This is a question for parents, teachers, or any other person exposed to the pop culture of elementary aged children (grades k-5).

I have been working with children who are autistic for the past 3 1/2 years. Since I work in a private school with 26 autistic children in it, I am not exposed to the typical population of children.

My question is about the popular interests of children right now in 2004. In particular, the interests of third grade boys. I need to know what is popular in the following categories:
* music
* sports (sport heroes etc.)
* books
* magazines (this is an important one)
* clothing
* cartoons

I am collecting this information for one of my programs that I am running during community outings. Our children are very sheltered, in that, they are not exposed to their peers, so they have little to no interests in common. A goal as a special educator is to increase social awareness and to encourage and teach socialization skills.

We take my class to Friendly's every Friday afternoon to teach the children how to act appropriately when going out to restaurants. We usually bring ABC books and stimmy toys for the children to play with, and I realized that this, in itself, may keep them busy, but it is not age appropriate. My students cannot read, but they can match pictures and look at them. My goal is to make a magazine of sorts for my students to look at during times when they have to wait, but KI need to know what is acceptable at this current time.

If anyone can help with this project, it would be greatly appreciated.

How old is 3rd grade? 9 & 10?

Here are some things off the top of my head:

* Yu-Go-Eee! cards, or whatever they are
* Spongebob Square Pants (HUGE!)
* Spiderman
* "Rap" music
* Pizza
* Ice Cream
* McDonalds
* Legos
* Dinosaurs
* Turtles
* Video games

Sorry about not being too specific on some of those no-brainers. I'm actually doing some research myself and all of these seemed common. Don't know any magazines out there.

Are you in NY or NJ? I have a good friend who has a 10/11 year old autistic little boy; they live in Jackson, NJ.

Not necessarily true. We started reading to the kids early, and sometimes there is nothing like a good book before bed.
Now the 6 year old is reading to the 2 year old.

My next-door neighbors, both teach Special Ed in the NYC school system. If I can get a hold of them.(which is tough because they are in bed by 9)
I will ask for some pointers. Or get their e-mail to you, and you can discuss freely.

I can tell you what to stay away from. Cooties. They are terrified of the cooties.

I'm only guessing, but the kids I've seen are interested in either bikes, skateboarding, or basketball. Clothing, the mostly like ghetto stuff (horrible). TV, i guess Yu-Gi-Oh, but at the moment I don't think its as hot a fad as it was a few months ago. There could be something else, but I dunno. Haven't watched Saturday morning cartoons in years.

OK this may sound stupid, but when you say turtles, do you mean the animal or is it some sort of cartoon?

I am compiling a list of what you guys wrote, printing it out, and making my very own magazine matching book for the kids. You are all awesome! Keem them coming!

Pet turtles. For some reason 3rd graders always end up getting pet turtles.

I remember many days early in my teaching, when I was having a bad day, bad mood; whatever, thinking this is too hard, too challenging, I stink, whatever...

And then I walk in one of the Spec Ed rooms where the coolest teachers [theyre always the spec ed ones, ever notice?] always were. And my problems would vanish. It's really difficult to be pissed off because you forgot to tape the Sopranos after you hang out and play with an autistic person for a few minutes. This I miss terribly.

Kat; I don't know where I ever got the energy.

You're kicking ass. Express elevator to heaven, and moutains of good Karma come to teachers like you. I couldn't teach those classes in a zillion years; I don't approach the skills needed, not even close.

Edit: Oh and Curt, Jackson is about 20 mins west of me. That road I-195 that runs east-west basically ends where I live, just before a person would hit Belmar.

This Board should have a Great Adventure Day. Get all your asses up or down to Jackson. That could be a blast.

You guys are awesome. This is the matching/magazine that I have made for my 8 year old student:

*dinosaurs
*popular music
*spiderman
*sponge bob
* turtles
* Pokemon
* Jimmy Neutron & Fairly Odd Parents
* Looney Toons
* sports heroes (gretsky, arod, jeter)
* WWE

I am also going to look at the library for the Nickelodeon & Sports Illustrated for Kids so I can photo copy them for my kiddies!

Thanks to all of you who had such great ideas.
