There are so many out there, but in my opinion the one that stands out the most is Sittin on the dock of the bay by Otis Redding, damn what a sad song that is

Sittin in the morning sun,
I`ll be sittin' when the evening come,
Watching the ships roll in,
And I'll watch 'em roll away again, yeah,
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay,
Watching the tide roll away, ouh,
I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay,
Wasting time.

I left my home in Georgia,
Headed for the Frisco bay
I have nothing to live for,
Look like nothings gonna come my way,

So I'm just go sit on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away,
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay,
Wasting time

Look like nothings gonna change,
Everything still remain the same,
I can't do what ten people tell me to do,
So I guess I'll remain the same, yes,

Sittin' here resting my bones,
And this loneliness won't leave me alone, yes,
Two thousand miles I roam
Just to make this dock my home

Now I'm just go sit at the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away, ooh
Sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wasting time

FIRE SATHER!!!!!!!

What's so sad about "dock of the bay"? It's just some guy relaxing on a dock. Sounds like a swell time to me.

Long Black Veil is my favorite song. Its been done by so many people like Johnny Cash, Nick Cave and Mike Ness. Its an amazing song. Its very simple and moody.

Ten years ago, on a cold dark night
Someone was killed, 'neath the town hall light
There were few at the scene, but they all agreed
That the slayer who ran, looked a lot like me

The judge said son, what is your alibi
If you were somewhere else, then you won't have to die
I spoke not a word, thou it meant my life
For I'd been in the arms of my best friend's wife

Chorus
She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees
Nobody knows but me

Oh, the scaffold is high and eternity's near
She stood in the crowd and shed not a tear
But late at night, when the north wind blows
In a long black veil, she cries ov're my bones

Im really into depressing songs. I feel if an artist can write a song good enough to make you sit there and ponder how much your life sucks.....he/she has some talent.

One of my fav depressing tunes is 4a.m. by Our Lady Peace....if you wanna be sad...I highly suggest it

I walked around my good intentions
and found that there were none
I blame my father for the wasted years
we hardly talked
I never thought I would forget this hate
then a phone call made me realize
I'm wrong

And if I don't make it known that
I've loved you all along
just like sunny days that
we ignore because
we're all dumb & jaded
and I hope to God I figure out
what's wrong

I walked around my room
not thinking
just sinking in this box
I blame myself for being too much
like somebody else
I never thought I would just
bend this way
Then a phone call made me realize
I'm wrong

And if I don't make it known that
I've loved you all along
just like sunny days that
we ignore because
we're all dumb & jaded
and I hope to God I figure out
what's wrong

And I hope to God I figure out whats's wrong
I hope to God i figure out whats wrong

If I don't make it known that
I've loved you all along
just like sunny days that
we ignore because
we're all dumb & jaded
and I hope to God I figure out
what's wrong

The Wrong Man Was Convicted -Barenaked Ladies

Who's lonely now? Which one of us is suffering?
Who's in his cups? Which one of us recovering?
Who likes to look at pictures and cries, but way too late?
Who doesn't want to change a thing, accepting it was fate?

Chorus:
The wrong man was convicted
You know I did the deed
I thought that you would wait for me
Your wants I didn't heed

The wrong man lies beside you
And waits for you to wake
And all because I lacked conviction,
The judgment's my mistake

Who's breathless now? Who only hyperventilates?
Who'd die for you? Who's dying inside anyway?
Which one of us is sunshine and which one's growing dim?
While two men dream of you at night, do you just dream of him?

Chorus:
The wrong man was convicted
You know I did the deed
I thought that you would wait for me
Your wants I didn't heed

The wrong man lies beside you
And waits for you to wake
And all because I lacked conviction,
The judgment's my mistake

Who's lonely now? Who's reaching out to no one?
Who's lonely now? It takes one to know one...

I changed my mind; you said that I could change it back.
I wanted space, and now change has fallen through the cracks.
If I'm again beside your body, don't tell me where it's been.
It's cruel, unusual punishment to kiss fingerprinted skin.

