View Full Version : I Need Rock

Next Wednesday evening I am paricipating in a craft class with my mother at the local public library. We are supposed to find a large smooth rock so that we can paint daisies on it to make a doorstop.
Does anyone know where on Long Island I can find a large smooth rock to paint? I suggested going to Long or Short beach in Smithtown, but my mother thinks that there will be only small rocks there. Do you think that they have them at craft stores?

Try Islip's beachs around Great South Bay
Or drive along Montauk Highway through the south shore and you'll see many side roads that will take your right down by the water where I've seen many rocks.
Also some areas around Huntington, namely around Lloyd Harbor have many areas where there are rocks as well.
If you like to go to Nassau County try Glen Cove, or Roslyn.

Also around Kings Park there's a beach called Callahan's Beach that I seem to remember having some as well. Here's a website for Smithtown with a list of parks and beaches...SmithNet (http://www.smithnetny.com/townhall/parklist.htm)

You can probably buy one at your local garden center. Alternatively, you can probably find one if you scour any north shore beach for a while. I've collected a few fairly large ones.

I have the perfect rock for you. I found it in Huntington, its about the size of a honeydew melon and smooth. If you want, Ill give it to you. I have it in my house. I saw it on the side of a road when they were doing roadwork and couldnt believe how round and smooth it was. It was rounded during the last glaciation, 20,000 yrs ago. It weighs like 20 + lbs. Let me know if you want it. Free. I call it "Jim"

Nope, "Jim" is mine! When I saw it, I was driving and turned around, almost got into an accident and grabbed it. The North shore has some of the best rounded rocks, because it was up against the glacier. The rock was carried here in it, being rubbed round as it tumbled within it. Its made of a nice light colored granite. I collect rocks. This one I was intending to eventually paint a house # on it, but the prices of homes got out of my league. I'd be happy to donate it to being a door stop. It'll hold open the most stubborn door! Plus, I have been keeping it in my kitchen, and well... who needs a big old rock in a kitchen anyway??

rocks arent smoothed by glatiation... they get smooth by sitting in riverbeds and having water carrying the sediment past... slowly smoothing it out.

The North shore has some of the best rounded rocks, because it was up against the glacier.
The south shore has good round rock too, it's just much smaller - like sand size. The north shore wasn't "up against" a glacier; it was part of a glacier - the part called a moraine - as was all of Long Island; the entire island is simply all the rock and stuff that was carried down and dumped off by the glacier.
The same way if you go to say a river delta and see that the coarsest sediment is close to shore and it gradially gets smaller and smaller, sandier and sandier until it's basically just silt as you go away from shore - that's like what Long Island is. The bigger rocks were heavier and thus "fell" before the smaller rocks; that's why the north shore has bigger, rocky beaches while the south shore is sandy - the sand was lighter and stayed suspended in the glacier longer than the bigger rocks and got dropped off a little further south. I hope that made sense.

Hit refresh to see graphic...
Here (http://www.qgazette.com/news/1999/1208/Feature/) is a link to some basic info on it. The glacier was approx. mid island, and as it melted, it dropped most of the heavy stuff near mid island and north. It also formed Cape Cod at the same time. Cascades of dirty, rocky water flowed out ot as it melted. The coast at the time was hundreds of miles south, like down by Washington DC. The reason why the oceans were so low was because most of the water was locked up behind in the ice. Sea levels were a few hundred feet lower at the time, and the continent itself was pressed into the mantle by the weight of the ice on the land. It is still rising up as we speak, which accounts for the occasional earthquakes we get here. Check out Shelter Rock, off Shelter Rock Rd in Manhasset, just south of the shopping center where Filene's use to be, on the same side, but south of the parking lot. Its the largest glacial erratic on the island. Indians use to use it as a shelter, hence the name. Cool stuff, if your into it.

So I attempted to go to the Kings Park Bluff to get myself two rocks because it is five minutes from my house, but it was not a success. There was a road block on the road that leads to the bluff, and the police officer told me that there was a police investigation going on down there! Then I had to turn my car into the Kings Park psychiatric hospital to get back to 25A. Woe is me!

WOW!! What a beautiful painting you made! Those sunflowers are awesome, even if it was on a canvas that would be something, yet you managed to get that level of detail on a rock! Maybe you can start a side business painting rocks for decorative purposes like those people in the malls when they have those craft sales? Id buy one! Beautiful! Even the petals have shading to illustrate individual depth, and I like the pattern! Great job!
