I was at the game last night... kicked some ass. I'm sure they'll build on it just enough to get my hopes up and then crush me with a 5 game losing streak. Welcome to the '04 Mets. The cockteases of Major League Baseball.

It was a good win for the Mets. Any game you get 14 hits is a good game. However this had nothing to do with Don Baylor becoming the new hitting coach like all the commentators were pointing out! First of all, I doubt he had any time to coach them, and second they were facing an awful pitching staff...
I would like to see Reyes back though. Hes fast, great defensively, and who know, maybe this time hes gonna actually hit.

explain to me what is good about him being back.. i love the mets and all but this kid such a disappointment... constantly hurt.. it's not like it is a different injury everytime and you could just say he is unlucky.... it is the same fucking thing everytime.... just trade him for beltran... wiggington is doing just fine at second base...(i am kidding about wiggie at second..
Yeah he's been hurt, but when he is healthy he is terrific. Wiggington may be the one getting traded. Once Reyes is back, Wiggington is going to go back to third. But David Wright had another big game in AAA last night, 2-4 2 RBI 3 runs, so if he keeps it up he's going to be playing third.

I dont like Hidalgo but hes a pretty decent player, an upgrade from what we have out there now, and all we gave up was Weathers whos sucked this season...course this means that now they wont go after Beltran but its not like they were gonna get him anyway...

He is better then Garcia/Spencer. He's a decent outfielder with a good arm. He had 22 assists last year.

I guess we'll see what happens. I was really hoping that Spencer would get back some of his Yankee mojo, but no such luck. And even though I never liked Karim, he hasn't been all that bad.
Hopefully Hildalgo will help. :quest:

Good game for the Mets tonight, despite Looper gettin roughed up a little in that last inning. Camerons been showing some signs of life so hopefully he'll be back to hitting 240 and striking out twice a game in no time. BTW, Duquette said Reyes isnt ready to come back tommorow night against Detroit but a return is still possible over this weekend.

Mets 2-1 when I go.

They said reyes should be in sunday's game... but who knows... as for getting hildalgo it is an upgrade if he can get back to last seasons form.... as for beltran... KC wants too much for him especailly being he is a free agent.. there is not gaurentee that he will be with same team next season.. .to give up the farm and then lose him in free agency is stupid... you never know who a guy might be talking too... look at what happened with Vladie.... no one knew the Angels were even in the picture....

Zeile is going to sit. Even though he had those two big games, Wiggington has better numbers then him in almost every category and has been hitting well as of late. It doesn't really matter. Wright is going to be at third base soon anyway.

Im worried that when Reyes comes back and they sit Zeile that Howe might play Piazza at catcher more often so that Zeile would get more playing time...

Awesome fuckin win. Just like Zeile a few weeks ago, Mike Cameron has been coming through HUGE in the clutch these last 3 games. Good to see Reyes back, just missed a home run there in the end but still managed to get a triple out of it. I was really worried with Leiters awful 1st inning, especially since he threw almost 30 pitches in that inning alone, but he did a good job the rest of the way and Franco had a good 2 innings before the put in Looper.

Franco had a good 2 innings
he constantly gives up at least 1 run. i'm still a little annoyed at that game last week when we could have tied it if he hadn't given up any runs in relief. and it looked like he didnt want to walk the bases loaded last night, that could have really hurt us.

by the way, good to see cameron coming around and reyes back. 2 games in and hidalgo kinda looks like a bust to me. exciting win. i'd still like to get kris benson in here and wright up here around the all star break. this is such a weak division it can be had. we just have to stop getting at or 1 game above .500 and then dropping 3 or 4.

Its not like the man was tearing it up when he was in Houston. He was sucking really bad for the Astros, in fact he hasnt hit a home run since April 13. The Mets didnt trade for him because of how good he is, but rather how good he could be. Hes had years with great stats, including last year, and theyre hoping that at some point in the season he could hit like they know he can. And if he is a bust, hey you only gave up Weathers and Griffiths for him, and if you let him go after this season youre only wasting an extra 3 million. BTW, if the Mets dont let him go, Hidalgo is supposed to make 15 million next year.

