View Full Version : Cancelling an AOL account

My computer recently crashed and I was unable to use my Verizon DSL account. So until we got our drive back, we used my son's computer, which had dial up. We signed up for an AOL account for the time being, which I just cancelled. Obviously, it was only going to be temporary.

So we got our drive back, got the DSL back, blah blah blah. I had to cancel the AOL account. And those friggin' robots tried to make me feel guilty. When I got off the phone with them, I felt like I kicked the guys dog. I felt like I just cursed out Mr. Rogers. What a horrible experience. "So what do like to do when you're online?" "I'm very sorry to hear that you want to cancel." "My name is Steve. What's yours?" SHUT THE FUCK UP AND JUST CANCEL!!!!! I know that these calls are "moderated for quality assurance", but I feel like saying "Just drop the fucking act and treat me like a person please. Not a child. Better yet, not like a robot child. Even better yet, not like the girl from 'Small Wonder'. " You get the point.

But now I can't stop crying.

Just watch your statements (assuming you used a credit card to sign up). When I tried to cancel my AOL account, the fucking pirates at AOL simply did not stop billing me.

For the first three months I called AOL as soon as the charge showed up & listened to the hour long, "please don't go" rhetoric. But the automatic deduction just kept showing up on my statement.

Then I begged my bank to stop paying them, but when the deduction showed up the following month, I drained the account that the debit card was attached to. I didn't have overdraft protection from this Credit Union, so the payment would be denied...problem solved...WRONG. I was hit with an overage charge. Even though when I tried to buy a tank of gas with the card I knew had no cash to back it (just as a test), I was denied.

That cycle of overdrafting went on for FOUR MORE MONTHS, until I closed the account & spent the next year fighting with the Credit Union over the charges.

Granted, this all took place 4 years ago, maybe (hopefully) the laws have gotten stricter to prevent those sumbitches from doing this. But be careful.

YES.

SWEET JESUS, YES.

I can commiserate. The same thing happened to me - I canceled the service and they kept billing me for MONTHS after the fact.

Now, the actual charge wasn't much, but still, it wasn't their money to collect anymore. The only reason they took me off was because I went absolutely apeshit on the phone with them one day and threatened legal action.

I absolutely LOATHE AOL. They're fucking thieves, everyone of them.

Couldn't you just call your credit/debit card company and challenge the AOL charges if they continue to bill you after service has been ended?

After a year of phone calls & letters, I finally got the charges erased & it's no longer an issue...but the fact that I even had to go through this was mind-boggling. The audacity of the fuckers at AOL to play with other peoples' money like that was absolutely befuddling.

Crippler I had a similar experience with NY Sports Clubs. I went in there 5 times to tell them that I was no longer a member and even took off from work to tell them. I kept getting billed while they said "no prob - we'll take care of that for you". Finally I get to meet the Head Whore in Charge and she refused to give me my money back because I had nothing in writing. They fuck up. They steal my money. Multiply 8 months of stealing from me before I got it resolved times $55/mo membership. Nice chunk of change.

Once you give somebody the right to auto withdraw money for shit like that, the cocksuckers at your credit card refuse to stop letting them withdraw no matter how much you tell them to or how many letters you write.
