouth
Wash off the blood, wash off the rum

I performed comedy at a Masons Hall (insert joke here) AND IT WAS VERY STRANGE.

Imagine an audience with everyone wearingall funny looking hats of different colors with strings. When you performed the room was a big auditorium type, but the people were only allowed to sit on the perimeters faving the inside of the room. Imagine every seat with the chair back against the wall, facing the other side of the room. VERY ODD

the floor itself was obviously barren but there was all kinds of weird designs on it. Oh yeah, no MAson jokes either. Most of them were close to dead.

ive known a few masons as well as researched on them quite a bit in the past.

they certainly arent devil worshippers, they are a very close knit group however and are involved in lots of charities especially those helping children.

one of the main questions when your applying to become a mason is do you belive in god/ a higher power etc.
most of the guys ive met were christians and catholics, so belief is important for them.

i know the initiation rituals and while they are strange to those who arent familiar with them the basis of the ritual comes down to trust and loyalty, the feeling is you have to trust your fellow brothers with your life.

i think they have gotten a bad rep, some of the guys ive known were in it almost 30 yrs and dont seem weird or stranger then anyone else.

The Freemasons are for the most part just a social club these days. Back in the day, they claimed to know secrets, and those secrets were basically the king making cerimonies of the Egyptians. Its what all their initiation rituals are based on. There was no solid evidence of it before the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. The Dead Sea Scrolls confirmed what Masons claimed back in the day, that Jesus was not the son of God, but basically a political activist in his time. They also indicate that when Jesus died, he left his authority to his brother James. This contradicts Christianity because the Catholic church insists that he left his authority to Peter, who then gave it to the Pope and that is the foundation of all Christianity.
According to these the scrolls, Jesus was a member of the Qumran community where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. This community was Essene, witch is a small sect of very devout Jews who saw the normal Jewish community as currupt and were attempting to creat a new leadership for the jewish community. Thats what Jesus and James were doing before Jesus got crucified.
They also say that the creation of Christianity, was th work of Paul, who after Jesus's crucifiction, met with JAmes, learned a lot about the Essenes and JEsus and took up a facination with Jesus, and he started the whole focus on Jesus as a savior and whatnot.
So these beliefs, in the past have caused many Christian religious heads to wrongfully say that the Freemasons are satanic. Theyre not, they just dont perscribe to Jesus being the son of God.
The Freemasons do insist they are not a religious group though, they allow anyone to join of any religion, and they prohibit the discussion of religion and politics at their meetings.

Basically, a long time ago, they found out some information nobody liked, they were secretive about it, nobody liked em for it, but these days, its just a club, with cerimonies to make people feel like theyre a part of something big. There is a lot of interesting history with them though. If you want to learn more, a good book to read is The Hiram Key by Christopher Knight and Robert Lomas.

The Masons are a group that has very important, medieval, building secrets. Nowadays we already know this information but in the middle - ages the art of building was almost a sacred art. The people of those days saw the Masons as the supreme builders and it was accepted, even by the church, that the Masons had recieved their knowledge about building the most beautiful structures from God and from the older civilasations. The first Masons appeared ages ago and it is believed that they were in fact the druids that died out century's ago. That's were their strange symbols and stuff come from. Some symbols of the Masons, such as the moon and the sun and a key, can be seen in big structures and towns in Brittain. Those towns have been constructed by Masons or their relatives. Those symbols are also very powerful druid symbols and are seen in many religions that have/had something to do with the druids and the Masons. Anything else? Maybe about the Illuminati or the Knights Templar? I am in fact a dutch historian and in my search for the Illuminati I saw that there was a discussion in wich the word Illuminati was used so I joined this site and posted this to help...

