The Comcast guys came today and replaced my cable modem (which had a faulty power cord.. someone musta jiggled it too much.. dunno who could've done that). Should I have tipped them? It took maybe five minutes. I didn't even call them.. it was my roomie, who forgot about the appointment and I just happened to be home. I dunno the protocol for these sort of things. It's not like I can tip the guy and he'll make my connection faster or if I don 't tip the guy he'll take the Spike channel away. Am I an ungrateful heel?

you don't tip people because they give you perks. nor do you tip them to prevent them from taking things away from you. you tip them for doing their job well. do i have to do everything around here?

I tipped the cable guy the last time I had cable trouble. But it was a hot day during the summer and it was on a Sunday. Maybe it's the Catholic in me but the whole working on a Sunday thing seems tip worthy.

How 'bout this one? Yesterday I saw my tire was low and opon inspection, see a big nail in it. So I stop at sears because I was thinking maybe I need a new tire because it looks a little low on tread as well. Anyway, the guy comes out with this guage and says the tread is ok, maybe they can fix the hole. So I leave my car there and shop while they patch it. Ive had nails pulled from the tires before at gas stations, and it usually costs like $10 for the guy to shove that twizler looking thing into it and its done, maybe 2 minutes work. So, Im in sears, walking around looking at vacuums and shit and finally an hour and half later they call me, the cars done. I go back and the bill is $20. Now granted, this repair is probably better for me in that I have a receipt and I could return should it leak again, but still.. Should I tip them? I didnt, but the recipt had this phone servey thing that you call up and answer some questions about your experience and they give you a code for $5 off the next purchase. Afterwards I drove around to pick up the vacuum I had just bought and saved $5 on. I gave them all high marks on the phone servey. I didnt tip anyone for the repair because I felt it was alot higher then what Id pay in a gas station and took far longer for them to get to. Am I stingy?

i think you should have tipped, sr71. for one thing, the guy who actually did the work on your tire wasn't the one who sets the prices. second, you could have asked ahead of time how much it was going to cost, and then you could have made the decision to leave and go to a gas station if you wanted to. it's not their fault that you didn't.

the only time i wouldn't tip in this sort of situation is if they told you it was going to be one price, and then they actually charge you a higher one. like, i always take a cab from the bus stop to school, and it costs $2.90 every single day. i pay the driver $4. i need to go exactly 13 bocks on the same avenue i'm already on - couldn't be easier. one morning, the driver decided to turn and take go onto a different avenue. after going about 6 blocks, he then turns back onto the avenue that we started from (and i wanted to end up on), wasting tons and tons of time at all these lights and stuff. there was no reason for him to go off the avenue. the $2.90 trip came out to over $5 because of him. he did not get a tip.

When someone comes to your house and does work, you should tip, or at least offer them food and drink.

Well, since I am a Cable Guy, let me tell what I think.
You do what you think is right. We are just doing our job.
I personally do not expect to be tipped. If I do get one, I always apprieciate it. Whenever people do tip, it's usually about 5 bucks. Of course, some give more, less, or nothing at all. And that's cool. Some do offer food and drink as well. Very rarely do I take food, but some water or soda is always nice, mainly in the warmer months.

There is way too much tipping going on.

I only tip people who bring food or carry heavy items.

i always just end up giving the cable guy a soda or something.

mods on the other hand deserve only the best. a 20 spot usually does the trick when i run into them in person. that being 20 dollars minimum

If theyre drilling holes, running cable around, 20 minute job, and doing an adequate job; A Twenski does nicely, in my opinion.

Replacing a cable modem? Five minutes? Nah.

But why polish currency?

I do my job every day and no one tips me. I'm providing a service to others. That's my job. I'm not expecting a tip, nor will I tip someone else for doing their job. With the exception of waiters and such, tipping really is outta control. I want to spit in the tip cups I see at Dunkin Donuts and Subways.
