From this morning; last night, cant remember...

Discussion on Evidence of past mars oceans, the 5 visible planets, etc. Ron seems to love the astronomy stuff:

Ron on Saturn: something like 'it looks like the CBS logo. You're expecting what you see in a big picture book, and you see a Logo. You ever see that?

Fez: No, I've never looked through a telescope.

---

I'm still recovering. I want to go back to Pinellas Park county and bitch slap every science teacher Fez ever had.

If people wanna know why our country sucks out loud in science literacy; there's your answer. I can't even imagine not having seen the Moon through a scope. I set up on the boardwalks here in the summer, I swear on my Father's Grave, because John Dobson told me it was my duty as an Astronomer to go out and get people to look at the moon and planets.

FYI: Dobson invented the Dobsonian scope, a scope that can be Huge and still set up on a street corner. He is also a Zen Buddhist. He feels it a duty to go out to the public, set up the scope, and call out 'come see the moon!' exactly because so many have never seen it with their own eyes, the oceans and craters and rilles and valleys, all plainly visible in even crappy scopes. The moon blows people away. Gasps. Holy Shit! Wow! Almost always, if they have never...

I do this; I just dont bug anyone; if they look curious I step aside and say, feel free to take a look.

To get through school, and never look through a scope? Oh man that Sucks Out Loud! Our school can't even get a scope and on some nights where theres a game or something set one up? Sheeesh I'm ashamed to have been a part of this insane educational system. tenure my ass, go buy a Scope!

Q: How many here have never looked through a telescope?

Q: Of those who have, anything interesting? boring? was it ever at school?

-------

Thanx for letting me rant, and by the way, saturn looks so figgin much like the CBS logo in a small scope I almost did a spit take.

Hey, I've never looked through a telescope either! I've only used my camera's digital zoom and binoculars.

Looking at the moon is kool. Looking at the moon through a telescope is really kool. Looking at the neighbor's daughter undress through a telescope is the ultimate in kool.

Several years ago, my son wanted a telescope for Christmas...so I got him one. He set it up that night in the backyard and called me out to look at the moon. I told him I was busy, It's too cold out, the dog has to go for a walk, etc. He finally dragged me out there and three hours later, I realized I was cold and the dog still had to go for a walk...but God, was it worth it!!!!!!

I never looked through a telescope at school until college.

At home I'm rockin' the Meade Starfinder 10" Dobsonian Reflector. Although it's rather bulky it gets the job done for me. I can get a decent view of Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, and some galaxies like the Pleiades.

Oh yeah, you might like this Mike, I tricked it out with a 2.5" fan and a toggle switch to keep it from fogging up.

In my high school we actually had an astronomy class elective and we had a planetarium (sp). My science teacher was also the astronomy teacher and he would take us in there to watch movies on the ceiling or he would put on some music and let us look at the stars.

To answer your question yes I have looked through a telescope, but never at school.

My dad bought me a telescope when I was about 7. He showed me how to use it and to not look into sun all that shit. It was awesome. I used to go out everynight and use it. They bought me a book of constellations. Very cool. I have always been interetsed in science, maybe that is a reason. Mike, where do you set up in the summer?

I set up in belmar, bradley beach, spring lake, maybe up to long branch.

It doesnt happen as often as one might want. When the moon is near full it's too bright to see any details; the best views are a crescent or half-moon, where you can see shadows of mountains lying inside of craters and all that cool stuff. Plus weather, so, maybe 5-10 times a summer.

I'm so psyched many of you looked through a scope and were impressed. People can get disappointed when saturn or jupiter doesnt appear like the NASA pics; but most are blown away to see a real disc with stripes and a few dots around it in a line; hey that's cool enugh for me.

It's a weird hobby; it takes so much work to wait for weather then get everything ready and it's freezing [the colder it is = usually better seeing].

Oh: Fez also mentioned never seeing a meteor shower. Wow; even here in NJ in August, you go find a dark spot with lots of clear sky on a night with no moon; you see them every night, the sporadic ones, the around august, the Perseids. I've seen 20 an hour and thats in the worst light polluted part of the country.

Actually the whole east coast from boston to DC is horrifically light polluted. Anyone who been away and seen the sky as it *really* looks; Countless stars. That's pretty cool, but almost impossible around anyone in the R+F listening area.

I live about 18 miles from NYC, give or take. And about 8 miles from newark. At night, i can only see the brightest stars. Then one summer my parents rented a house in pennsylvania. OH MAN, it was amazing what the sky really looks like at night. The first time i saw how many stars there really were, i was in shock. If you have never seen it, it is really worth a drive to PA for the night. Plan to go to Hershey park or something, but make sure it is a clear night and bring a blanket and sit outside.
And Mike is right, if you sit outside during the summer you can see some "shooting stars" and if it is a real clear night, you can sometimes see what I think are satellites. They are a little brighter if i remember correctly.

I got a telescope for Christmas once. I could see the moon with it. But, then, we were pretty poor. Come to think of it it did say "Pringles" on the side of it.

I have never seen a meteor shower in my life. I've always tried to, but it seems to be cloudy out every time. I haven't even seen a shooting star before.

I've never looked through a telescope before. I've never even witnessed any stellar pheno except for a full moon. Never seen a shooting star or a metorite. I guess cause I livein newark and there's a lot of lights around me.

A photo for comparison: Saturn's Occultation [passing behind] of the Moon.

Now you can see why the CBS Logo known as Saturn doesnt look like the huge close up photos in a telescope; it's only a tiny dot compared to the moon. Saturn's much much bigger, but Much MUCH farther away.

If you think the Photo is cool; there is video of these occultations linked below; it looks like saturn is crashing into the moon!

I've never looked through or had access to a telescope in school. However, my brother had a telescope and we would go out sometimes at night and look at the moon. It was a pretty crappy telescope.

I might have a chance to get a Bushnell telescope (Deep Space 150x50 Telescope Refractor telescope magnifies up to 150 times. Diagonal mirror offers viewing comfort and aluminum tripod adjusts to your perfect height. ) Is this a good telescope? Does anyone have any suggestions?

i don't believe that i've ever looked through a telescope, and i've been through all sorts of school. oddly, perhaps, i'm okay with it.

(no, I didn't write it, this is from the master...)

Seen a shooting star tonight
And I thought of you.
You were trying to break into another world
A world I never knew.
I always kind of wondered
If you ever made it through.
Seen a shooting star tonight
And I thought of you.

Seen a shooting star tonight
And I thought of me.
If I was still the same
If I ever became what you wanted me to be
Did I miss the mark or
Over-step the line
That only you could see?
Seen a shooting star tonight
And I thought of me.

Listen to the engine, listen to the bell
As the last fire truck from hell
Goes rolling by, all good people are praying,
It's the last temptation
The last account
The last time you might hear the sermon on the mount,
The last radio is playing.

Seen a shooting star tonight
Slip Away.
Tomorrow will be another day.
Guess it's too late to say the things to you
That you needed to hear me say.
Seen a shooting star tonight
Slip away.
