I had heard of the Zodiac Killer but was unaware he was never caught.

The killings, the taunts and the fear is right out of a mystery movie.

But this one - maybe he gets away?

Thats sort of true, but thats because, after years in jail and near death, Albert Desalvo recanted his confession, and made enough sense to convince authorities and what was the last victim's family, to do a DNA test on his remains to try to match up the DNA material from the last victim of the Strangler.
The current look for the killing is mostly due to sloppy detective work at the time and the new technology that might clear his name.
As for the CA Zodiac Killer, as far as i know, its widely believed that the person behind the killings very well have gone to jail when it stopped and died there. i've never heard of any thought that he may still be alive.
As for the identity of the Zodiac Killer, i had read or saw a couple of years ago that someone had written an indepth book pointing out the the different evidence that the author's father may have actually been the CA Zodiac.

One more thing. Sorry to go a little off topic here, but i read recently that an old serial killer that had stopped and everyone assumed had died, has begun again. Theres been letters coming in again from him and i think there may have been some telephone conversations. The police really think that its not a hoax and that the real killer has surfaced again somehow.
He was called the BTK killer. From the Internet Crime Archives:

The CA Zodiac and the NY Zodiac are 2 wholly different people. The NY Zodiac stalked during the early 90's and was caught in 1996. The NY Zodiac was found to be 30 something year old,Heriberto Seda. (http://www.mayhem.net/Crime/serial4.html#seda)

Here's the deal.

Zodiac was Arthur Leigh Allen. Because they don't have the forensic typing they do nowadays, any materials they have from the case are purely circumstancial and wouldn't stand up in court.

Zodiac was very full of himself and cryptic. BTK, on the other hand, was a monster like I've never seen before. Zodiac like terrorizing people with vague threats.

BTK broke into a woman's house, waited for her, and got pissed off and left when she didn't show up. He later wrote her a letter with a piece of her own lingerie in it, saying - "You're lucky you weren't here. I was.

The only reason i mentioned it was because i had read an article somewhere about how the police are getting letters and phone calls claiming to be the BTK Killer after a 25 year hiatus. There may have been 1 or 2 new killings also, that are making the police hard-pressed to dismiss the new contact as being a hoax.

Those letters have been confirmed to be from the BTK serial killer.

For 20 years he lay silent, now he's back. Is it only a matter of time before he kills again? Or is he just having some fun, possibly in his old age?

I've read three books on this case...and I'm trying to write a screenplay on it. The best book and my friend's term paper that I helped write are attached. He taunted the police and made newspapers put his letters on the front page. The detectives are convinced it was a guy called Robert Starr (fake name)..he was a sexist sadist who was a hermit that lived in the area, which was outside San Fran. He lived with his mother and was "Crazy" supposedly. He went to jail for kid touching in the 70s and it was the only time from the beginning in like 1968 until 1978 that he didn't write letters to anyone..

There were at least two copy cats, one was in Japan in the late 80s and the other was in NY in the 90s...i don't think either one was caught either...but it couldn't have been the same guy. The book is really really good if you want to check it out it will scare the shit out of you and make sure you lock the door.

"The identity of the Zodiac Killer is Jack Tarrance. He's my stepfather," said Dennis Kaufman.

Just recently, Kaufman remembered his stepfather asking him several times about an old PA system, which led him to take it apart.

"When I first opened it up that did affect me. My heart skipped a couple of beats when I saw it," he said.

The material folded and tucked inside, Kaufman believes, may unmask the zodiac killer.

"It was a black hood with a zodiac on it," Kaufman said.

It's similar to the hood worn during the vicious 1968 Lake Berryessa attack, which could be key evidence connecting his stepfather to the killings. He also believes there are dozens of additional victims which were never linked to the Zodiac, including Kaufman's own mother, who he claims was suffocated.

"She sat there and told me Jack was trying to kill her and I didn't listen. I can only imagine how she felt. Imagine how scary that would be. That is what kept me going this whole time," he said.

The FBI confirmed they are running DNA tests on items that Kaufman gave them.

I read a lot of the Fark thread on this. Apparently the area code for that virgin islands connection didn't even exist when Zodiac was doing his killings, it came about more recently like the 90s.

Also a lot of people were laughing at something where he says if the code started to not work, he would just change it...

shrug...