Awesome win. Great to see Hidalgo produce in the form of a homer. Good to see Piazza blast his 15th of the season. Good to see Trachsel have a great start in which he only allowed 1 run and 4 hits in 6 innings of work. Good to see Stanton have 2 solid innings in relief in which he just allowed 1 hit. And most importantly good to see them go 5-1 on the homestand so far and get back to .500. Got a tough 3 game series coming up against the Reds, and of course the subway series over the weekend. Should be a hell of a week.

The Reds havent been too good lately, I think if the Mets keep playing like they have, the have a real cahnce to win both series.
Unless the Yanks pitching staff really craps out like we know it can, I dont see the Mets winning more than 1 of the 6 games, if they even win one.
The Phillies and the Marlins could go either way. The Phillies have just been looking for that streak to come so they can get hot and finally take the division, hopefully that streak never comes. And theyll probably lose both series to the Marlins...
I think theyll be able to stay at .500 or at least in the general vicinity and not fall too far down this next month or so. Ive been liking what weve been seeing in these last 6 games and if Reyes can stay healthy, Hidalgo can be at least half as good as he used to, and the pitching staff stays hot, we can stay in contention...at least for awhile...

Isn't that the truth and isn't THAT the truth.
Me personally, I am quite scared of the Mets and I don't even want to think about the marlins. You are right, we have been looking for that streak to come. With our inconsistencies though and the LACK of a trade or call up from the minors, we are just going to tread water and the divison is the Mets for the taking. Especially how they have been playing.
I feel for the Met fans quite a bit because especially having to deal witht he crosstown ego and elite, you guys have been in the same boat as we in Philly for years. Just never seeming to get over that hump. Well, except for 86.
Should be interesting going into July and August. At least you guys did the right thing and went and got Hidalgo. Until we get at least one more starter (Padilla looks to be out for another month and Millwood is TERRIBLE {he loses concentration when food ads are up behind the plate}) and we desperately need a centerfielder. Our GM says though that deals are only done in panic mode. Bulshit. He also says that we are maxxed out at salary. Bullshit! Don't we have a new stadium that is pulling in 43,000 a night! Goodness! Get somne players already.
Sorry for the tyrade, I'll go back in my hole.

PS - Wrestler Chris Jericho is also expected to be in studio soon. So it'll be a night of pro athletes and a fat guy headbanging to 80's rock. It's a good time.

Back to baseball, is there going to be a crosstown day-night doubleheader this year now that tonights game was rained out? I thought that was really cool and truly unique last year.

I am a little bit scared of what is to come this week with the Mets top 3 pitchers facing our two duds, Wolf and Myers. Should be a really exciting series though cause the Phils offense has been doing quite well. I just can't shake the fact that the Mets do scare me a little bit. Looks like a Philly/NY pennant race downt he stretch. I am pulling for my Phils obviously but good luck to you long suffering Mets fans as well.

Ok, I meant our two duds meaning Paul Abbott and Kevin Millwood. Wolfie and Myers are out two bright spots. Why we have not brought up Gavin Floyd yet is beyond me. Why we have not put Ryan Howard out there as trade bait is beyond me also. We will go to another July 31st making such landmark trades as aquiring Mike Williams and Kelly Stinnett. It just feels hopeless around here cause they are making hand over fist with the new ballpark revenue and still we are "over budget". GACK!
Sorry to derail this a bit with Phillies talk but there is no way a Phillies thread would go over on this board since it is New York based. I was hoping for at least a "Mets/Yankees Rivals" or "The Rest of the MLB" thread to have those discussions on.

We can start an Expos thread when they finally move to DC...
Look at it this way, it doesnt look to good for the Phillies vs. Glavine and Leiter. However then you got Trachsel who sucks on the road and Ginter with whom you dont know what youre going to get. It'll be a good series with all the great offense both teams have been producing as of late, plus at this point the Mets need this series to get closer to the Phils whereas the Phillies need this series to pull away from both the Mets and Marlins who are both 2 games behind...

