ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Pakistani troops believe they have surrounded al-Qaida No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahri in an operation near the Afghan border, three senior Pakistani officials told The Associated Press on Thursday.

Al-Zawahri 52, an Egyptian physician, first came to international attention in 1981 when he was charged as part of the plot to assassinate Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. He merged his own militant group, Egyptian Islamic Jihad, into al-Qaida in August 1998, becoming bin Laden's deputy and chief ideologist.

I think it's because they're trying to force them to surrender rather than have to shoot it out with guys who are prepared to fight to the death. Taking prisoners for intelligence purposes is highly preferable.

Update: Some British rag is reporting that he's dead, killed in the battle, and that the body is currently in American custody where the Americans will be conducting DNA tests for confirmation.

U.S. intelligence sources are refuting that story. Of course, even if that story was true, we'd have to refute it until we've officially verified that it's him.

Guess we'll have to wait and see if this is just BS or not....
