View Full Version : Living Alone: What Do You Like Most/Least?

I live alone and I was thinking about the plusses and the minuses about it:
Plus
Can leave a mess and no one cares
Can watch whatever you want on TV, listen to whatever music whenever you want
Can leave the bathroom door open
Can come and go whenever and wherever you please with
Don't have to deal with annoying roommate(s)
Minus
Expensive-- can't "split" rent/utilities
No one to pick up mail, take care of pets, water plants while you're gone
Gets a little lonely sometimes
What do you love/hate about living alone? What do you love/hate about living with significant other/roommates/family?

WOW!
You really covered everything I would have put down!!! This weekend I had friends come to town for the big march downtown, and when they left it was a mixed feeling of having my place back to myself, and feeling a tad lonely.
All in all, for me the plusses out-weigh the other stuff - I can live pretty cheaply if I need to, and I have friends near by who can watch my ancient cat. Also, I really like being alone, and rarely consider myself lonely. I have a lot of friends in the area, and keep in close contact with them and many of my friends who live outside of DC.
I hate answering to anyone else other than myself. I take pride in my empty refrigerator, and know that whatever it wrong with my place, I am responsible, good or bad. Fighting for the bathroom is also a big one, as is trying to fit yourself around someone else's routine.
As silly as it sounds, about the only thing I really miss is having someone there to watch television with. And, I have to admit that there is a nice pleasantness to having people in your place - makes it feel more like a home. If only life was like a sit-com, and all of my friends lived in the same building, in their own apartments!!!

There's nothing I dislike about living alone.

I lived with a boyfriend for over a year, and lived with a roommate (female friend from work), who turned out to be a bonafide psycho. It is so fucking expensive to live on your own in this area, but I would never have another roommate, unless it was living with a significant other. Petrina, I think you covered most of the pros and cons. Another pro for living alone (for me at least), is that the cats sleep with me every night, as opposed to when I lived with the ex and they would just come in every so often.

Agreed! I've been in the same place now for 9 years - in that time I've had 4 roommates (two male / two female), not counting the former fiance. I've been solo now since the autumn of 2000, and it really is great.
Thankfully I'm making enough where I don't have to have a roommate.

I have never lived alone.
I lived with my parents, then i moved in to my apartment that i live in now with my girlfriend. so i can only speak for living with someone else.
Pro - you are never lonely and there is always someone around to watch TV/Movies with and make comments to.
Someone to help around the house, like splitting the cleaning or help cleaning up after dinner
Rent is 1/2 price in a sense
Cons - You are never alone, so if you are having a bad day, and they want to talk, it can get irratating.
Decorating decisions need to be made as a group, not just what you want
In the end, i don't think i would ever want to live alone if I could avaoid it, but it would not be so bad. Just a lot more time for me to post on here and check my fantasy baseball league.

Not silly at all! I lived with my best friend about 10 years ago. We were two miserable and completely lost 20-somethings, but we had a lot of fun. It was great having someone to watch the Simpsons with and eat dinner with.
I would never have another roommate, unless it was living with a significant other.
Yeah, I was married so I don't foresee going back to having a roommate unless there was no way I could afford to live alone. I just refinanced so I'm set!
OH! Almost forget the number one plus for living alone... PORN!

You have cats, right?
So if you die while you're alone, your cats will most likely eat your eyes after you keel over.
BIG minus.

Never lived alone, went right from my parents apartment to getting married... Once in a while i ponder what it might have been like to have lived alone or with a roommate.
Back in my early 20's i'm sure it would've been alot of partying and trying to get laid. I'm a little bit of a neat freak so there would probably have been confrontation with a roommate about 'the dishes' and 'the bathroom' and such...
Living with my wife and two daughters is cool (i better say it's cool :) ) The house has pretty good space so there's places to be if you want to be alone. There's times when the girls want to be on the computer or in their room watching TV, or listening to music, or all three at once. Then there are times when they want to hang out with Dad, 'you know' when they're hungry or need a ride or some dough ;)
I work nights and weekends and my wife works days so it keeps the marriage real healthy
;) 'thank god she don't read this board' i think
Actually it works out best for the girls, it cut down on child care when they were younger and it helps us share all that's involved with their activities...

OH! Almost forget the number one plus for living alone... PORN!
Ok...that's just weird...I thought of that later today as well and was thinking *AH! HA! Now I have something ORIGINAL to contribute to that thread!*
To celebrate, I enjoyed some porn, and thought how great it was not living with anyone I have to hide it from, or sneak a peak when they are away, or actually get so desperate I call in a sick day to watch it.
Porn.
God's proof that he loves us and wants us to be happy.
Or maybe that was beer?
Either way...porn is definately something best when it is NOT shared!
(And not to be outdone...this is Sid, born 10/18/86. Not as big as he once was, but still loves to romance ugly toes; I imagine him loving on my corpse when I'm dead - he loves living alone too).