They have got rings to reconize each other. It is forbidden to cause harm to another member of the group. If they do that it is possible that the group will throw you out, in other means, kill you. It is forbidden for a member to leave the group because once you have left it you might talk about their secrets. If you leave it anyway you will be an outlaw to them. O, yes, the Illuminati. They are a group that believes in science, not in God. They are the oldest enemy of the church. The church tried to eliminate the Illuminati (the enlightend ones) because they were finding more and more proof that religion was a fake. The church feared for their position in the world and killed a lot of members. The group became outlawed and they went 'underground'. It is believed that they will come back someday and reveal their scientific discovery's to the world. There have been a lot of high positioned Illuminati members like Leonardo da Vinci (he was also a grandmaster of the Priorij of Sion and a grandmaster Mason) and they were members of al sorts of secret groups. Leonardo was an opponent of the modern church because it kept some things hidden from the public. And so were the Illuminati... The church is still fighting with some of these groups today. If you want to know more you might try and send me an e-mail.

To learn the truth you must learn this: do I want to know the truth and can I handle the truth?

For a secret society, people seem to know an awful lot about them.
Not very good at keeping secrets.

I, on the other hand, am President Pope CEO Grand Poobaa of a super secret society that has all the answers to all the great questions of life. But we are able to keep a secret.
Oh FUCK! I'm not supposed to tell anyone I'm Grand Poobaa! THE SECRETS OUT! I HAVE TO KILL YOU ALL!!

Maybe it's SECRET DaVinci code. Rings are round, turtles are round...they might sending a hidden message in the way they spin their weapons that can only be decoded with a mason power ring that will tell them to drink more ovaltine.

There is corruption in the Catholic church and has for a long time there is nothing new there. Masonary only becomes secret at the 33rd degree and they do worship lucifer if you actually do some real research you will find out their New World Order agenda..

I suggest you actually do some real research and check the findings of Alex Jones, and others alike instead of acting like athiest pride hurders.

Basically, we cleaned house. Most of the threads on the Top 5 were threads that had been locked because they hit 50+ pages, and we wanted people searching the site to be able to actually post in the Top 5 threads if they wanted to, so we moved the old locked threads to the Staff Room.

See now that explanation works for me. So to all those conspiracy nuts that believe that posts are being deleted and they are being censored and all that other good stuff. All ya have to do is ask.

Well, the things said in the "Person Above You Threads" could have brought down the entire country.

And the inflammatory rhetoric in the "Hot Chic Pic" threads? TOO HOT TO HANDLE.

Yeah, and any old threads like that, that were locked for size reasons and moved just to keep the Top 5 open, anyone can see them if they have a reason to...just ask.

One more post, Doogie...ONE MORE!

The Templars and Rosicrucians were represented in the book The DaVinci code as a secret society who protected the secrets of the goddess; Mary Magdalene, black Madonnas, Isis..

Good novel/movie references BBKF, but I found that a better explination of the Illuminati were in Browns other book Angles and Demons.
If you liked DaVinci code you will like this one as well.
Give it a read. You get the background on Illuminati within the 1st few chapters.

Beware though the danger between entertainment and facts. Or to put it more simply as per Professor Indiana Jones "...there is a difference between truth and fact". As entertaining as Brown's books are, they arent the full truth. Dan Brown puts what the facts are in the first few pages and you can see he adds a lot of entertainment thereafter. Or as is seen in many movies "Based on a true story." Translation, not everything contained in this work is the truth, but follows somewhere near historical facts.

True, but even if it isn't full of facts, you can still learn from it. The book can even inspire you to do some research. I was reading the book and not long after I finished it I started digging in my bookcase and found some interesting things, and I can tell you: most of the things in the book are real. The only thing that isn't real are the characters and some things about the society, he couldn't know all that stuff. Dan Brown has got a Mesa club card though...:)

To learn the truth you must learn this: do I want to know the truth and can I handle the truth?

umberto ECO's 'Baudolino' and 'Foucault's Pendulum' are far superior examinations of the masons especially 'Foucault's Pendulum' and much better writing. dan Brown is for the people who like dan rather and read time magazine. Not that that makes you a bad person. Alot of people own thier double wides.

read the book: The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail by Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh and Henry Lincoln. It's one of the most important works about the Templars and the Masons and that stuff. It's really cool!
