Going to California

I'm psyched, I'm moving to San Diego May 5th.

I've lived here my whole life, I think its time to try something different and I decided that I would rather look for an apartment there then here on the Island.

Its also gonna be my first time driving cross country and I'm looking forward to taking my time and stopping in as many cities as possible along the way.

Could anyone recommend a route or a place that I should definitely stop and see?

Does the board even have West Coast representation or will I be it?

I've driven to California and back alone, twice. Second time I had no AC and it was in August. Ok, I'm lying, I had my dog with me the second time. It's not really that bad if you just go straight across on 80. Depending on how much sleep you need you could do it in a couple of days or it might take five. First time it took me three nights, and that was at a super leisurely pace, leaving in the afternoon and visiting friends in Salt Lake City and Chicago.

If you have someone else to go with you, you might want to go the southern way through texas, see the grand canyon, all that good stuff, especially since you're going to San Diego and not SF, but yeah, if it's the summer, the desert sucks. I did a trip in august once from Las Vegas through Death Valley, over the Sierra, all that, and fuck that sucked. You HAVE to stay in your car because it's so fucking hot. All my jewelry got hot enough to burn me when I left the car. On the othe rhand if you're being leisurely it would be great to drive through Yellowstone, up through Montana/Idaho (maybe catch Glacier, that would be like an extra day), over to Seattle, down to Yosemite, back over to SF and then all the way down the coast, stopping in Monterey, Santa Barbara and skipping LA entirely. LA sucks.

It's a Mazda Prot‚g‚ with 74,000 miles on it, I plan to get it tuned before I go but I'm sure it will make it no problem.

My first trip cross country with my family was in a Prot‚g‚. Pretty funny.

I would recomend you not miss Colorado and Utah. There are some fantastic parks out there Rocky Mountain, Black Canyon of the Gunnison (a bit off the beaten track), Mesa Verde, Arches, Zion, Bryce Canyon (I could go on).

I-70 takes you near most of those parks. You could catch it somewhere around St. Louis and it's a cool drive once you hit Colorado. Also there are things worth seeing if you stay north in South Dakota. Mount Rushmore, the Badlands, etc...


Just remember everything is bigger out there. But you can drive faster.