Chorus:
The wrong man was convicted
You know I did the deed
I thought that you would wait for me
Your wants I didn't heed

The wrong man lies beside you
And waits for you to wake
And all because I lacked conviction,
The judgment's my mistake

it's my mistake

it's my mistake

A vast majority of the songs by Life Of Agony are just suicidally depressing.
And let us not forget a depressing song that the cover of it somehow makes it exponentially more depressing: Hurt by Nine Inch Nails. i don't know how he did it, but somehow Johnny Cash cover makes the already depressing song so much more.

"Leader of the Band" -- Dan Fogelberg

An only child
Alone and wild
A cabinet maker's son
His hands were meant
For different work
And his heart was known
To none --
He left his home
And went his lone
And solitary way
And he gave to me
A gift i know i never
Can repay

A quiet man of music
Denied a simpler fate
He tried to be a soldier once
But his music wouldn't wait
He earned his love
Through discipline
A thundering, velvet hand
His gentle means of sculpting souls
Took me years to understand.

The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through
My instrument
And his song is in my soul --
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy
To the leader of the band.

My brothers' lives were
Different
For they heard another call
One went to chicago
And the other to st. paul
And i'm in colorado
When i'm not in some hotel
Living out this life i've chose
And come to know so well.

I thank you for the music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom
When it came my time to go --
I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
And, pap, i don't think i
Said 'i love you' near enough --

The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through
My instrument
And his song is in my soul --
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
I'm just a living legacy
To the leader of the band
I am the living legacy
To the leader of the band.

"Two doors down"-Dwight Yoakam

Two doors down there's a jukebox
That plays all night long
Real sad songs
All about me and you
Two doors down there's a barmaid
That serves 'em real strong
Here lately
That's how I make it through
Two doors down there's a heartache
That once was my friend
Two doors down there's a memory
That won't ever end

Two doors down there's a barstool
That knows me by name
And we sit here together
And wait for you
Two doors down there's a bottle
Where I take out my shame
And hold it up
For the whole world to view
Two doors down there's a pay phone
But no calls come in
Two doors down there's a memory
That won't ever end

From the hotel to the barroom
Is just a stumble and a fall
And sometimes when it gets bad
I've been known to crawl
Freedom from sorrow
Is just two doors away
I'll escape for a short time
But I know I can't stay

Two doors down is where they'll find me
When you're finally through
Taking what's left of my life
Two doors down is where they'll leave me
When payment comes due
For the hours I've spent there each night
Two doors down I'll be forgotten
But until then
Two doors down there's a memory
That won't ever end

"How can I help you to say goodbye" - Patty Loveless

It starts with a somewhat light melancholy then just builds from there.
***********************

Through the back window of a '59 wagon
I watched my best friend Jamie slippin' further away
I kept on waving 'till I couldn't see her
And through my tears, I asked again why we couldn't stay
Mama whispered softly, Time will ease your pain
Life's about changing, nothing ever stays the same

And she said, How can I help you to say goodbye?
It's OK to hurt, and it's OK to cry
Come, let me hold you and I will try
How can I help you to say goodbye?

I sat on our bed, he packed his suitcase
I held a picture of our wedding day
His hands were trembling, we both were crying
He kissed me gently and then he quickly walked away
I called up Mama, she said, Time will ease your pain
Life's about changing, nothing ever stays the same

And she said, How can I help you to say goodbye?
It's OK to hurt, and it's OK to cry
Come, let me hold you and I will try
How can I help you to say goodbye?

Sitting with Mama alone in her bedroom
She opened her eyes, and then squeezed my hand
She said, I have to go now, my time here is over
And with her final word, she tried to help me understand
Mama whispered softly, Time will ease your pain
Life's about changing, nothing ever stays the same

And she said, How can I help you to say goodbye?
It's OK to hurt, and it's OK to cry
Come, let me hold you and I will try
How can I help you to say goodbye?

