SEOUL (Reuters) - Many North Koreans died a "heroic death" after last week's train explosion by running into burning buildings to rescue portraits of leader Kim Jong-il and his father, according to the North's official media. (http://uk.news.yahoo.com/040428/325/es839.html)
why do they love him so much?

I guess it was better way to go than by starving to death.

It's just the way their culture is. I saw a documentary on North Korea, and they were interviewing poltical prisoners who had escaped the gulags. Not exactly people who would be sympathetic to the country's rulers. But they said that when they heard Kim Jong Il's father has died, they still cried. The ruling family is viewed almost as living gods, like the emperor of Japan was once viewed.

It's also possible that the story is propaganda from the North.
Part of it is cultural. Asians tend to trust theirs leaders to a degree. Also, suffering is relative. They might be starving, but starving is much easier when you don't know other people are eating (and actually THROWING FOOD AWAY in our case).

its a reuters article from seoul, not to mention its believable. totalitarian propaganda will do that to people.

It's also possible that the story is propaganda from the North.
Upon further consideration, this is definitely much more likely.

They admitted the story could not be independently verified.
I should correct myself on Asians. A lot of them trust their leaders, but a good portion are also very pragmatic and understand their government is for sale