I don't know why we keep hearing so much about Kris Benson...I know he's available on a losing team but I just don't trust him. The guy I want is Jason Johnson from the Tigers....He has been lights out lately and he's young. I was hoping they'd go on a big losing streak so they'd feel like they were out of it.

Zito for Reyes is a huge risk, for both teams. Zito has had an off season, but with his talent you know he will eventually snap back. I'm not ready to give up on Reyes yet. The kid is so talented. you have to let him try and work through his injuries.

Oakland doesn't need Reyes, we've got Bobby Crosby and Marco Scutaro (former met) is a good enough replacement until Mark Ellis returns next season. Zito's a second half pitcher, though I doubt he'll be wearing an A's uniform for much longer. No one's getting traded.

a) Mike Cameron and Wigginton have been really hot lately...they both went deep again today.
b) fuck Kris benson, no way I want him on this team
c) Mets signed this guy in hopes of solidifying their rotation:
Rotation now
turns to defector
BY ADAM RUBIN
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER
PHILADELPHIA - The Mets, searching for a pitcher to upgrade the rotation, may have found the answer without giving up prospects. Cuban defector Alain Soler has agreed to a $3 million deal with the Mets, the Daily News has learned.
The 6-3, 230-pound Soler reportedly fled Cuba by boat in November with three other players and established residency in the Dominican Republic. The package, which includes a signing bonus and multiyear contract, will be announced after Soler passes a physical, according to multiple sources.
Most Mets officials have never seen Soler pitch, but the belief is that the righthander, who throws in the low-90s and is purported to be 24 years old, could be in the rotation after several minor-league starts. He is tentatively scheduled to begin his U.S. professional career in Port St. Lucie, with a potentially quick ascent through the system, though the Mets must obtain a special visa for him to enter the country, which may take a few weeks.
Soler's addition, and the likely promotion of Scott Erickson from Triple-A Norfolk after the All-Star break, could solidify a rotation that includes shaky back-end starters Matt Ginter (1-2, 4.74ERA) and Jae Seo (4-5, 4.79). The trade market for starting pitchers has been extremely thin, and the sellers - primarily the Pirates, who have Kris Benson - have been asking for premier prospects like David Wright for rental pitchers.
"The teams that are selling are holding out for your first-born. I'd give up the second, but not the first," GM Jim Duquette had quipped on Tuesday.
Soler has undergone two major shoulder operations, but scouts say he has recovered strongly. Still, there was limited competition for his services. The Reds, Cubs and Devil Rays also were believed to have been pursuing Soler.
He defected with Cuban closer Roberto Sotolongo, infielder Walter Frias and pitcher Reine Paez shortly after Thanksgiving.
The Mets have been leery of signing Cuban defectors since their last experience, with first baseman Jorge Toca - a minor-league bust after signing for between $1.5 million and $2 million in 1998. One major-league official speculated that interest in Soler was limited because of the recent struggles of Jose Contreras.
Soler pitched for Cuba's 2002 World University Baseball Championships team in Sicily, and beat Taiwan in a semifinal game, 2-0, with a five-hitter.
"He is someone who can help someone right now," agent Joe Cubas was quoted as saying in April.
Better be good...
BTW, 24 years old, whats that, like 37 in Cuban?

If the Mets need anything its relief help. The bullpen has blown more leads than the starters, even Seo and Ginter. I would hold on to Wiggy for a while, he played great again tonight. The good thing is he is an easy sell to other teams fans right now. How much better would Wright be now anyway? Probably not much. Let the kid play a little longer than give him a chance in Sept. Whatever happened to Royce Ring? Don't the Mets need lefty bullpen help right now?

