Anyone else check this out?
I'm a big fan of the original show so I was really excited to watch IC America, but came out a little dissapointed. First off it seemed WAY too much like a reality show instead of a cooking show. Bad "tense" music sucked, and the whole place seemed too quiet with just Alton Brown announcing. I like Iron Chef when the tasters talk the whole time too.
The actual show was pretty good, but it was obviously a set up. Theres no way Flay beat Sakai. Hopefully it can reedem itself tomorrow.

I watched it and enjoyed it, but I still liked the dynamic of the japanese version better.
At least it isn't a joke like the Shatner version.

I'm out of town with no access to cable to let me say this -
Bobby Flay apparently beat Sakai?
SAKAI?! The king of Iron Chefs?
Bullshit. I call this rigged. Because Bobby Flay is the most overrated piece of shit chef if not in all of America then at LEAST on Food Network, and there's no way he could legit beat Morimoto, let alone Sakai.

I think it sucked. Bobby Flay sucks. And they need to have the tasters commenting on the food as its bing made, not just that gay ass kid tripping over his lines to Alton. And it would be nice if they at least had gotten someone who knew a very basic amount abut food - "He seems to be using some sort of root... or tuber... I don't know what it is!" Daikon, you dumb fuck. And then the food producer woman who was getting all the food clearly had no fucking clue, either. Morons. And Mark Dacascos sucks. Just awful. I don't know where they got him but it was especially retarded to do the whole my uncle, Chairman Kaga, blah blah told me to build this kitchen stadium blah blah schtick after they just had an hour show on how the Food Network built it.
And no, Alton Brown did not have a heart attack, so he explains on his <a href="http://www.altonbrown.com/pages/rants.html">blog</a>.

IC America really does blow. I like Alton Brown and all, but the three member panel commenting style is a much better format. And I'm sorry Alton, I think you should go back and watch some archive footage if you don't recall an ice cream machine being used on the original show. It's in a large majority of shows. They need to add some more culinary expertise to the panel. When an unusual ingredient makes an appearance, half of the fun is hearing about where it comes from, what it's used for, how it's traditionally prepared or how it's obtained.
The judges were just kissing ass and saying they liked the dishes and not really making strong statements pro or con about how the theme ingredient was worked into the dish.
I feel bad that Sakai had to be the sacrificial lamb on the first show, especially to Flay. Sakai never lost a fish battle. NEVER. And how convenient that his first loss is on IC America. Is this going to go the way of the WWE now?
And what's up with The Chairman? Who are you? Brandon Lee?
I also don't want to take anything away from the IC America chefs themselves. Wolfie, Bobby and Mario are all great in their own right, but the producers completely just picked recognizable chefs so the viewing audience could have some idea who was up there.
Thank God at least Shatner wasn't there.
Now here's what I want to know. Once all the IC America chefs have battled all of the traditional Iron Chefs, are there going to be new battles with new talent? I suppose that all depends on the ratings.

Round 1: Flay (Southwestern style) vs. Sakai (French)
Secret Ingredient: Trout
Best Dish: Trout Ice Cream (Sakai)
Victor: Bobby Flay?
Comments:
That guy that is the "nephew" of the Chairman is an actor I've seen in tons of action films.
Although I dug Flay's uniqueness, it was Sakai all the way! Where is the justice? Sakai doesn't lose fish wars!

Don't get your proverbial panties in a bunch. It's not as if Sakai and the other Iron Chefs haven't been given the home-town call a number of times. I'd say the Iron Chefs lose maybe 25-33% of the time but the judges only give it to the challenger 10% of the time, if that. Maybe it's a cultural thing, or maybe I just like the younger chefs who tend to be a little more innovative and take risks.

This is what I get for listening to Lou.
Lou: "Hey guess what happened to Alton!?"
Lisa: "What!?"
Lou: "He had a heart attack on one of the Iron Chef America shows. If you read his blog he talks about it"
Lisa: "Wow that sucks!"
Now if Lisa only went to his blog to read that it was arrythmia, I could have smacked Lou upside the head.
Thank you for the correction.

The production values on the first episode were very wacky. The sound mix on "The Chairman" was very bad, I could hardly hear what he was saying during his opening monologue, although the bit with him bowing to the pepper and biting the apple was nice.
I think the second episode, where he's a bit understated, is better.
I think if AB's commentary was done 100 percent in post production, it would have come out a lot better. You can so tell how hyper he was in the "live" commentary - the post commentary was so much more "normal" AB. The live commentary sounded like AB snorted about 3 rails of china white.
If you're calling this rigged to Flay, you're right. In the Food Network "pecking order", Flay is probably the #1 guy in the competing Chefs. If Morimoto spoke perfect english and was more marketable, he'd be their #1 guy far and away.
BTW, notice how Emeril is as far away as possible from any sort of Iron Chef competition?
The guy on the floor is a friggin' toolbox. "What's he got in the pan there?" "I DON'T KNOW!" Thanks. Ota wants to kill you now.
FWIW, in "official" Iron Chef canon, The Chairman is dead. He died due to bad fugu. He is replaced in Japan with his nephew, so Food Network is kind of following the canon.
How the hell does martial arts figure into this? I know Dascacos is an accomplished martial artist, but is he gonna kick the ass of the person who loses?

