Friday was pizza day at my
elementary school and I
thought that RULED! Thinking
back on it, the pizza tasted
like the White Rose version of
a Pizza for One. For some
reason food tasted better when
we were kids.

Macaroni and cheese day
rocked, too. If it happened to
be Salisbury "Steak" day
(UGGHH!!), my mom would pack
my Partridge Family lunch box
with a Fluffernutter sandwich
(I swear, if it weren't for
the Flintstones vitamins I
wouldn't have made it out of
childhood without rickets and
scurvy!!) , some
juice in said lunch box
thermos, an apple (always
tossed it), and some cookies.

I loved Pizza day, but I have to tell you. The best school lunch day for me; elementary, middle (actually went to Catholic school for 8 years so was both), and high school, was macaroni and meat sauce day. And man once you threw in that buttered bread...Aldente'. That was like my first experience with fine italian food...

Im over here now!!

Pizza day was always something to look forward too.

My favorite was lasanga (or what passed to a little kid at school as lasanga.) They had tons of cheese on it, not to much sauce and the noodles were just right; not to brittle, and not to yielding.

I also, was forced to survive on Flintsones vitamins (loved the purple) to prevent scurvey. I also had the benefits of the nutritional content of those little dixie cups of 1/2 chocolate and 1/2 vanilla ice cream. I haven't seen those in years.

Lunchtime was always an adventure in my school. The food was cheap, and my friends and I would buy 50 puddings and jellos and have eating contests. The kids who got the "free lunch" had to stand in a special line and were mocked by the kids who paid. The ladies who worked in the cafeteria looked like they were on prison work release, and there was always a fight going on somewhere.

The best 3 school lunches were
Grilled cheese
chicken nugets
breakfast for lunch (where we had french toast stix, waffles or pancakes) but grilled cheese was by far the best. Tacos kinda rocked too. Pizza was served everyday at my schools as a "back up plan" for picky eaters. After you eat it everday for 2 years you kind of get sick of it. But our pizza came fresh made everyday from dominoes. That was pretty sweet. They made like a bajillion of them.

Elementary school: Friday's pizza/McDonald's day. It would alternate, one Friday was pizza, the next was McDonalds.
High School: Cream cheese bagels, tater tots, and chicken nuggets.

I never brought pb&j to school, but for some reason I can make a good sandwich with a cold glass of milk at home.

I went to a Catholic HS and I can remember the hot lunch being awful. Me and a few of my friends used to mike wise-ass remarks to the lunch ladies every time we went through. They used to get so pissy. One time they ratted me out to the principal. I got called into his office and he told me that ( I paraphrase ) " if the lunch wasn't up to my gourmet tastes that maybe I should bring in lunch .. "
So from then on, to spite him and his shitty food, I would order out from a local pizza place. But then later on I got kicked out for an unrelated incident and got a decent hot lunch at my mext school.
Taco day was the best !!

I have balls !!!

My mother would pack my lunch into a big brown bag. It was so embarrassing. I would throw it out on the way to school and spend my allowance on lunch tickets.

I went to catholic school, so I never had school lunches until high school. The best high school food was the french fries, by far.

i used to go home for lunch in elementary school and just watched TV though I don't remember what I ate; middle school i just had a pretzel - one of the big ones, never bought one of the school foods; high school i just had two cups of coffee, didn't eat, didn't sit, just wandered. College so far i don't eat during the day, I drink coffee. when I do eat at night, i usually like go to a restaurant/take out place/diner rather than the school cafeteria because a) i feel odd sitting by myself in front of people in a cafeteria more than I do in a restaurant, and b) I have this thing with eating in front of people who might know me.

College always produced some of the most interesting meals.

However, when we would count up what little money we had a standard luch became two 40's and a bag of chips!

Welcome nurse! I went to JHS 259 in Brooklyn and I remember that "loose meat" and the scary people who served it. We used to sneak out to the pizza place across the street but I got busted so many times I led the school with "demerits"..remember those?

The "no bake" cookies usually served with macaroni and cheese and green beans.

Around Thanksgiving was always cool 'cause they'd serve turkey and stuffing and that yellow gelatinous gravy.

cheeseburgers at Andries Hudde Middle School rocked the heezy!! I was a bag lunch kid and even though i could easily afford to just pay the dollar for hot lunch I would always gamble with the other kids for cheeseburgers. It made them taste oh so sweeter (and greeezier)!

Pepporoni French Bread pizza also of course rocked the heezy but less so. Like 2.8 or so

Sometimes the cafeteria workers would get a little extra sadistic and make the sloppy joes ahead of time, so by the time you got yours, the bun would be this soggy mess, and, dumb kid as I was, I'd still try to eat the thing normally.

Somehow they managed to burn the top of the pizza, but not the bottom.

Then I member in the early 70s they came out with some kind of hamburger substitute that was the same shape as a hamburger patty, but there the resemblance ended. It was some dry crap that was supposed to be good for you.

I still have stewed tomatoes nightmares...
