Insticated and reputiated

Are those words? I figured throw this thing up just to jar reaction on the news Conference. I think this may be the turning point in the Presidency.

Plus just a lame excuse for me to start a newsworthy thread
:p

I do care what has to be said though because I think this is just like the snowball rolling downhill getting bigger and bigger and bigger. I think when the questions hit the shit will begin to hit the fan.

Hindsight is 20/20 but it looks as if we should have never invaded Iraq. we could have increased inspection teams and kept the pressure on that way. so now 'he has no choice' but to try and fight til the end 'whatever that end may be' probably the end of his presidency later this year. if he pulls out now Iraq will fallback into the hands of a leadership that rules with more force and self interest than for the good of all the Iraqi people.

I believe one thing is certain, if democracy prevails it will be another situation like Israel and the Palestinians. There will be endless terrorist attacks.

It's a fucked up situation for the innocent Iraqi people who want to live a peaceful productive life.

One thing i truly do not understand is why the President does not have the Saddam atrocities publicized more. I would think that being it looks so strong that he used weak WMD info to invade Iraq then why wouldn't he try to publicize these atrocities to help add some justification. What about all these mass graves? It makes me start to think that there are 'very little' as compared to as many as there are rumored to be.

I don't exactly hate Bush but he is really on my unfavorable side. Hate is too strong a word to throw around to someone I don't know or respect. I am interested what the acting President of the USA has something to say especially when there is the opportunity for some intriguing questions to be asked. I guess there was not really any prepared questions to the press like I thought before. I am just confused at to what is the deal now with iraq. Sure, you don't want to just leave it, you have to clean up the mess and make good. I just couldn't help but think of all of the shit going on here at home that needs to be taken care of. Isn't there a ridiculous deficit going on right now?

QUESTION: Mr. President, why are you and the vice president insisting on appearing together before the 9-11 commission? And, Mr. President, who will we be handing the Iraqi government over to on June 30th?

BUSH: We'll find that out soon. That's what Mr. Brahimi is doing. He's figuring out the nature of the entity we'll be handing sovereignty over.

And, secondly, because the 9-11 commission wants to ask us questions, that's why we're meeting. And I look forward to meeting with them and answering their questions.

QUESTION: (OFF-MIKE) I was asking why you're appearing together, rather than separately, which was their request.

BUSH: Because it's a good chance for both of us to answer questions that the 9-11 commission is looking forward to asking us. And I'm looking forward to answering them.

And that pretty much sums up how Bush handles most of his questions, by giving answers to completely different queries.

Sidenote: I received a call at 9:10 from the National Symphony wanting to sell me tickets. They asked how I was doing,

I said "Not that well, you are calling me after 9:00 at night"

them: "Well we are a non-profit so we don't have to follow the guidelines that telemarketers do."

me: "I'm not sure it's still the best way to entice folks to buy, but that's your decision. Also were you aware that you are based in Washington, DC and the Presidet is currently addressing the nation."

them: "With all the kids on the street selling drugs and domestic crime, I don't know why anyone would spend their time listening to that man babble . . . "

me: "hold on, are you now demeaning me for listening to the President?"

them: "I'm just saying that I don't understand why anyone would waste time on . . . "

Me: "Hold on, I want to speak to your supevisor. And while you are getting him, think about two things. No matter how a person votes, they need to be aware of who they are voting for or who they are voting against. And second, your job is to sell tickets, I understand that. But to tell someone who they should or should not listen to politically is beyond the scope of what you are getting paid for. If that's what you want to do then I suggest you join a campaign party and quit what you are doing now."

Nothing is more depressing that people who vote a certain way, but don't really know why. There are idiots in both parties. For the most part there have been some good political discussions on this board and they've brought out some interesting points.

Just wanted to say thanks.

Edit: correct two typos.

so what happened to the telemarketer? did you get thm in trouble???

I waited for 5 minutes for a supervisor. In the meantime, the telemarketer kept going on and on about how this was his job, we're on the same side, blah blah blah.

Then there were the asides as the person next to him would say "Are you arguing with the person on the phone?" then the telemarketer would say "no, I'm NOT arguing, then continue his little tirade."

Finally, the supervisor came on the line and I explained the call to him and he apologized, said that the person should NOT have started talking about the President and that he acted in an unprofessional manner. Then he wanted to know if there was a better time for them to talk to me about the great offer they had for the next season.

No, there's not a better time. Not anymore. I went to three performances last season. That money will now be used to purchase Wolfe Trapp or Kennedy Center performances that are not NSO related.

I'm sure nothing happened to the telemarketer (although it sounds like enough people heard his "blathering" on his side of the phone). Was it worth it in the end? I got an apology (albeit a sales tinted one) which is always nice, but ultimately I suspect I might have just been better off hanging up and taking my blood pressure medicine.

I wouldn't be so sure that the person wasn't let go.