Give some predictions of what you want/expect to see out of him on a good year? I want average, home runs, rbi(tough if leadoff), SB, Walks, and any other things you feel.
I just don't see him being the cornerstone of a franchise. I mean just look around the league at who are the 'Stars' they aren't usually in a small frame such as his. I love the guy but is he going to be worth THAT much in the longrun?

just finished watching last nights game for the second time. another else see steve bartman block ty wig last night in the 8th inn there
Scott Erickson is pitching for the first time this season for the start a very important series with the Florida Marlins. The Marlins enter this series stumbling after dropping three straight in Pittsburgh. So this series can be a good place to get on a run to gain some ground in the east.
The only side note against tonights game is the mets have had trouble against Dontrelle Willis . Dontrelle has already beaten New York twice this year, and boasts a 5-0 record and 1.05 ERA in five career outings against the Mets.

The Mets just traded Karim Garcia to the O's for Mike Dejean. Good move! We were a little heavy in the outfield and light in the relief department, so this is just what we needed. Even though I don't like Garcia, he did do his job for the team and it was smart to get rid of him now while he still has value.
Granted, Dejean has not got it done for Baltimore, but maybe, like Hidalgo, the change of scenery will do him good. Maybe.

I think its a good move. DeJean is a pretty good pitcher who, just like EVERY other pitcher in Baltimore hasnt done too well. He did good for Milwakee last year and I thinks hes better than the set up guys we have right now...personally I think the real problem with Baltimore is the manager (Mazzilli) and the coaching staff, so having Rick Peterson over here to help him out is great.
Im not very confident with Erickson on the mound, but he might be just what the Mets need, a good 4th or 5th guy to get the job done or at least keep them in ball games. Although I still think that if they get a shot at a good pitcher they gotta grab it. Its a shame theyre not trying to get Randy, but at the same time he might cost them too many prospects, including Kazhmir. I also dont want to trade Kazhmir for Zito. Im iffy about Benson because he's not that big a name and well....even when given the chance, he hasnt really done shit in Pittsburgh, plus they also want too much for him.

windowsill, you gotta give kazmir up for zito, you have to do that in a heartbeat. they're not gonna want a wigginton or some other player, plus chances are they aren't going to want kazmir. oakland probably wants pitching, not high school talent that throws hard, theres a big difference...oh and the game tonight, i've never seen a bigger fucking collection of losers in my entire life. and benitez has now saved 7 games against the mets, just fucking great.

Zito worries me though. Sure he had the Cy Young season a couple of years ago but what has he really done since then?
After going 23-5 with a 2.75 ERA and 182 Ks and allowing 182 hits in 2002, in 2003 he went 14-12 with a 3.30 ERA, 146 Ks, and allowed 186 hits. Now this year, already he's 5-7 with a 4.42 ERA, plus he's already allowed 127 hits and 17 homers. You dont trade your top prospect for a guy whos 5-7 with a 4.42 ERA just because he had a really good season a couple years ago. Theres a reason Billy Beane wants to trade this guy and thats because he knows that stats dont lie. And you said it said it yourself newport, Kazhmir is not a guy Beane would go for anyway, hell he said himself in "Moneyball" that he didnt like Kazhmir much.
As far as tonights game goes, despite the loss I was very happy with Erickson tonight. He could be just another Matt Ginter and have a few great starts and begin to suck ass but my optimistic side still thinks that hes just what the Mets need.

as long as it wasn't lastings milledge or scott kazmir i'm ok with it. ed coleman said on the FAN during spring training that peterson looked great and i would have liked to have seen what he could do but lets face it, pitching prospects for the most part are rarely as good as they promise to be. he was supposedly a trachsel type pitcher, if thats the case, hopefully we won't be missing much. and wigginton, while i like him as a player, he's basically a backup infielder. he's got nowhere to play on our infield and we've already good {sarcasm} super joe mcewing {sarcasm}.
now i would like to see them get rid of cliff floyd for possibly eddie guardado or if there is anyway possible getting barry zito.
oh and it turns out wigginton and peterson will go straight to pittsburgh along with a whitesox prospect who, get this, chicago gave us to help out and ensure the minnesota twins don't get benson. excellent job by jim duquette and chicago's g.m. for putting one of the nicest cockblocks on i've seen in a long time.
i just don't like that he spells his name kris with a k...does he dot the i with a little heart too you think? but all is forgiven since he is banging her...

