Canada Begins World's Largest Seal Hunt

Hunters are allowed to kill 350,000 young seals this year. They'll be 12,000 hunters going up with spears and rifles.

Looks like there is gonna be alot of 'red ice' soon. Sounds like a heck of alot of seals.

I don't know the status of th seal population in Canada and how th gov't determined this year's quota. I'm not against hunting in and of itself, at least not if I think the population is able to either sustain it or requires it because we've fucked up the ecosystem so much (eg overpopulated deer because we've for all intents and purposes wiped out their natural predators etc.). I would never go harp seal hunting though. I mean what is the fun in killing a newborn seal that can't even get away? That's just awful and totally unsporting.

I'm just glad she used "harp" instead of "baby". It takes forever to kill a seal using a baby.

Between the ages of 16 and 23 I would've been laughing my ass off about baby seals getting clubbed to death. I think it's because that's the most selfish phase of a person's life, I don't remember ever caring about anything that didn't affect me directly.

Now that I'm older the thought of doing harm to another living thing for sport or money is very off putting to me. (Of course if I had to do it for survival I would be able to rationalize that action and I understand the whole overpopulating situation and how that is also a bad thing)

Another thing that disturbs me is some people's fascination with death web sites like rotten.com and ogrish.com. I know of people who use the excuse that they look at it to desensitize themselves so if they ever have to see gruesome death in real life it wont bother them. That's exactly the thing that I want bothering me, isn't that the natural reaction?

there was a nytimes article a couple of weeks back about this. apparently these seals are decimating the fish population up there. their pelts are popular in russia and eastern europe.

i believe one thing that adds a 'very cruel' affect to the killing of these seals is the 'scream' of the seal...

a deer 'i believe' is silent as it is shot and as it is dying but a seal will probably 'scream, yelp, or cry out in fear' as it is being chased, shot or stabbed, and as it dies...

it really makes a difference to me

its not the fact they are killing seals, cause i love a good steak as much as the next guy, its the matter in which they go about to slaughter these animals...the savage clubbing and beating with sticks that makes seal hunting vicious...a bullet upside the deers head kills instantly, it takes multiple club bashings to the head to "finish off the animal" by the way does anyone find it hypocritical of our neighbors to the north that they so readily opposed war in iraq but its perfectly ok to club a seal...?

My ass they are. Commercial overfishing is decimating the fish population... of pretty much ALL fish, even the ones that in the past were considered "junk" fish. Becuase you know that nobody except a few scientists would care that they were "decimating the fish population" if somebody wasn't profiting from said fish... If you believe it's due to the seals, well, I've got a bridge to sell ya...