How can I help you to say goodbye?Text

-Bright Eyes- Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Halighwhile i agree with the bright eyes, they've got a lot more depressing songs than that one. see, for example, padraic, my prince, the difference in the shades, something vague, or messenger bird's song. probably the most depressing, though, is:

amy in the white coat
you take your clothes off right after school
the tea is on, the flame is blue
you hope this won't take all afternoon
the tv's waiting to talk to you
it's your naked body on white velour
but there's no feeling, just weight on you
you get nauseous now as he speaks to you
such proper language for acts so cruel
he says 'we all follow the rules
we can't very well go and break them now, can we
for you
your older sisters, i've had them too
but you're my favorite, you know it's true
you look like your mother, in that thin disguise
your parting mouth, your shutting eyes
and the way that you hate me, and the length of your hair
it's the reason i made you, it's the bond that we share
you see we're all trying to endure
you could easily go and make your own life somewhere
couldn't you?'
and you keep your eyes shut, get to school on time
where you're a bag of warm fluid
where you're the corpse in the class
you walk so near to the lockers
you lay so low in the grass
did you get that cut from the principal
did you get that bruise on the bus
you should wash your hair more
you should look more like us
i saw you walking once under powder blue skies
you looked cold still, your collar was high
and i tried to talk to you, but you walked right by
i don't know which i said then, hello or goodbye
we all want to be pure
but it isn't a very easy thing now, is it
to do?

i doubt anyone can beat that for depressing.

I always find nin's Hurt depressing. When Cash did it, he sounded like an old man who was just giving up on everything and it's just heart wrenching.

I hurt myself today, to see if I still feel
I focus on the pain, the only thing that's real

I have to agree with you, Jon - Cash's rendition of "Hurt" is very powerful. The video always makes me a little misty-eyed, and I was never what you'd call a Cash fan.

ANYTHING by Coldplay.

Not everything, but "Don't Panic" definitely brings out emotions. The first time I heard that song was in a Borders book store not long after 9/11, and it sort of haunted me a little.

So much more than lyrics that make a sad song. It's a lot with the music and sometimes even the video. This song by You Am I is particularly sad for me (reminds of a friend who I made in Australia that I never talk to anymore).

Been watching so much TV
I'm thinner than I should be
I'm like a waterlogged ball
That no-one wants to kick around anymore
An all day morning hair-do
That no comb can get through
It's all granola and beer
A calling card and a silk cut souvenir

I miss you like sleep
And there's nothing romantic
about the hours I keep
The morning when it starts
I don't look so good
Now I got a heavy heart

I talk a lot about football
And girls I kissed in Grade 4
I piss off my friends
And digging a hole just staring at the floor
Now every t-shirt's got a wine stain
I'm loving cigarettes again
I know every tune about guys and girls
and hurts and hearts and moans

I miss you like sleep
And there's nothing romantic
about the hours I keep
The morning when it starts
I don't look so sharp
Now I got a heavy heart

It's just a low rent paying,
palpitating pulp under my shirt
But there's a weight that's sitting
Oh God it hurts
Oh God it hurts

Been watching so much TV
I'm thinner than I should be
I'm like a waterlogged ball
That no-one wants to kick around anymore

I miss you like sleep
And there's nothing romantic
about the hours I keep
The morning when it starts
Oh my heavy heart

"Sam Stone" by John Prine

Sam Stone came home to his wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas
And the time that he served had shattered all his nerves
And left a little shrapnel in his knees
But the morphine eased the pain
And the grass grew 'round his brain
And gave him all the confidence he lacked
With a purple heart and a monkey on his back

Chorus:
There'e a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes
Jesus Christ died for nothin' I suppose
Little pitchers have big ears
Don't stop to count the years
Sweet things never last too long on broken radios, uhm...