Don't worry Heilman, a former 1st rd pick and next the Met's next year's 5th starter, is expected to have a much higher ceiling than Peterson will ever attain. Personally I think this could be a good deal if they could sign a contract extension w/ Benson.

Yeah, Ive pretty much changed my mind about the whole thing. I like the deal now after having slept on it. Benson is a solid pitcher who will just solidify this rotation. Peterson...well...w/e...and we all knew Wiggy was gone. And Id really wish that the Mets make at least one more deal to aquire a decent reliever. Sure they got DeJean, but why end there? You still got fuckin Franco, Stanton, and Wheeler in that pen...and whetver happened to Jose Parra? I liked him for like the 4 games that he played...

the Mets are strongly considering the idea of packaging prized prospect Scott Kazmir
So wait, theyd have to give up Kazhmir AND some other player(s)?! Fuck that! The guy has 96 walks for god sakes. His K to BB ratio is almost 1-1, wtf needs that?! He gotta be one of the most overrated pitchers in the league...and you cant even make a case that he plays for a bad team cuz the DRays have been pretty fuckin good this year plus your team isnt responsible for the fuckin 96 walks that youve allowed this year! And now Pittsburgh want Milledge instead of Peterson?! Fuck them too!

Oh, and by the way, theyre willing to trade these top prospects for Zambrano and Benson but they wouldnt trade em for Soriano or Beltran? If youre so eager to trade away your future why not just go after The Big Unit? He'll give them what they really want and thats to win now and worry about later...later. How can they even consider trading Kazhmir, especially for Zambrano? Shit, werent we starting to "rebuild" this season? WTF happened to that?!

New York Mets: The Mets have acquired Pirates' right-hander Kris Benson and minor leaguer Jeff Keppinger in a three-team trade. Pittsburgh gets third baseman Ty Wigginton and right-handed pitching prospect Matt Peterson from the Mets and third baseman Jose Bautista from the Royals. Kansas City gets Mets catching prospect Justin Huber.
Also, the Mets acquired right-hander Victor Zambrano and Triple-A pitcher Batolome Fortunado from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for left-handed pitching prospect Scott Kazmir and Double-A pitcher Jose Diaz.
Holy shit! Someone help me here, because I'm Yankees fan, but haven't Huber, Kazmir, & Peterson been 3 of the 5 (including Wright & Reyes) jewels of the Mets Minor League system that they've been talking about for the past year? Did they really just mortgage all the chips in the system to make a run this year? Anyone think this makes sense?

Now that I've calmed down a little and thought about it I still think we gave up way too much. But what's done is done. Now I like Zambrano and Benson but not for the price. The positives are that if they can get Zambranos control under control I think he can be very good. That's a BIG if though. Benson is what he is. I think they know they can sign him before the end of the season or they wouldn't have traded for him. And it's not like they are 35. Benson is 29 and Zambrano is 28. They also got back a AA second baseman from the pirates that is hitting .338. And I don't have to watch Jae Seo anymore.

Well, by 06 they would need to replace Glavine, Trachsel and Leiter anyway. I think they will sign Benson for 3-4 years and I think they said Zambrano isn't eligible for free agency until after the 06. [edit] And Zambrano, with all his walks, is 3-1 vs. the Yankees this year. So he can win against good teams.

