This will be real funny if it's a April Fool's joke, but here's the headline from FMQB (http://www.fmqb.com/Article.asp?id=22148)
April Fool? Infinity Pulls Stern
Is it an April Fool's Day joke? Following yet another letter from yesterday Kansas Senator Sam Brownback to Viacom COO Mel Karmazin, The Howard Stern Show signed on this morning with an announcement from WXRK/New York GM Tom Chiusano:
"Ladies and gentlemen, I think you all know me, this is Tom Chiusano and I have to unfortunately read you the following announcement. Due to the recent actions by the United States government and the Federal Communications Commission, The Howard Stern Show is no longer on our air. Neither Infinity Broadcasting or our parent company are willing to put our licenses or our stockholders trust in jeopardy. Viacom can no longer bear the weight of the government pressures and its effect on our corporation. Please continue to listen to this station and other affiliates, as we appreciate your loyalty and understand your needs. While we are sorry to end The Howard Stern Show, we promise quality programming in the future."
In place of the Stern Show today are Cross & Lopez - WXRK OM Robert Cross and Lynda Lopez - a feel good show that promises "fun without the filth" playing tunes from the likes of Beyonce and John Mayer that is the antithesis of Stern and his crew.

I actually enjoyed the music more then I enjoyed Howard.
Too bad 92.3 in NYC didnt take out their "Home of Howard Stern" RDS Info and 94.1 in Philly left on the Howard Stern bumpers..

Well, how different would it be if they really did take Howard off the air? They wouldn't mention him so much (the main clue that it was fake, aside from today's date of course)
Great prank, and a good message to people.

I tuned in to Stern this morning just after the gag, but I did get to hear Tom's message from the top of the show.
And Channel 11 news here in NY did report that Howard was off the air.

It's April 1st. The fact that people fell for this boggles the mind.

I don't get how anyone fell for it.
When a DJ gets fired, generally, he is never spoken of again. All those two did was repeat Howard's name over and over and over.
Plus their bits should have been a dead giveaway.
"Guess the movie laugh!!!!!!!!" It was scooby-fucking-doo. Cartoon Network wouldnt run that bit.

when i first turned on the show, at a little before 7, i figured it must be some kind of gag. now, had i realized that it was april 1st, i would have known that it was, but who knows what the date is ever? anyway, as it went on and on, i started thinking that maybe it was legit. it seemed a long time to be going on and on with a gag like that.
when the new morning show hosts started talking about jay leno, and how he has "his finger on the pulse" and whatnot, i knew it was a joke. i dug it.

say what you will, it was a pretty good one. I have never seen so many people go insane and start to jump off the ledge. I found it funny.

could someone fill me in on why O&A would be fired for that Boston Prank? It seems to me that it's the kind of thing one would expect on April 1st.
I don't think Stern's prank was supposed to be funny, he used April Fools day to make his point, didn't work very well as real listeners called in requesting lame music.

and there were a lot of people who, after, said that the prank made them realize what could happen, and that they were going to start taking action - writing letters, voting for kerry, etc.

As Arienette said, they only let through the few positive callers.
And O&A were booted for reporting the mayor dead because he was in a car or airplane at the time (I forget which), so no one could get in touch with him. Certain people (family and staff) started to become panicked and it snowballed from there.