Sam Stone's welcome home didn't last too long
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
And soon he took to stealing when he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime
And the gold rolled through his veins
Like a thousand railroad trains
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose
While the kids ran around wearin' other peoples clothes

(Chorus)

Sam Stone was alone when he popped his last balloon
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair
Well, he playes his last request while the room smelled just like death
With an overdose hovering in the air
But life had lost it's fun
There was nothing to be done
But to trade his house that he bought on the GI bill
For a flag-draped casket on a local heroe's hill

And of course: "Pancho and lefty" by Townes Van Zandt

Living on the road my friend
Was gonna keep you free and clean
Now you wear your skin like iron
Your breath's as hard as kerosene
You weren't your mama's only boy
But her favorite one it seems
She began to cry when you said goodbye
And sank into your dreams

Pancho was a bandit boys
His horse was fast as polished steel
Wore his gun outside his pants
For all the honest world to feel
Pancho met his match you know
On the deserts down in Mexico
Nobody heard his dying words
That's the way it goes

All the federales say
They could have had him any day
They only let him hang around
Out of kindness I suppose

Lefty he can't sing the blues
All night long like he used to
The dust that Pancho bit down south
Ended up in Lefty's mouth
The day they laid poor Pancho low
Lefty split for Ohio
Where he got the bread to go
There ain't nobody knows

All the federales say
They could have had him any day
They only let him slip away
Out of kindness I suppose

The poets tell how Pancho fell
Lefty's livin' in a cheap hotel
The desert's quiet and Cleveland's cold
So the story ends we're told
Pancho needs your prayers it's true,
But save a few for Lefty too
He just did what he had to do
Now he's growing old

A few gray federales say
They could have had him any day
They only let him go so wrong
Out of kindness I suppose

What's so sad about "dock of the bay"? It's just some guy relaxing on a dock. Sounds like a swell time to me.

Maybe because it was a much more mellow, introspective song for Otis Redding. That and the fact that the song was released a few days after he was killed in a plane crash.

I'd add:

"I Got The Blues" -- The Rolling Stones

"Nothing Compares to You" -- Sinead O'Connor

"Mother" -- John Lennon

"Til I Die" -- The Beach Boys

"So Cruel" -- U2

Pearl Jam's Black- 13 years old, heard it a 1000 times, and it just gets better and sadder everytime. The lyrics are sad, especially the last verse, but the accompanying music is haunting.

Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay
Were laid spread out before me as her body once did
All five horizons revolved around her soul
As the earth to the sun
Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn
Ooh, and all I taught her was everything
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore

And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds Of what was everything?
Oh, the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything...

I take a walk outside I'm surrounded by some kids at play
I can feel their laughter, so why do I sear
Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin round my head
I'm spinning, oh, I'm spinning
How quick the sun can, drop away
And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass Of what was everything?
All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything... All the love gone bad turned my world to black Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll ever be...yeah... Uh huh...uh huh...ooh...

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star In somebody else's sky, but why Why, why can't it be, why can't it be mine

Alkaline Trio-'enjoy your day'

so where'd you go? how was your vacation home? well obviously you were busy, too busy for me. so this is how you leave me? i'm broken hearted on the floor. my tears seep through the crack under my door. where i am locked in, shut down. i'm so tired of picking myself up off the ground. so happy valentine's day. i hope the sun's out in new york. i hope he bought you roses. i hope he bought you roses. so happy valentine's day. i hope the sun's out in new york. i hope he bought you roses. i hope he bought you roses

That song derpesses the fuck out of me. Another song that gets to me is Live-Turned my head,

Stone Sour
Bother

Wish I was too dead to cry
My self affliction fades
Stones to throw at my creator
Masochists to which I cater
You don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on'
I won't let go 'til it bleeds

Wish I was too dead to care
If indeed I cared at all
Never had a voice to protest
So you fed me shit to digest
I wish I had a reason;
my flaws are open season
For this' I gave up trying
One good turn deserves my dying

You don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on'
I won't let go 'til it bleeds

Wish I'd died instead of lived
A zombie hides my face
Shell forgotten
with its memories
Diaries left
with cryptic entries

And you don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on'
I won't let go 'til it bleeds

You don't need to bother;
I don't need to be
I'll keep slipping farther
But once I hold on:
I'll never live down my deceit

Ben Harper's accoustic version of The Drugs Don't Work

All this talk of getting old
It's getting me down my love
Like a cat in a bag waiting to drown
This time I'm comin' down
And I know you're thinking of me
As you lay down on your side

Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again
Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again

But I know I'm on a losing streak
'Cause I passed down by your street
And if you wanna show, just let me know
And I'll sing in your ear again

Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again

So baby, Woh- if heaven calls, I'm coming too
Just like you said you leave my life, I'm better off dead

All this talk of getting old
It's getting me down my love
Like a cat in a bag, waiting to drown
This time I'm comin' down

The drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But I know I'll see your face again

So baby, Woh- if heaven calls, I'm coming too
And like you said, you leave my life, I'm better off dead

But if you wanna show, just let me know
And now I'll sing in your ear again

Now the drugs don't work
They just make you worse
But now I know I'll see your face again
Yeah- I know I'll see your face again
Yeah- I know I'll see your face again
Oh- now
Yeah, I know I'll see your face again
Never coming down, Never coming down
No more, no more, no more, no more, no more, no more
Never coming down, never coming down
No more, no more, no more, no more, no more
Oh- now
Yeah, I know I'll see your face again

I can think of five songs, at least off of Pink Floyd: The Wall that put everything on this list so far to shame.

Roger Waters takes the cake for 'depressing' in my book:

As cars go by I cast my mind's eye
Over back packs on roof racks
Beyond the horizon
Where dream makers
Working white plastic processors
Invite the unwary
To reach for the pie in the sky

Go fishing my boy!

We set out in the spring
With a trunk full of books about everything
About solar devices
And how nice natural childbirth is
We cut down some trees
And we trailed our ideals
Through the forest glade
We dammed up the stream
And the kids cooled their heels
In the fishing pool we'd made
We held hands and we exchanged bands
And we practically lived off the land

You adopted a fox cub
Whose mother was somebody's coat
You fed him by hand
And then snuggled him down
In the grandfather bed while I wrote
We grew our own maize
And I only occasionally went into town
To stock up on antibiotics
And shells for the shotgun that I kept around
I told the kids stories while you worked your loom
And the sun went down sooner each day.

Chapter six in which Eeyore has a birthday
And gets two presents

Daddy...come on dad

Eeyore the old grey donkey stood by the side of the stream and he looked at himself in the water

"Pathetic" he said, "That's what it is"

"Good morning Eeyore" said Pooh
"Oh" said Pooh,
He thought for a long time

Then the leaves all fell down
Our crops all turned brown
It was over
As the first snowflakes fell
I realized all was not well in the camp
The kids caught bronchitis
The space heater ran out of diesel
One weekend a friend from the East,
Rot his soul, stole your heart
I said "Fuck it then
Take the kids back to town
Maybe I'll see you around"

And so... leaving all our hopes and dreams
To the wind and the rain
Taking only our stash
Left our litter and trash
And set out on the road again
On the road again

On the road again

Bye Bye Daddy
Bye Daddy
You can bring Pearl she's a darn nice girl
But don't bring Liza

It took too many post for Last Kiss to be mentioned:

We were out on a date in my daddy's car.
we hadn't driven very far.
there in
The road, straight ahead.
a car was stalled, the engine was dead.

I couldn't stop, so I swerved to the right.
I'll never forget the sound that Night.
the screamin tires, the bustin glass.
the painful scream that I heard Last.

Oh where, oh where, can my baby be? the lord took her away from me. she's gone
To heaven, so I've got to be good. so I can see my baby when I leave this world.

When I woke up the rain was pourin down. there were people standin all around.
Something warm flowing through my eyes. but somehow I found my baby that night.
I lifted her head, she looked at me and said. hold me darling, just a little
While. I held her close, I kissed her our last kiss. I found the love that i
Knew I had missed.

Well now she's gone. even though I hold her tight. I lost my love, my life,
That night.

