I finally got around to picking up a TiVo, and so far I'm loving it. I've been thinking about hacking it to add a second hard drive. I've been doing a little research on it, and the upside is that looks like it's relatively easy to do. The downside is that although TiVo doesn't seem to have a problem with this practice, opening up the TiVo will void the warranty.

Has anyone had any experience hacking their TiVo? Any stories, advice, warnings, etc.?

Tivo is the greatest invention in the history of television. OK, that may be a little over the top but I couldn't live without my Tivo. It is great for many reasons, the ability to load it with kid shows so you dont have to find videos all the time, you can rewind live TV plus a million other things.

IM me if you have questions Mikey.

i don't know how to hack it. i can't even make a sig, but i do have TiVo and just wanted to mention how much i like mine. my wife gets first choice of the TV most nights so i used to miss a bunch of my shows. but now i at least get to see them at other times. plus i love the auto recording of shows no matter when its on. and i get to do all of this without having to buy a bunch of video tapes.

I have hacked 2 TiVo's for friends. one, we added a 250GB western digital hard drive. Another one we added a NIC card so the movies could be streamed over the network and burned to a cd or watched at the computer. This also allowed for backup's of the hard drive in case of failure.

Tips. I know this sounds obvious, but unlplug it first. I have heard of people frying their TiVo from not unplugging it. Also do not touch the power supply because the capicitors will still be charged.

Torx #10 screwdriver needed to open the TiVo.

depending on the model you have, you may have 2 hard drives inside. If so, make you sure remove the slave drive when adding the new, larger hard drive.

If I think of anything else i will post. it is a very fun project and cool when you can record like 400 shows at one time.

BTW, i do not have a tivo, though i am thinking about getting one. I may get satellite radio though, which would use up my TiVo money. unless we think we may get O&A from another source under ground.

Thanks to Monsterone for my first sig.

A TiVo doesn't replace your cable provider's box right? Someone tried to tell me it does today. I'll still need a cable box correct?

It does replace your cable providers box, but they need to come and give you a cable card for the Tivo.

To be honest, I like using COmcast's DVR much better than my old Tivo box. cheaper to use too. Less wires and fuckups to worry about.

Every comcast DVR i have used has been fucking terrible. it would stick every once in a while and just record something for 12 hours, would just not record shows or would just constantly record repeats. i fucking hate it. My series 3 is amazing.

Here's another exotic new device used to watch shows at a time other than when they originally aired you can check out too:
