it's Archduke Franz Ferdinand. I'm glad to see that you were paying attention.

And it's still playing out now.

it's Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

And his assasination while an important event, was in no way responsible for the start of a World War, much less two.

It is indeed interesting how events unfold, but study Contingency, the randomness factor in history. There is no way the killing of one human can trigger wars that claim 100 millions lives. Thats a whole different discussion, whole different ball park, different Universe.

In short; whether that happened or not, the WW1+WW2 slaughters would almost surely have proceeded as they had.

You mean that our actions have consequences? Odd.

Ferdinand's assassination wasn't entirely responsible for the first world war, but it certainly provided a spark.

Duke was just kidding around fella's. Weren't you duke?

World War 1 seems to be forgotten a lot of times. A lot of people don't go into it, when inf act it was very important. This was the war that showed new styles of fighting(trench warfare) and new weapons(planes, gas, new guns.) It was mazing how much more technology we had in the military field then during the Civil War.

I don't think WWI gets ignored. we went into it in good detail in HS and spent 2 months on it in college( depending on the courses you take of-course.) think the war that gets ignored is Korea.

At the time of the assassination of the Archduke, all of Europe was a powderkeg. They were trying to keep the balance of power, so that no nation became too strong. All of Europe was involved in alliances which really drew up the battle lines. If one nation in the alliance was attacked, the others in the alliance had to be on their side. Any little thing could have sparked WWI, the assassination was that spark.

The funny thing about that assassination was that the Archduke and his wife happen to make a wrong turn, and ended up being ambushed. Their driver was probably paid off to make that wrong turn, but that's only speculation.

WWII happened because Germany was made to accept a really harsh treaty to end WWI. Germany was held solely responsible for WWI, the reparations they had to pay for the war was about $30 billion.

To Duke, yes it is funny how history plays out. Almost like that is the way it was meant to be.

I can't believe it took 12 posts for this to show up. True, ADF did make reference to a spark in his post, but that wasn't enough.

The funny thing about that assassination was that the Archduke and his wife happen to make a wrong turn, and ended up being ambushed. Their driver was probably paid off to make that wrong turn, but that's only speculation.

It wasn't even really an "ambush."

The ringleader of the GROUP of assassins (The others had already wither wimped out or failed in their attempts) was finishing up a sandwich, saw the car coming down the street, whipped out his pistol and unloaded into the Archduke and his wife.

All because, as you said, a wrong turn.

Then Elton John re-wrote one of his songs for them and performed it at the funeral.

Eerie how history repeats itself.

His death did not trigger war. Dammit, I learned about this last semester and I can't remember the specific country names so I can't explain it all. Anyway, do your research. It was believed that he was allowed to be killed as his body guards did nothing when the bomb actually came in his direction, and he brushed it off. Then, his carriage went into an alley and a gunsman shot him and his wife, which is weird since the guy had so many guards around him yet they did nothing to prevent it. Plus some other stuff that happened afterwards that showed his death was being used as a way to go to war. Man, JUST DO YOU RESEARCH!