And to me, 4 Walls of Raiford is kinda bad too...SKYNARD RULES MAN!!!!:

Well them four walls of Raiford, closing in on me
Doin' three to five hard labor, for armed robbery
I had two years behind, but I could not wait the time
Everytime I thought about it, well I died some more inside

And I had stripes on my back, memories that hurt
For the only time I seen sunshine is when I hit the dirt
Diggin' ditches for the chain gang, sleepin' in the cold
Oh Lord please forgive me for I could not wait no more

And I comin' home to see you Jesus
Well it feels so close this time
Please take mercy on this soldier
From the Florida-Georgia line

When they find me they must kill me
Oh Jesus save my soul
I can't go back down to Raiford
I can't take that anymore

Well these last few years behind me
Oh Lord, have been so sad
I fought proudly for my country when the times were bad
Now they say I'm guilty, when they find me I most die
Only me and Jesus know that I never stole a dime

Well when Vietnam was over there was no work here for me
I had a pretty wife awaitin and two kids I had to feed
Well I'm one of America's heroes and when they shoot me down
Won't fly old Glory proudly, put my medals in the ground

And I comin' home to see you Jesus
Well it feels so close this time
Please take mercy on this soldier
From the Florida-Georgia line

When they find me they most kill me
Oh Jesus save my soul
I can't go back down to Raiford
I can't take that anymore

I always thought Pontiac by Lyle Lovett was pretty depressing:

Pontiac Lyrics

I park my pontiac
Down the hill out in back
Late every afternoon
With a coke and a cigarette
And all of the neighbors there
They see a nice old man

And the girl there across the street
She sits on her front porch swing
She never realized
What I told her with my eyes
How back in the second war
I killed twenty German boys
With my own bare hands

And the woman inside my house
She won't stop talking
She never says a thing
She just keeps talking
And I might just leave her still
After the sun goes down
And I smoke this cigarette

if we're talking lyrics, then you'd have to have a heart of stone not to get weepy over keep me in your heart (http://www.everythingalberta.com/blog/archives/000010.html) or the kids (http://www.lyricsfind.com/lyrics/4567/44813.php)

i'd gladly be behind any committee to rid the planet of any dave matthews clone .... but ben harper makes for a good cover band for an opener, therby negating any logistical necessity for jack johnson ...

but when it comes to jill sobule, i must protest ...

i got to see her with freeedy johnston at the plaza between the trade towers in jul 2001, and she put on a hell of a show ... she did a cover od destiny's child's 'survivor' that transcended the original ...

after thinking about things lately, there is no sadder song than The Band Played Waltzing Matilda (http://www.cybercomm.nl/~probeer/band_played_waltzing_matilda.htm)

nonsense

i've seen ben harper more times as an opening act than i've seen most other bands ....

apart from 'steal my kisses,' none of his other songs have ever really distinguised themselves -- except for the interesting live covers that he's done: voodoo child, sexual healing, kashmir and drugs don't work

In honor of St. Patrick's day, a depressing song by the very best Irish, Punk band who want to be pirates. And are really based in Los Angeles:

Well I worked on the railroad
For t'pence a day
Drank down one penny
The other I'd save
I hammered and I hammered
For God knows how long
Well into madness, with each setting sun
I put my head down and I dreamt you were here
With me by the ol' tree, where no one could care

Far Away Boys, Far Away Boys
Away from ya now
I'm lyin' with my sweetheart
In her arms I'll be found

Then the sun belched upon me
You were no longer here
Lyin' in your place was my hammer and my gear
So I stamped out the fire that kept us both warm
The ashes were fallin'
Like the snow drops of old
We came to a mountain
Dynamite and she'll blow
A big hole in that rock
Like the one in my soul

Far Away Boys, Far Away Boys
Away from ya now
I'm lyin' with my sweetheart
In her arms I'll be found

We buried four workmen
They dug themselves well
They're only paddys, just paddys
Don't dig them too deep
You'll need all your strength boys
And they're replaced easily
With the heat I was melting
Into your sweet lips
Ah, your kiss takes me back
Takes me back from all this

Far Away Boys, Far Away Boys
Away from ya now
I'm lyin' with my sweetheart
In her arms I'll be found

Someone said it was Christmas
But not a tree was in sight
The only thing growin' was my will to die
Till the gaffer said `men, your work here is done'
I said `I'll see you in Hell, on that train we died for'
Never again, will I smell your sweet dream
But a pissed stained ol' gutter where.
You lips used to be

Far Away Boys, Far Away Boys
Away from ya now

Homer: What should I do with all this dirty, ill-gotten money?
Lisa: Well there are lots of needy children out there.
Homer: I see what you are saying. I need to buy a gun!

