A lot of times I'll see on job descriptions on Monster.com or HotJobs, etc there will be a listing that says...

Must be familiar with AS/400

What is AS400? Is it like a mainframe application for data entry? That's what I'm guessing, but I never know what to say with regards to that. As work we have a mainframe program called Extra that we use for data entry of information and some messaging, so I'm wondering if this is the same thing.

It's a type of network server (I think). unless you're an IT guy, you don't have to really be familiar with it, but you might have to know how to use Linix, Unix, Windows, etc.

It's a server. There's no way you know it unless you've already worked in an industry that uses them. It's not like they teach that one in schools.

Upon looking at some of the pictures and some sites on them I think I've briefly worked with them, but not extensively. Plus they're never referred to as AS/400, but rather "...that server thing over there...". I do a lot of IT work every day so it struck me odd that I wouldn't know what that was.
