View Full Version : Do you think the deceased can contact the living?

At 415 this morning my cell phone rang, and I answered it. It was strange because I NEVER have reception in Ed's house. I always have to walk outside. So I grab the phone, and from what I thought I saw, it said, "Jen," on the caller ID. I kept saying, "hello Jen?" and I heard the girl answering, but the reception was awful, and I could not make out what they were saying. Finally, I just hung up the phone, pointing out to my boyfriend how ironic it was that the phone even worked in his house.
He gave me his cell phone to call "Jen" back, but we couldn't make any outgoing phone calls at all from it. This is even weirder because he ALWAYS has reception on his cell-- he uses it as his home phone as well. Finally, we just went back to bed.
As soon as I closed my eyes, I suddenly started to think about Tricia-- my friend who died in a terrible car crash three years ago. I couldn't stop thinking about her lying in bed trying to fall back asleep. I kept seeing her in my mind's eye in the last photograph I took of her and her boyfriend before she died. I kept flashing back to the funeral and thinking of how the mother had a closed coffin because Tricia didn't look like beautiful self anymore.
I drifted off to sleep, and we woke up to Ed's phone ringing at 5:30 (his wake up call). He gave me his cell phone so I could check my messages. When I listened to it, my heart skipped a beat; I grabbed his arm and started to cry. The first thought that came into my head was that someone got hurt or died. It was a girl weeping saying, "Girl, I'm in a bad way right now. I wanted to talk to you. You were never my friend!" Then nothing. I did not recognize the voice, and when my boyfriend checked the calls on my cell phone, it didn't even show the fact that someone called me 2X at 4:15 am.
I called up all of my girl friends at 6 in the morning, and they all were sleeping at that time. No one called me. I even went so far as to IM one of my old rf.net friends and ask if she called, and she, too, was sleeping at that time. When I called my parents to see if anything weird happened at home, they said, no, maybe it was a wrong number. But a wrong number would not call twice-- once to talk, and then call back to leave a message. I was thinking it was one of my friends who were drunk from St. Patrick's Day, but they all didn't go out because they had work in the morning.
When my boyfriend left for work, I lay in bed thinking about the phone call. I kept obsessively calling back my cell phone to listen to the message over and over. It made me feel really uncomfortable, then suddenly I thought of Tricia again, and I officially freaked myself out. I wondered if she tried to contact me. I know they say that the dead can contact you in your dreams or through telephones (1 ring and hang up with no caller ID). OK-- yes I heard it from Sylvia Brown the psychic, but whatever. I started to talk aloud saying, "Tricia, I am your friend. I always was your friend." That made me feel better, and I fell back asleep. When I woke up again at 11, I IMED my guy best friend and told him the story. He said I gave him the chills and then asked me, "Is Tricia in hell?" ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
What do you think? I'm very weirded out by this whole thing, indeed.

You had a wrong number, plus the memories of your friend and on top of that, it was 4:15am. Being jolted awake and those circumstances can play with your mind.
You know you were the best friend possible to Tricia. That is all that matters.
Edit: No, I do not think the dead can contact the living.

I'd like to believe that the dead can contact you in certain ways, but I don't think via cell phone is one of them. However, I don't blame you for being freaked out by it. Please don't be hard on yourself. I'm sure Tricia knows how much you love her.

No.
And my first thought would be to call "Jen", since if their name showed up on caller ID, I assume they're in your phonebook. Otherwise it would have just shown a phone number?

I can just imagine Jen saying "Wow, I think I spoke to a dead person this morning. They called me while I was sleeping, and then connection was all static-y"

Jen didn't go out or get drunk.

You would think that you would be able to get better phone service in the afterlife. What a bummer.

Are you calling Ed's place hell? I mean, yea it smells like animal feces (due to his basement lab), but I mean, please don't mind the smell.

