According to Kerry this is because of Bush. In a related statement, Kerry is trying to get inquiries started as to Bush's involvement in the Lindberg baby kidnapping and to where he was when Jimmy Hoffa disappeared.

I was listening to Bob Grant the other day; he was ranting about the gas prices. A caller called in a pointed out how they pay far more in Europe; Bob's response was that first of all, given the tax structure they don't really pay more (ok, whatever, I don't know so I won't comment). Then he went on to say that it was irrelevant anyhow because 1. Europeans don't drive as much as Americans and 2. Americans drive bigger cars so we NEED the gas to be cheap.

If I would have known how much expensive gas would be,
I would have never bought my SUV.
April's Fool.
So how come they don't have Self Serve in NJ???
And if they got rid of Self-Serve in the U.S., would there be a slight increase in the amount of Jobs in the U.S.?

That's true-- milk, orange juice, liquor, all more expensive.

Gasoline is about the least expensive liquid a person will pay for. Think.
but it's also one of the least competitively priced. The consumer typically has a wider selection of liquids from which to choose, whether it be orange juice (minute maid vs. tropica vs. brand X) or wine (sutter home vs. TJ Swan vs. La Mondotte).
The widest variance between gas stations within a 5 mile radius is typically a matter of 3 or 4 pennies. There are no manufacturer's coupons, there are no buy one get one's. There isn't even really a choice when it comes to quality as most newer cars are very specific when it comes to the grade of gas the car is built for.
The price of gas is the price of doing business if you want to reasonably get to work and the oil companies know it. Skip the sunny D for a week and you have some upset kids at home. Skip gas for a week and you have some upset employers and creditors.
Edit: added descriptions for clarification

The other day I saw Dennis Miller talking about this topic and he said something to the effect of "If someone told you that you can take a 2000 lb object, get in it and go 30 miles for $2 you'd do it.". While I agree that the prices are higher and I'd like for them to be lower, it's not really a big deal for to pay that much to get to where you want.

It's along the lines of people complaining about raising stamp prices.

I wouldn't complain about the Post Office raising stamp prices if they also worked on raising the quality and reliability of their service.

But from everything I read, the Post Office turns a large profit. Why would they need to raise stamp prices?

No one ever did find out where Barney worked.
A 16 oz. bottle of Evian goes for a $1.25 at a deli. Even if gas was $3.00 a gallon, it'd be cheap. Most cars get 30 miles per gallon. How much does a cab ride cost if you go 30 miles? I pay $165 a month for a monthly train ticket and have to stand the whole time, and go maybe 20 miles each way twice a day for 5 days a week. 200 miles a week x 4 weeks = 800 miles a month. A cars tank holds 25 gallons say? Costs me maybe $35 to fill up, and if the car gets 30 miles per gallon....
Someone want to run my numbers for me? How much does it cost to go the distance that a tank will allow me to travel? What is the cost per mile? How does that compare to train travel? What is the cheaper mode of transportation?