READ THIS ALL PISSED OFF MET FANS:
Today, the two worst deals in Met's recent history were made. It's not even close.
ARE YOU F'ING KIDDING ME? Duquette, I hope Lamar gave you a reach around because he just f'ed you hard.
I thought Kazmir was untouchable? I guess untouchable is a below average major league pitcher who has the control of a old person who needs Depends. Let's trade our best pitching prospect, who has been on fire as of late, for a guy with 20 more walks than ANY OTHER major league pitcher in baseball. What a terrible move. Plus, Zambrano is now arbitration elgible. Are we planning on saving money? No, he'll get at least 4-5 million and not be worth one penny.
Then, let's trade a few more top prospets for a rent-a-player. It's not even a few top prospects, but Wiggie was included. I know Wright is the 3B of the future, but Wiggie is a .280/20Hr guy. Benson is a friggin rental player. I hated the deal when I heard it was Wiggie and Peterson, but let's add Huber too! What a joke. My team is a joke. I want new ownership, yeah right. Steve Phillips might have had a bad tenure, but most of it was bad luck. Find me one person who thought the Mets going into 2001 were going to flop. They had Roberto Alomar (a trade that was PRAISED), Mo Vaughn (a trade that was PRAISED), and Jeromy Burnitz (a signing that was praised). So all three of them didn't pan out. Shit happens. I'd give anything for Phillips to be back in there. This wouldn't have happened on his watch.
The Mets will now be one of the worst teams in baseball for the foreseeable future. Piazza is aging and in the downside of his career. Cliff Floyd is ready to retire. So we have a decent few players in Reyes, Wright, and Matsui. Big deal. Big deal. Is Benson and Zambrano going to lead this team? Hardly. The team is now what they were in 2001. Old and going no where. The farm system is now barren except for Lastings Milledge. But Duquette will probably trade him for some bullpen help. At least with Huber, Kazmir, and Peterson we could hope for the future. Fucking Duquette just gave away the future for some ridiculous hope that this sub .500 team that is 6 games out of the playoffs could what? First, miraculously win the division? Second, Actually win a game in the Wild Card round? Third, get to the World Series? Fourth, win the world series? Come on!! Duquette didn't even address the teams MAIN need for bullpen help. This team sucks

No one thinks Huber is going to be that good. They talked him up big time (like the Yanks have done with Navarro) The Mets think they have a kid in their system who will be a big league catcher but is on the DL. Plus, Wigginton was the throw in on the trade. He is not a .280 20 guy. He got hot for 3 weeks. He'll end up with .250 15 this year. I love Wigginton and the whole run through a wall thing but Matt Peterson got us Benson. Wigginton and Huber got a second baseman hitting .338 in AA. So that's a chip.

Met Management's arguement
1. Kazmir is an unknown and can't be depended on for the future.
2. Zambrano is proven as mlb ready.
3. Zambrano has potential and upside.
4. Zambrano is great value for the future.
5. There's a big if neone wants Kazmir in the offseason since no one likes a highschool pitcher.
6. The pitching coach will resurrect Zambrano's stuff where the entire Tampa Bay coaching staff have been unable to do for years.
7. The beat reporter for the Tampa Bay D-Rays basically was trying to say this to the Met fan over the radio tongue in cheek: "Zambrano is what he is and will be that for years to come a relatively wild sometimes and lights out the other times. When I first heard Kazmir was in trade for Zambrano, I thought Zambrano and who? Who would I compare him to in the future? Uhh Johan Santana. Kazmir is definitely a frontline starter."
How does a tampa bay beat reporter know more about Kazmir than Duquette??? You have to get more than Victor Zambrano for your minor league gem, your LEFTY minor league gem. Kazmir may turn out to be a bust but he was a perceived future stud who also happens to throw LH. Because of this, they have to get more than their new #5 starter. But I think it could turn out to be beneficial if they can solve Zam's control problems. However not as beneficial as if they had landed somebody better...... obviously.

Great job by the Mets tonight on both ends. Cameron went deep for his 22nd. Wright went 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run. And of course Leiter, whos been one of the most consistent pitchers this year, had his best outing tonight. He allowed just 1 run, 5 hits, and struck out 7. Hes got his ERA down to 2.12 now! Next 2 weeks are mostly against NL Central teams so lets see how we fair against them...

