View Full Version : Who remembers Korvettes, Gertz, and Great Eastern

I might be stretching it with
Great Eastern. It was a store
like K-Mart or Walgreens. I
only remember coming across
one in Hicksville, LI.

I remember wandering the
record section at Korvettes as
a kid. I bought my copy of
Saturday Night Fever there (I
wished
I had saved it on vinyl
instead of destroying it!). I
recall coming across Michael
Jackson's first solo album,
Off the Wall, and thinking,
"Michael Jackson? Solo? Ehh,
he'll never make it!" No
wonder I'm not in the music
industry!!

I definitely remember Korvettes, but those other 2 are a mystery to me. Do you remember "Two Guys"?

I always heard that Korvettes was named because of it's group of owners being veterans:
Eight Jewish Korean Vets
EJ Korvettes
I guess this was true.
And speaking of other defunct stores:
Mays
A&S
Bonds
Altmans
Bambergers
and Wetson's Hamburgers!

Heckler,

I think the Korvettes name is
a "legend." Check www.snopes.com

Gertz eventually "morphed"
into Sterns...

Yeah I remember Korvettes.
I think they were eventually all bought out by Caldor, which now, at least in this area ( Upper Westchester/Lower Putnam counties ) , were bought out by a place called Kohl's.
Is there still a plave called Gimbel's around ??
I remember the only one becoming a Stern's.
How about Alexander's. You guys remember that store ??
They had a kick ass jingle on TV at Christmas time :

I tip throgh Tiffany's.
I leap at Lord & Taylor's.
But I buy at Alexander's !!

Good stuff !!

I have balls !!!

Sure I remember Bohack's and Korvettes. in fact I still have a little black and white TV I bought from there. Alexanders was an anchor when they opened the Kings Plaza Mall in Brooklyn.

Yeah!

"Does Macy's tell Gimble's?"

This expression will die out 20 years from now.

There was a Great Eastern up on Rte 440 in Jersey City...

Only thing I remember is stealing "We Sold Our Soul For Rock And Roll" and "Who's Next", along with a few other albums.

I remember the store name Korvettes and can picture the lettering on the outside of the store but not sure where it was...

Never heard of Gertz?

Gvac mentioned "Two Guys", remember that one well! It was also up on Rte 440 and the thing I remember most was when Dad took us to the Lumber section and the smell of the wood...

Yeah, I remember Korvettes.Back in the day, my best friend and I used to borrow his mom's car and drive up to the one in Springfield Mall in no.Va to shop for records. What was good about the store was not only did it have a relatively large selection, but the import section was really, really good.Albums were about a dollar more than the store in Fredericksburg where we otherwise shopped.

Walgreens and Bradlees are each gone a few years now...

And Crazy Eddie's tried to restart within the last year or two.

Well, hate to disappoint too many folks but the Korvette's "name origin" is incorrect via 11/8 Koreans . . . Having been a longtime Retail Executive - Great Eastern (Inventory), Stern's (Training), and Barnes & Noble (Employment) as well as a recently retired Librarian, I had to check up on it all. There is sort of a correlation with the Vet idea but not Korean -

According to Korvette's founder, Eugene Ferkauf, the name E.J. Korvette was coined as a combination of the initials of its founders (Eugene and Joe) and a re-spelling of the naval term Corvette, which is the airplane he flew during World War II. This claim, and the fact that the name pre-dates the Korean War by three years, contradict an urban legend that the name stood for "Eight (or Eleven) Jewish Korean War Veterans".[4]

4. Source: Claim: The discount chain E.J. Korvette took its name from a shortening of 'eight Jewish Korean War veterans,' the founding partners. Status: False. at Snopes.com

Well, since we're moving close to a decade since anyone even posted in this thread, you're not disappointing anyone.

Used to go to the Korvette's on Bay Parkway in Brooklyn (later the location of Caesar's Bay Bazaar) all the time. Fished for porgies behind it all the time.

How about Woolworth & Woolco?