About 5 or 6 years ago I needed some extra Christmas money so I decided to work at the Shakespeare Theatre doing telemarketing calls. The benefit were the free tickets to the shows, and (for the most part) you were calling people like yourself with prior relationships with the theatre, so they weren't as hostile as if you were blind calling complete "strangers."

While we never called after 8pm (not sure if that has changed now, btw), we did have to interupt people during dinner.

I lasted about 4 or 5 weeks; they let me go because I sucked at it, and quite honestly I knew it, and really didn't care. I hated it. It was actually a pretty fun work enviroment, a lot better than I imagined, and they people on the other end of the phone were understanding - maybe the worst would be impatient, but I was just lousy. But the bothering people made my skin crawl. Each time the computer dialed someone I prayed for an answering machine message.

Ok...back on topic...

Last night was an embarrassment for this country. I could only think about how Reagan, Bush Sr. and Clinton would have been able to handle those questions, and soothed concerns better. Gore, McCain, Rudy, Rummy, Cheney and Kerry could all have handled themselves better. This is the easy part of the job - talking and answering the questions. Even the tough questions.

President Bush just looked weak. He did not look Presidential.

He could have been contrite without letting himself look soft; he could gotten across his message, and still have time to actually answer the questions poised to him; being President it is his responsibility to take responsibility.

He couldn't tell us who would take control of Iraq. As someone else pointed out, he had the balls to lob up "the race card." He deflected questions about mistakes and apologies. He refused to answer why he and Cheney had to testify together. He repeated the lies that Sadaam was a threat to the United States. He continued the WMD myths and distorted who we are fighting in Iraq by catigorizing them all as terrorists, when (in reality) the insurgency we are seeing now are from Iraqi civilians who do not want to be Occupied, which he candidly admitted - he wouldn't like to be occupied either.

PAH!

I wouldn't be so sure that the person wasn't let go.

All because of Bush. Amazing. :p

One of the best/worst parts of the questioning:

QUESTION: Following on both Judy and John's questions, and it comes out of what you just said in some ways, with public support for your policies in Iraq falling off the way they have, quite significantly over the past couple of months, I guess I'd like to know if you feel, in any way, that you have failed as a communicator on this topic.

BUSH: Gosh, I don't know. I mean ...

QUESTION: Well, you deliver a lot of speeches, and a lot of them contain similar phrases and may vary very little from one to the next. And they often include a pretty upbeat assessment of how things are going, with the exception of tonight. It's pretty somber.

BUSH: A pretty somber assessment today, Don, yes.

QUESTION: But I guess I just wonder if you feel that you have failed in any way. You don't have many of these press conferences where you engage in this kind of exchange. Have you failed in any way to really make the case to the American public?

BUSH: You know, that's, I guess, if you put it into a political context, that's the kind of thing the voters will decide next November. That's what elections are about. They'll take a look at me and my opponent and say, let's see, which one of them can better win the war on terror? Who best can see to it that Iraq emerges a free society?

And, Don, you know, if I tried to fine-tune my messages based upon polls, I think I'd be pretty ineffective. I know I would be disappointed in myself.

I hope today you've got a sense of my conviction about what we're doing. If you don't, maybe I need to learn to communicate better.

I noticed he said several times "If my government (rather than administration) had even an inkling about a terrorist attack, we would have done everything possible to prevent it.

Does anyone really believe that there was no "inkling" whatsoever?

The press conference was a reminder why he doesn't do press conferences: He stinks at them. Stinks on ice. It was a very poor performance, you could hear the man flailing around until he latched onto his talking point.

I listened on the radio, so I didn't get to see the flop sweat the boys mentioned on the fastest hour, but man.

As to why he's going to testify in front of the 9/11 commission with the Veep -- it's so Dicky can hold little Georgie's hand throughout; also so Cheney can kick him under the table if he starts to say something stupid.

Ceci n'est pas une signature.

How about the vacation from the war that he gave Al Qaeda?

By letting them get away, they have had time to:
*replace fallen leaders,
*retrain
*come up with new tactics and strategies
*train recruits
*reestablish communications
*obtain new funding
*escape to other countries in the world.

Bush pulled out the arabic-speaking specops forces who were hunting bin Laden and sent them after Saddam.

THEN Bush eliminated one of bin Laden's enemies for him by taking out Saddam. This furthered Al Qaeda's goal of reestablishing the Caliphate.
This also gave bin Laden just what he wanted-- U.S. forces invading an Arab country so he could show that all we want is their oil and to wipe out their culture, thus recruiting more Arabs to bin Laden's cause.
Another goal that bin Laden wanted was to have U.S. forces over there in the open, on their turf, where they could slowly bleed us and shatter our morale as a country, the way Vietnam did.
THEN Bush gave bin Laden another of his goals in his strategy to reestablish the Caliphate-- he fractured the Western Alliance.

And Monster, have you given any thought as to how they will pay off that deficit?
It will take tax increases, and this time when it comes to paying it off, the rich will pay a smaller share.