ok first of all the second i got done reading your original post my phone rang and scared the friggin bejesus out of me. so thanks.
second, sylvia browne is a hack. the reason no name shows on your callerID is that the data isn't sent till after the first ring. i can call you right now and hang up before the data is sent. as far as the phone ringing in the firstplace, landlines are powered by battery and ground which makes your dialtone. somewhere along the line between the central office and your telephone set a slight short , which would make it ring, might occur on your line. (the ladies are getting excited by the geek speak no doubt.) then again it might be someone trying to call someone and the second they dial your number they hangup because they know its a wrong number, who the fuck knows.
third, those may be the two saddest webpages i've ever seen. it really blows your girlfriend went that way and i really am sorry for that.
fourth, yeah dead people not only contact us but i think they walk the earth. when i moved into a new place when i was in highschool, this old lady lived upstairs and her son owned a painting buisness and used the garage in the back of the house to store his various paints and ladders etc.
well one night at like 3:30 in the morning i see this guy dressed in all white ( a painters outfit of coveralls) and he was bringing paints and shit into the back....little strange considering the time. anywho, he looked like a normal dude in his late 30's, blonde hair and a beard. all of a sudden i hear this extremely loud scream like the guy got his leg ripped off or something. i run to the window, there is nobody there. i'm thinking he is in the alleyway, nothing outside. ontop of that, the garage door is closed. it was open when i saw him.
Now, in cafeteria the next day i'm telling my friend this story and we're at those long tables they had in the caf, and some girl is sitting there my buddy went to grammar school with. i never met her before, but she overhears my story and tells me that she used to live in that apartment and her old man used to work for the son of the old lady that owned the house, and one night when he was taking the shit from the van to the garage in the back someone killed him in the alleyway. she said she and her mom saw him all the time. thats why they had to get out of that apartment.
if any of you don't believe me thats fine. the girl asked a question and i thought it might help. i never believed in the paranormal but now i do. i've never seen anything since i moved out of there, so i'm not some nut.

My friends won't even call me from California, much less pay the roaming charges from the afterlife.

You saw the video, didn't you?
To be honest, I do believe in the afterlife and I do believe that souls "get stuck" between plains. Planes? Plains?
I experienced some freaky things after my mom died in 1977. I also experienced some very reassuring and calming things after my dad died in 1988.
A figment of my imagination? Who knows? Was I dreaming? No, I was wide awake during all my experiences.
I also realize that when I'm stressed and I need the one person who understood me the best, I will dream about my dad.
It's all subjective. I'm the last person to "dismiss" someone else's experience.

I dont believe in ghosts, but I do get freaked out when something eerie like that happens. Sometimes Im about to fall asleep and I suddenly have an image of my mom, and I call my brother to go check on her to make sure shes ok. When my wife was 16, her father died and she had this dream a few months after where she saw him fly down and talk to her, he told her he was ok and that he is happy up in heaven and not to worry, everything was going to be ok. She pleaded with him to stay but he said God wanted him back, and he flew off back up into the sky. The next day she told her family what she dreamed and they all had the same dream! :::::chills!:::::

I don't believe that the dead can necessarily contact the living on their own; perhaps if some sort of ritual or rite is involved, but not outside of that.
However, I do believe that sometimes when a person dies, part of them is left behind. Not their soul, more like a psychic impression of them that may linger around.

It's all subjective. I'm the last person to "dismiss" someone else's experience.
This is the balance that I believe is sorely needed in science.
In Carl Sagan's 'The Demon-Haunted World', sadly which came out as he was dying, he speaks quite a bit on 'fringe science' 'psuedoscience' and claims of paranormal activities.
His investigations into the alien abduction people left him puzzled, and surprised. Surprised at the sheer number of people he talked to who, it was clear, whether what happened to them did in fact happen or not, believed it happened to them.
This he could not deny, from the sheer numbers of people he spoke with or investigated; some of these people, it was clear, had horrific experiences that they wish had never occurred, and hated talking about them.
Again; who knows? Do i think these abductions are taking place? No. But again; something, and yes I know of hypoxic and hypnogogic and lucid dreaming etc. This could be a by product of the ubiquitous images of ET faces a la the ones on South Park.
Afterlife? I have no idea. The real kick for me; is that me father lives in me; as my DNA. That might come off clinical and cold, but for me, it shows that, in a very real way, part of my father is alive and well in that which presents itself to a mirror.
And one night alone in my own condo after he died; I heard him call out my name so loud and clear it scared the piss outta me. In my head? Why not. But WOW it sure sounded real.
Some things are simply a Quality of Experience.

how did i miss this thread...WOW that is really weird
a few yrs ago at my school we had this old couple come and speak to us (around Halloween time)- they were ghost chasers and go to houses believed to be haunted
i believe it is possible
i went to my mommoms masoleum one day- which i never do - not that i didnt love her BUT cemeteries make me uncomfortable- BUT when i got out to go to where she is interred A BIG OLD WASP/ KILLER BUG THING FLEW IN MY CAR!
i knew it was a sign from her... she was a surley woman- mouth of a sailor (probably where i get it from), used to drink, smoke, didnt have a very easy life at times
also at times i can smell SHALIMAR (which she wore) in my house... now i have like 2 bottles of it - well they were hers- BUT i never ever ever spray it and they are in my medicine cabinet
