Do you think so? I mean they didn't deny it when they heard about billy talking to cameron. They just sounded upset that Billy would say something like that to their boss.

My vote: Unhappy

Ron: Are they lifeguards or lifepussies?!?!

I suppose none of us really know what the other is feeling or thinking in the big spectrum of things. Except for Mikeyboy- he can read minds!!!

You can hear in Ronnie's voice lately the snap of digust with the DC area. From putting down the dating service thing Wendell was on, to running down the concert contest promotion, those are HUGE no-no's in radio or any media. Stern, in his baddest bad boy days, always kissed the sponsors ass. Fate tempting like that tells me Ronnie isn't worried about getting shitcanned. They could either go to FLA or probably get on the O&A satalite network. Of course they aren't going to go out and have their own sex for sam to get fired. I think they legitmately like the DC people, but living in any DC or Maryland suburb would really suck ass, with it's gentrified, prefab suburbanism. Given the choice of being back in NYC, a place where media thinks they've "made it", or at least home in the sunshine of Florida, I'm sure doing nights in DC is the last thing they'd like to be doing. But they are the prototypical professional in 2004 radio, bouncing from shifts, shows, cities, stations and doing this RIDICULOUS BULLSHIT spilit shift with rarely ever an on-air gripe. They wisely know the audience doesnt' care at the end of the day, and they just go out and try to do the best show they can do day in day out. But I'm sure they are annoyed. They are over a year in DC now, with:

1. no midday slot
2. no syndication(NYC, Philly, FLA)
3. no formal online broadcast(cough cough)

I'm sure it frustrates them to see how close they were to breaking through(the buzz was HUGE when O&A had their brain fart) and really projected to be something special. For long time pros, to get that close, only to fall back down the hill is a Sisphyan existence that I can't imagine.

That's my Ronnie inference/speculation, but I think it's clear Fez is unhappy. I'm sure his friend dying won't help, but it seemed strange that he'd miss the shows after the Big Ass Night of Shamrocks. Like he was crashing after trying to get there, hoping to recapture the magic of NY. I was at the NY BANOF I and II. Now it's hard to gauge the energy in the room in DC, maybe it was just miked poorly, but it was nothing next to the frenzy we were part of up here. It was acutally a beautiful moment in the 2nd one, as Ron and Fez, promoted as an afterthought on WNEW, stood in the ring, as the crowd sang along to the opening theme "Ron" "Fez" "HEYYYYY" and you could see them take a step back like they couldn't believe the love and what was happening. A packed house and a few thousand people outside, and you knew they had "made it". And in their mind, you could tell they knew they made it too. It was so glad to be a part of those.

Maybe I'm misjudging, but that response was not there. It's probably a good thing they did it on St. Pats, it kept down the NY fan migration and gave an accurate picture of where they stand in DC, but perhaps Fez wasn't too elated with the response. More speculation on my part, maybe the place rocked, but it sure didn't sound like it. Listen to the tapes of the other ones, they can barely speak because they couldn't hear over the crowd.

I think it's tough because both guys have been at this for a while and they probably thought they'd have roots by this point in their career, but it looks like it won't be in DC.

I will say this though. Since Decemeber or so, the show sounded the best it did since they left NY. Last summer and fall, I think they were plainly in a funk, just generally doing poor shows. A lot of that is letting the audience adjust to the staff and define their personalities, but there were a lot of poor shows in that time. Once Wonderboy broke his window, they seemed to pick up a little steam, and are almost now fueling on this "depression" rather than getting burned by it. As long as they keep moving forward, that's fine with me. Wonderboy is turning into Al Dukes lite, which is a good start.

I think The Nature Boy is right about the sounding of this last fight. If you compare listening from the fights in NY to DC there's a huge difference. But then again these are different times. With FCC files flying left and right and an order from Mel Karmazin to cut all the extreme talk out it takes a lot of air out of the shows. Ron and Fez are talented and professional enough to be able to adapt and put on a great show regardless, but with the current culture and climate in radio the shows in DC will not sound like the shows in New York any time soon.

I'm going to speculate that there probably is some truth in that the boys are unhappy. When I heard the show the other day and Wonderboy said he spoke to Billy a few weeks before, I immediately thought to myself that WB must've said something about it.

In terms of where they were in New York and now, I think they definitely were on the verge of greatness when they were in New York. They're ratings were at an all time high, they were #1, and doors beginning to open for them with talk of syndication.

I hope they do eventually get syndicated and get back on the air in New York, though I think they'll be fine and will just need to ride out the current situation in radio.

I think that they are unhappy. When they weren't on I listened to some old bits and they sounded so much happier. Perhaps it's just the whole FCC thing.

Ronnie had to say rump last week, instead of ass when he was referring to the bugs on the bug planet.

btw, bug planet = funny!!!!

I guess I'm the only one who heard Ron say last night that he really enjoys moving to a new city and starting over and breaking up whatever ruts he gets into - getting to do a "redo."Maybe he was being sarcastic, but in the context of the discussion about Wendell's fresh new start, and then about Fez and his ruts, I don't see any reason not to believe him.

I also don't see any reason to read anything more into what they said and didn't say about Billy's e-mail - he said on the air that he told Cam-Daddy that there was no truth there! He said it was simply Billy being drunk.

They weren't stolen in the middle of the night and forced to work Infinity's Fairfax County sweat shop! WJFK was their safety net when New York no longer became an option. Didn't he also mention that they mulled over returning to Florida when they came to a crossroad, and choose to stay here?

I'm sure I'd be bummed too, however they are adults who made decisions, and they are professionals in a business infamous for job instability - I honestly believe them that they have made the best out of things here.

Things that are out of their hands, are out of their hands. Alan and Cam could make things just a tad easier by giving them some more respect - get Bill O'Reilly the fuck out of there and put them on 11am - 3pm, and put The Hideout on in the evenings...OR...find another midday show, and let them do just the evening show. It's going to be a year soon that they've done this insane split shi(f)t and it's got to be maddening for them.

Maybe that first scenerio is already taking place; they actually began running promos for "The Hideout" during regular, real time daily shows. Maybe that's part of the master plan - maybe it was all along?

Who knows. It's all mind reading.

Pass the pudding.

Nature Boy,
What a wonderful analyzing you did, right on. But ...

The NYC shows (live ones) sounded like crap on the radio because they were produced so badly. Finally they have some decent techs around and the on-the-air stuff doesn't have be just shouting. But I don't know about the response either in DC, I just thought - finally the live shows sounds ok.

Fez is down for sure, but Ron is clearly ok everywhere where he's loved ...

It would be a major backass move if JFK put El Jefe and his Hi-dolt gang in any daily slot. Why do you think Ron and Fez try to keep him behind the scenes on their show now? This dullard is totally lost about how to be creative and entertaining without talking about his porno collection (or Marilyn Manson) every five minutes on his own show. And the new FCC crackdown has him treading water and gasping for air, attempting to fill airtime. Real talents like Ron and Fez will always continue to keep us laughing no matter what the situation.

Zappa, you are such an idiot.

Jefe doesn't even work on the R&F anymore, so there is no need to "keep him hidden" behind the scenes.

You don't like him or the show, that's fine, but don't act like you know what's really going on.

Ahhhhh...what a shock. I should have figured that a positive comment on Jefe who shake zappa out of hiding.

Jefe got a promotion - he's actually working behind the scenes at WJFK in programming with Cameron. To me this is more fuel to my mindless speculating that it's not a question of when it's going to happen, not "if."

The Powers That Be will not move R&F unless they believe they have a show to replace it at 7pm, that will follow D&M. The Hideout reminds me of the early days of The Junkies, which is why I think Cam has taken up the cause.

Face it: The Hideout at 7pm daily = R&F at middays = a promotion for R&F = R&F are happier = best chance of syndication = R&F are happier still.

To hate The Hideout means you don't want Ron and Fez to succeed, and more than likely you hate Fuzz Whatley.

Shame on you!

Cameron and Alan have no authority over show timeslots. That's all corporate.

Sounds like he was just setting up a bit. A fresh new start is great, if you're single, but Ron has a wife and kid. It's gotto be hard on them moving.

I'm in NY, but apparently the St Pat Spat was in a "bad" neighborhood and so the turnout was light. They said next time they'll have to hold an event in the 'burbs to ensure a better turnout.

I'm in NY, but apparently the St Pat Spat was in a "bad" neighborhood and so the turnout was light. They said next time they'll have to hold an event in the 'burbs to ensure a better turnout.

So how many people were at the fight?

It isn't the best neighborhood that doesn't have access to metro, but I wouldn't call it a "bad" neighborhood. It has a bad reputation with the white kids from the burbs, but there are worse areas - of course, some of them are near-by, but that actual area is fine. I don't know why people would have been freaked out.

The club itself gets lots of different kinds of events (yesterday "Dream" hosted a Young Democrat fundraiser, which was pretty high class, etc.), including a lot of hip-hop acts.

I understand "Saint Pats" got about 500-600 people, and pretty much filled the place - can someone that went there confirm that?? If that number is true, that's more than the previous live DC event, which was larger than the one before that, which was larger than the one before that. So at least it's going in the right direction.

Hell, you know they are getting more and more loyal, and different, listeners by just listening to all of the different callers. Tonight's show they had a ton of callers.

I hate that I missed The Spat.

Personally, I want another Hockey Night! That was a lot of fun.

Maybe this summer we can do an Orioles day (they are advertising on JFK!) or (for laughs) do a Mystics Night (if we can get tickets - they do set attendence records with the WNBA!) - or maybe something really cheesy like a day at Kings Dominion or Six Flags!

I wouldn't want to be in a position to come up with the next big live event, though. That's got to be tough to keep thinking of stuff, and then running it through the WJFK gauntlet (ie: poker night). I would just keep doing stuff everyone knew worked and was fun, like (a) fights, (b) Dave and Busters and (c) Movie Nights. But I'm ultimately lazy like that.

Anyway...MikeyBoy is (curses) right, of course. No one really knows how they are feeling; we can hope and speculate and wish, and then help them if we can, but we don't know - we're garbage!