Wilpon must sell the team immediately...worst owner? in baseball
I would say youre right. Theres some owners who dont have the money to go after big name free agents and some owners who dont have a great farm system in place. Wilpon on the other hand, has a ton of money but is unwilling to use more than about 90 million and he HAD a superb farm system in place...that is before 2 of their top pitching prospects and their top catching prospect were trade away. So Im going to have to agree with you and say that Wilpon is the worst owner in baseball.
Art Howe must be fired.......could be worse than Kotite was for the Jets
Absolutely. The guy needs to get his priorities in order and he needs to chill with his pitching changes, especially since our bullpen blows.
Stanton and Franco must be gone immediately
I think its ridiculous that Stanton has so many appearances this year, hes had what like 2 good outings this year? Franco is old! He just doesnt have it anymore! This is who you put on your 40 man roster instead of a good pitching prospect that goes by the name of Jason Anderson?
get Reyes to shortsop NOW!
Ditto. Matsui has been awful as a fielder this year. Even beyond the 20 some odd errors that he already has, he just hasnt been making the plays that big league shortstops have to be making. Look at the other SS rookies this year...Bobby Crosby, Khalil Greene, and now BJ Upton...they all make plays on a big league level. Matsui, despite being older and more experienced, has sucked this year.

Earlier this season, I got semi-bashed for saying that we should have gotten Soriano or Vlad or Arod, and now it seems that if we could have traded Reyes or Kazmir, we may be talking about a significant upgrade in offfense and defense in hindsight. Also to think we passed on these studs and NEEDED to trade for Zambrano and Benson baffles me for the "future". The mets had the stuff this year except the defense and offense is SUSPECT. (sorry for caps but I'm trying to get your attention here) I'M IF ZAMBRANO AND BENSON IS YOUR FUTURE, WHY THE HELL IS KAZMIR PROJECTED TO PITCH THIS YEAR IN SEPTEMBER AND NEXT YEAR FOR THE D-RAYS? Please explain why we screwed ourselves up? Don't tell me the D-Rays don't have ne pitching.... in two years we won't have nothing but shambles... bloody shambles... Also the Royals got Huber after pursuing him heavily, and only traded a player they got off the waivers for him... Well, tonight is supposed to be Howe's last game. I have no clue who they are going to get to manage next year. But looking at next year, which, if any, of these guys would you bring back? (Assuming you could trade the one's with contracts)
Franco
Leiter
Glavine
Trachsel
Piazza
Stanton
Floyd
Hidalgo

Art Howe getting fired is sad. It's not his fault. Noone can win with this team they're not good. They're just not good. Mike Piazza can't really play first base. Franco is getting older than hell...Mike Cameron strikes out constantly Cliff Floyd is hurt more often than he's healthy. Looper is a setup man acting like a closer.....God couldn't even win with the mets...and the fact that your ownership sucks and won't admit how much of a disaster this team is won't help much either

Howe did have to got. So do a bunch of other people but Looper's fine. He's got a 2.63 ERA and 24 saves in 29 ops. At least I'll be able to watch David Wright for the whole year in 2005. That kid can hit.

Howe mismanaged players, especially pitcher, all the time. He took out good players i.e. Piazza, when the game was still undecided. He took the starter out of the game, no matter how well he was doing, and put in a shitty reliever like Stanton, or Franco, or DeJean countless times, and in many of those instances it cost them the game. How does need to go, and they need to get a guy whose a bit more of a hardass who can make these guys better, rather than just stand there in the dugout with his chin pointed at the ceiling.

Wow... talk about everyone stopping giving a shit at once...
Anyway, there is good news. The Mets have just hired Omar Minaya as Head of Baseball Operations.
In my humble opinion this is soooo a step in a positive direction. It might be a sign of the Wilpons finally conceding "We don't know what the fuck we're doing, so lets bring in someone who does, and we'll take a step back."
I hope.

Thank god! I was hopin they would have done this last season but they stuck with Duquette. I see this as several thing, a) Wilpons way of blaming his bad decisions on Duquette and b) The Mets getting a terrific GM. I like Minaya a lot, and I know that if MLB was willing to pay, he couldve turned the Expos into a real contender. Shit he turned them into a contender last year w/o the money. Anway, I like Minaya a lot, hes a great guy, great baseball person, and Im sure he'll be great as GM.

