No surprise there. Chirac took Hussein around France as his "friend" back in the 70's and treated him like royalty. He even showed him the top secret nuclear facilities. I'm sure France will send a team of Johnny Cock-rains to help their their billionaire friend.
Thanks Katylina, Monsterone, you make the shittiest sigs.

i'm too lazy, but someone has to post the picture of rumsfeld smiling and shaking hands with hussein.
and all this lawyer has done is allow hussein to be legally prosecuted. if no one wanted to be a defense lawer, or if certain people were denied the right to a defense lawyer, we would never be able to convict someone like hussein.

I plan to do defense work once I pass the bar.
I just don't plan to spend my time defending mass murderers.

I'm glad to see you've mastered the concept of innocent until
proven guilty. Okay, Hussein might be a bit outside the norm,
but still when do you decide a person is worthy of innocence
until proven guilty and has the right to a trial versus the person
has no right to a trial? Isn't it easier (and better) to treat all
alike and trust that judicial system will take care of those like
hussein?

you do know someone is gonna wind up having to defend him, right? If it wasn't this guy it'd be another. And if he was Jewish, and I started hating on Jews, it'd be anti-Semitic, right? Yeah there doesn't really seem to be a difference between the two cases. It's amazing that anyone can somehow justify being anti-French and yet find anti-Semtism and racism wrong.

The guy IS a lawyer. He's slimey. He has some points, ridiculous ones, but points that are technically legit. And his opinions should've been obvious. Anyone who rushes to defend Saddam Hussein obvioulsy feels that he can put together some kind of case. I'd be more surprised if he rushed to his defense and loved Bush. (but of course he's French, so he's probably GEYYYYY!!!!!!!!1111 teehee)

how do you defend rape rooms, torture chambers, mass graves, and even punishment for not winning a tennis match. That'll be interesting.

Everyone in this country has the right to a fair trial if they're being charged for a criminal action, and they have a right to counsel.
However, for those lawyers who are in the private practice, which I intend to do, there is almost always a choice in which kind of clients you take. And everyone has a line. I don't ever want to defend mass murderers, or rapists, or sick fucks who've done shit to kids.
Oops - ALLEGED mass murderers, rapists, or sick kid-touchers.
But there are always lawyers who WILL represent such individuals. I just like to look down my nose at them.

He believed in "innocent until proved guilty"
OK, what we have here is the iconography of a myth. No one is "innocent" until proven guilty. Neither are they guilty. What seems missing is the key word *presumed* and this is what makes the world of difference, IMHO.
When you have, say; a guy standing over a body that he just shot while a crowd watched and three people were videotaping; this person is not innocent under any real definition of the word.
However, because the Constitution [in theory] guarantees Due Process and the right to a Trial etc... said person is afforded certain rights. They certainly do not enjoy *all* the rights of the innocent. If a person was indeed innocent until proven guilty; they could not be held. So we work under the aegis, the presumption of innocence while the process does its thing.

Has jurisdiction been established?
Who will try him? Iraq? The Hauge? The USA?
I believe also, that Saddam Hussein is a POW. If so, I'm pretty sure he is *assured* of council, at least if the US says forget the rest of the world we're trying him under US Law.
Of course, well, my opinion, The Iraqis Must Try him.
Again, not sure who is claiming this one, this case, this trial. And if you think this gets easy, remember the DC Sniper? I think two different states, PLUS Wash DC, I believe were Steeping over each other to get the Jurisdiction to Try him. I guess the lure of Fame and fortune is not lost on Law Enforcement, and often, for good reason.

what does that have to do with him not being surprised the lawyer is french? you're not making any sense.
France has been greatly criticized for "siding" with Hussein which isn't true. It is ignorant to say "no suprise the lawyer if French.." So what? The lawyer could be from any country. So why single out France because it didn't support the war?--Just like many other countries. The US invaded regardless, because it was in her power to do so. As it is in the power of other nations to disagree with that invasion.

Yes. The US can fight its own wars.
has nothing to do with his statement of not being surprised or answer his question.
that's all i'm saying.
And Mike, I thought it was established that Iraq was going to try Hussein. I remember reading that somewhere. Ofcourse I can't find it now that i'm looking for it.

Jeez Mike, OK. He believed in the Prosecution having the burden of proof, and until such proof is established beyond a reasonable doubt, the defendant is entitled to all due rights and safeguards under the law.
Better?

I actually fear the coming of this trial. You know they're going to hype this more than the OJ trial. It's Court TV meets Nuremberg.
It'll take months and clog up the news, and our collective consciousness.