Has anyone mentioned "Every Day Is Like Sunday" by Morrissey yet? Because it would be foolish not to, especially on a cold, rainy day like today...

it's like morrissey grew up in shanty town rockaway beach .....

This is the coastal town
That they forgot to close down
Armageddon - come Armageddon!
Come, Armageddon! Come

as an almost completely unrelated side note, i got to meet morrissey once in a record sotre, and was shocked how imposing his build was .... you hear these songs for years, and think of a slight lad (closer to rufus wainwright) -- but he looked more like a lineman or rather scary bouncer

He's always been big into the whole boxing culture.

Probably into being into boxers, too.

man, the stink of freakshow is all over this thread. I neglected to actually post the lyrics to levi stubbs' tears, so here they are (the song is just one guitar and bragg singing):

With the money from her accident
She bought herself a mobile home
So at least she could get some enjoyment
Out of being alone
No one could say that she was left up on the shelf
It's you and me against the world kid she mumbled to herself

When the world falls apart some things stay in place
Levi stubbs' tears run down his face

She ran away from home with her mother's best coat
She was married before she was even entitled to vote
And her husband was one of those blokes
The sort that only laughs at his own jokes
The sort that war takes away
And when there wasn't a war he left her anyway

Norman whitfield and barratt strong
Are here to make everything right that's wrong
Holland and holland and lamont dozier too
Are here to make it all okay with you

One dark night he came home from the sea
And put a hole in her body where no hole should be
It hurt her more to see him walking out the door
And though they stitched her back together they left her heart in pieces on the
Floor

When the world falls apart some things stay in place
She takes off the four tops tape and puts it back in it's case
When the world falls apart some things stay in place
Levi stubbs' tears...

heres cky "To all of you"
The mirror doesn't look like them
I guess it never will
What would you say
If I took a piece for me?
Happiness is your best friend
It doesn't appeal to me
Have you ever seen me?

As I talk it lets you down
You're finally used to me
But they never talk your way

The universe is in your hands
That doesn't appeal to me
What would they say
If I took a piece for me?
Happiness is your best friend
It doesn't appeal to me
Have you ever seen me?

As I talk it lets you down
You're finally used to me
But they never talk your way

The mirror doesn't look like them

I've been looking for these lyrics for a few months now, and I finally found them:

The Paper Chase - Your Ankles to Your Earlobes

Shame, shame on you
And your sweet head on the pillow
Take the pills dear let your hair grow
Take a knee, believe you me
With ankles to the earlobes
Bite your lip dear make a wish girl
Bless your heart, bless your heart, bless your heart

Pox, a pox on you
So what do you have to say for yourself
When the gangbang's done and no one's left to appease?
Aren't you fetching with finger cuffs and knock-knees
We make a warm bed for the Yankees
Bless your heart, bless your heart, bless your heart

So Abby, it's far to late for me
I left a notebook on the shelf, just take the kids and save yourself
My little Abby, and soon they'll come for me
Just tell my son that I'm sorry
I'll disappear you now are free

And Abby, it's far too late for me
I left a checkbook on the shelf, just take the keys and save yourself
My sweet Abby, I hope you die laughing
All fat and cheeky on your warm bed
The raven the vulture won't circle your head
My sweet queen bee, I hope it comes quickly
I hope your thoughts don't drift to me
I'll die in here, you now are free
You now are free
My precious thing

Try not to cry all over your keyboard.

With a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound
He pulls the spitting high tension wires down

Helpless people on a subway train
Scream bug-eyed as he looks in on them

He picks up a bus and he throws it back down
As he wades through the buildings toward the center of town

Oh no, they say he's got to go go go Godzilla
Oh no, there goes Tokyo go go Godzilla

History shows again and again
How nature points up the folly of men

"Keep Me in Your Heart" by Warren Zevon. Especially since he wrote it while he was dying and it was the last song he ever recorded.

