What Is One Billion?

Here's the progression my Dominican friend told me:

ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions, ten millions, hundred millions, thousand millions, ten thousand millions, hundred thousand millions, billion.

No? Why? Explain this to me Oracle.

The FUCK are you talking about?

1,000,000,000

That's a billion. If you say it any other way, you're either Dominican or retarded.

Leave the Dominicans alone. Everyone knows its the Costa Ricans who are Latin America's mouth breathers.

According to the latest book I am working on (Auditor's Dictionary: Terms, Concepts, and Processes), a billion is one thousand million.

Whick makes perfect sense because one billion has three more zeros than one million.

10 x 100 = 1000

100 x 100000 = 10000000

100000000000000000 x 10000000000000000000000000= 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

Well, sometimes a billion isn't a billion.

The brits would call 1 million million a billion, where we call 1 thousand million a billion. The brits seem to be wising up though, so this may be about-to-be-becoming an anachronism.

Easiest to use, for me:

1x10^6 = million; net speak for the scientific notation of 1 x 10 to the sixth; ie. a 1 followed by six zeroes]

We tend to de-mark increases of Three orders of magnitude, hence:

1x10^9 = billion
1x10^12 = trillion

1x10^100 was a number that intrigued Ed Kasner; a 1 followed by 100 zeroes:

10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,
000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,
000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.

[EDIT: wow, without line breaks, that's a bit too wide for viewing]

So he asked his nephew for a name. The nine year old's suggestion: 'Googol'

----

The confusion on large numbers is justified. Here's some sense of scale from my Teaching Toolbox:

What exactly is a million vs. a billion?

Well; we can't deal with these, we don't know what they are, but we know seconds. 60 seconds = 1 minute, etc.

SO!

How long is a million seconds?

about 11 days.

How long is a billion seconds?

well over 30 years.

-----

For some, this seems implausible, such is our naivete. Now, for the sports fans:

Q: What is closer to Infinity; a million or a billion?

Yes, but it's an antiquated notion, per my author, who is British.

This thread was a nerd trap.

All correct answers have been tracked and you shall receive beatings for your lunch money, followed by wedgies, and finally ending with a swirlie in a dirty toilet.

Have a nice day.

My only significant accomplishment in all my years of schooling was giving a kid a wedgie in the 7th grade for "daring" to be reading a newspaper and wearing sweatpants. I'm not sure why, but I remember those being the two key factors for setting me off. So I proceeded with the wedgie, but the kid decided to act like it didn't matter, which just made me "wedge" even harder, to the point where he was almost off the ground, still holding the fucking paper and attempting to read it. Finally, the elastic in both his underwear and the sweatpants just completely snapped and gave out, and the deed was done.

Man, I've got the giddy sweats just typing that.