Mets have begun interviewing new managers...starting with Tosca (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1892938)
It's probable that Tosca won't be the last to interview, however, and the New York media are helping the Mets in their search. They've tossed the names of Jim Fregosi, Frank Robinson, Bucky Dent, Cito Gaston, Jim Riggleman, Grady Little and Buddy Bell out there in recent days.
Really hope its not going to be Grady Little or Frank Robinson...

At least with Omar here I can stop worrying about them hiring Gary Carter or Lenny Dykstra as a manager. I love those guys but neither has managed a day in their lives. If you want to bring back a fan favorite to manage go get Wally Backman. At least he's managed in the minors for a few years. I heard someone bring up Bob Brenly's name also. He wouldn't be too bad. He did win the World Series a few years ago.

I want Franco gone. He's been a pain in the ass ever since they made Benitez the closer. I also want Leiter, Glavine, Stanton, and Floyd gone too. I'm just tired of all of them. As for Piazza, as much as he's done for the Mets, I think it may be time to part ways. I think it would be best for him and the team if they could get him to the AL. Get rid of Jason Phillips too. If I see him hit into another DP or pop out to the infield I'm going to puke.

Yes, the 4th year is an option year. At the time of the signing, that year was to give him a better chance of reaching #300 and at this point he would have to win 20 games in 1 season and 2 in the other to do so. Its simple, if he pitches as well as he did this year, he stays. If he doesnt...well he probably stays anyway...

Heres something Peter Gammons wrote in one of his articles on espn.com, despite my pure hatred for the man, I thought he was right on with this...
The Mets won't have fun, fun, fun until Daddy takes the Lear Jet away. Omar Minaya is a very good evaluator, but Junior Wilpon made trades and blamed Jim Duquette. Between Junior and their New York PR guy, the Mets provide us all with a ton of laughs. Right now I'd bet on Jose Reyes going to Texas for Alfonso Soriano, to play right, with Omar-favorite Orlando Cabrera signing with them for $32 million and four years.
At this point I wouldnt care if they trade away Reyes for Soriano. The guy almost never plays. And Cabrera is a solid defensive shortstop with a pretty good bat...some pop too.

Mets are really shopping around now, what with the lack of a decent manager being available...
New York Mets: GM Omar Minaya has gotten permission from the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers to speak with Willie Randolph and Terry Collins about the Mets' managerial job, the New York Daily News reported.
The newspaper categorized Randolph, the Yankees' bench coach, as a serious contender. The former player, who spent 90 games with the Mets in 1992, estimated he has interviewed for about a dozen jobs.
Yankees manager Joe Torre said, "I just hope this is more than just, 'We have to interview minorities and stuff and he's right across the river, so let's do it,'" according to the Daily News.
Collins, Los Angeles' field coordinator, had a 463-444 record in three-year stints with the Astros (1994-96) and Angels (1997-99). He has spent the past three seasons helping coordinate the minor leagues for the Dodgers, according to the newspaper.
The Mets already have interviewed former Toronto Blue Jays manager Carlos Tosca, and they have a meeting set up with Texas Rangers hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo. That meeting will take place Friday, the Daily News reported.
# The Mets are starting their own television network, following the lead of the crosstown Yankees.
The Mets said Tuesday that they have reached an agreement with Time Warner and Comcast for a regional sports station that will start in 2006.
The Mets, who plan to show about 125 regular-season games on the station, paid $54 million in June to end their contract with Cablevision's two regional sports networks -- Madison Square Garden and Fox Sports Net New York -- after the 2005 season.
Hope they dont screw this one up like they did 2 years ago....

Mets made some moves in the coaching department this week. Third base coach Matt Galante wont be back next year, which is a shame. Neither will first base coach Gary Pettis or hitting coach Don Baylor, which too is a shame. Bench coach Bobby Floyd and bullpen coach Nelson Silverio will be reassigned in the organization leaving Rick Peterson as the only remaining coach right now. Mets have also asked the Tigers to interview their bench coach Kirk Gibson.