Shadows are falling and I'm running out of breath
Keep me in your heart for awhile

If I leave you it doesn't mean I love you any less
Keep me in your heart for awhile

When you get up in the morning and you see that crazy sun
Keep me in your heart for while

There's a train leaving nightly called when all is said and done
Keep me in your heart for while

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for while

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for while

Sometimes when you're doing simple things around the house
Maybe you'll think of me and smile

You know I'm tied to you like the buttons on your blouse
Keep me in your heart for while

Hold me in your thoughts, take me to your dreams
Touch me as I fall into view
When the winter comes keep the fires lit
And I will be right next to you

Engine driver's headed north to Pleasant Stream
Keep me in your heart for while

These wheels keep turning but they're running out of steam
Keep me in your heart for while

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for while

Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la-li-li-lo
Keep me in your heart for while

Keep me in your heart for while

I heard this on the radio tonight, along with the way I've been feeling, it really depressed the fuck out of me....

Mighty Mighty Bosstones: Another Drinkin' song

Gonna dive into a jive
I've dove into before
Gonna haunt a haunt I've haunted
Like a million times or more
A familiar joint
Where getting drunk's the only point
To frequent this place
With any frequency at all

Countin' on a remedy
I've counted on before
Goin' with a cure that's never failed me
What you call the disease,
I call the remedy
What you're callin' the cause,
I call the cure

Gonna sing a song, a song to you
A song I've sung before
Belt out a ballad that I've belted out
A million times or more
The words I'm gonna scream
And getting drunk's the central theme
To the lyrics, if you can
Make the lyrics out at all

Countin' on a remedy
I've counted on before
Goin' with a cure that's never failed me
What you call the disease,
I call the remedy
What you're callin' the cause,
I call the cure

Just a devotion to a potion
Please no applause
A dedication to a medication
A crutch a cure a cause
What I've counted on to pick me up
Has knocked me to my knees
Before I hit the floor once more
I'll call it the disease

Seasons In the Sun

Goodbye to you my trusted friend
We've known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we've climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and ABC's
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees

Goodbye my friend it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I'll be there

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed
Were just seasons out of time

Goodbye papa please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
To much wine and to much song
Wonder how I got along

Goodbye papa it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Little children everywhere
When you see them I'll be there

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song
Like the seasons have all gone
We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song
Like the seasons have all gone

Goodbye Michelle my little one
You gave me love and helped me find the sun
And every time I was down
You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground

Goodbye Michelle it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
With the flowers everywhere
I wish that we could both be there

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach
We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song
Like the seasons have all gone

All our lives we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed
Were just seasons out of time

We had joy we had fun
We had seasons in the sun...

Tom Traubert's Blues-- Tom Waits

Wasted and wounded, it ain't what the moon did, I've got what I paid for now
See you tomorrow, hey Frank, can I borrow a couple of bucks from you
To go waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,
You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me

I'm an innocent victim of a blinded alley
And I'm tired of all these soldiers here
No one speaks English, and everything's broken, and my Stacys are soaking wet
To go waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,
You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me

Now the dogs are barking and the taxi cab's parking
A lot they can do for me
I begged you to stab me, you tore my shirt open,
And I'm down on my knees tonight
Old Bushmill's I staggered, you'd bury the dagger
In your silhouette window light go
To go waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,
You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me

Now I lost my Saint Christopher now that I've kissed her
And the one-armed bandit knows
And the maverick Chinamen, and the cold-blooded signs,
And the girls down by the strip-tease shows, go
Waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,
You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me

No, I don't want your sympathy, the fugitives say
That the streets aren't for dreaming now
And manslaughter dragnets and the ghosts that sell memories,
They want a piece of the action anyhow
Go waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,
You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me

And you can ask any sailor, and the keys from the jailor,
And the old men in wheelchairs know
And Mathilda's the defendant, she killed about a hundred,
And she follows wherever you may go
Waltzing Mathilda, waltzing Mathilda,
You'll go waltzing Mathilda with me

And it's a battered old suitcase to a hotel someplace,
And a wound that will never heal
No prima donna, the perfume is on an
Old shirt that is stained with blood and whiskey
And goodnight to the street sweepers, the night watchmen flame keepers
And goodnight to Mathilda, too