OK, I have some issues now.
- Why the hell is Morimoto speaking in English in the first episode, but subtitled so people can understand the thick accent, but he's dubbed in episode 2 with not even the same voice actor they used in the Japanese series?
They used Sakai's voice actor...
- The Chairman is trying too hard. I don't know if he's improvising or being fed lines, but he's trying too hard.
- Melinda Clarke.
<img src="http://www.justinpitkethly.co.uk/pics/screencloseups/killertongue_4.jpg">
<b>Nice!</b>
- The music is great. I approve of that.
Here are my recommendations if this is successful.
- AB does work in post production.
- "The Chairman" scales back his attempt in trying to use catchphrases.
- Replacing the floor person with someone that had some culinary experience. Hell, Rachael Ray.

The scuttlebutt is that he is such a perfectionist, and needs so much planning time and other things, along with the fact that his ego couldn't deal with a potential loss, that he wanted no part of it.
In other words, Emeril is the Triple H of the food network.

Here are the pros and cons.
- The judges
While having tghe MILF from the OC and Brian Unger might be a little weird to you guys, don't forget, do you really think that all the people in japanese Iron Chef were A-List celebrities? I mean, Performance Artist Kim-Jon... erm, I mean KORN?
- Commentary
Might be budget issues. Might be people who can talk about food might not be TV friendly.
I think if it was a two-man commentary between Alton and the editor from Bon Appetit magazine (the one who looked like Stephanie McMahon) it might work.
- I'm pissed that Morimoto lost, but remember... he's the challenger. Challengers almost never win.

Mario definetly did a better job than Flay and he MIGHT have won legitametly, but its still really sucks that the American chefs are 2 and 0. Mario is definetly a better chef and his dishes might have been better, but I'm not sure if the tasters appreciate Morimoto's Japanese cuisine.
And to answer Newport King's question, I think its going to be a series.

YES.
At last, another person recognizes the horrible speech impediment that Oliver has.
It's not cause he's British. There are plenty of people with British accents, even cockney accents, that are pretty understandable to Yanks like me.
That boy just sounds like he's got a giant retard tongue in his mouth.
Oh, and apparently Mario Batali beat Morimoto? Well.....I think that's kind of bullshit as well, but I'll spare them my anger as unlike Flay, Mario Batali does NOT eat a bowl of dick.

Puck did win, and it was legit - I'm a huge Morimoto mark but Puck wiped the floor with him. Pretty much what happened was, Puck featured the theme ingredient (eggs) as the main attraction, where Morimoto used it as an accessory to his dishes.
Also, Vincent Pastore, "Big Pussy" from the Sopranos, made some quite inflammatory comments to Morimoto about the cuisine prepared.
Note to producers: When your star's specialty is sushi, make sure the people on the tasting panel don't have a fucking issue with eating UNCOOKED FOOD!!

I missed most of the Puck/Morimoto battle becuase I was watching Sopranos. However I caught enough to see that Wolfgang had a legitamite win. Wolfgang seems to be the strongest of the American Iron Chef with Mario right behind and Flay in the shitter.
The tag team battle was cool, but I still think Mario and Sakai should have won. How the hell did Sakai lose plating again? That fat guy had a big time hard on for Sakai. "Bay leaves are dangerous to eat." "I took the liberty to remove it from my mouth after working on it for 5 minutes." What a dick.
And once again Flay shows that he's such a big pussy. What kind of chef cuts himselft twice and gets electocuted. Also, the entire match he was screaming at his assistant "DO IT NOW!".

I agree. Mario is certainly a better chef than Flay. And I think that Morimoto placed himself at a slight disadvantage when the majority of his dishes were either raw or sem-raw. Hard to stack it up against Mario's deeper richer flavors that were built around variations on variations of already popular cuisine.
I didn't get to taste the food, but I thought Flay should have lost.

Hell no, he should have lost. He's a stupid one trick pony, completely unadaptable. Morimoto, Sakai, Batali, Puck, all demonstrated that they can adapt, and try new, adventerous, creative things with their ingredients.
Flay's approach to EVERYTHING is either coat it in cornmeal & deep fry it, or rub it in a paste made of several types of chiles & honey and grill it. And of course, he's got to use a sweet potato somewhere & make a tamale. ALWAYS. It's great and all but so boring. And totally un-iron chef.

i know but there are plenty of times that i think the non iron chef is clearly the winner and they dont win
i wish they would not let the judges see who's cooking what, and when they bring it out dont have the chef talk about it or let the judges know who made what
then i think we'd have more of the reg chefs beating the iron chefs, sometimes i think the judges give extra points just b/c its the iron chefs dish but if they dont know who made it then they'd be more honest in their points
