Did anyone see this last night on PBS? If not, the full episode will be online tomorrow.
The day he was inaugurated there were several of us who met with him at the governor's mansion," says Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission. "And among the things he said to us was, 'I believe that God wants me to be president.'

I love God, but religion sucks. It should be banned. Much more dangerous than People talking about anal sex on the radio, or having a contest that involves sex in public to win beer.

If PBS should be saved for anything, it's "Frontline."
I've been watching it for nearly a decade, and it's easily the best investigative news/documentary program on TV.

They rerun the whole episode online starting today, I believe. The quote is also mentioned in the introduction - the first thing of the introduction, actually, of the website.

BTW, does he realize that not everyone in the US is christian? I mean what about all the Jews, Muslims...Catholics, Protestants, Lutherans...mormans...Athiasts(sp?)...
I still dont see how he is still in charge of the country. And I still dont see why he is doing well in the polls. I mean Im not a big Kerry supporter but the man is just not fit to be president...

Has the president, in any speech given to the nation, ever said Jesus or said that Jesus is the only way to get to heaven?

Catholics, Protestants, Lutherans
They are all Christians. They're just seperated into different groups for some differences revolving around traditions and such.

He's a born-again Christian. That is what born-again Christians believe. So he either believes that or he's lying about his beliefs. Whether or not he actually says that in a speech to the nation is a matter of politics.

So do YOU believe that believing in Jesus Christ as our lord and savior is the only way to get into heaven?

As a born again Christian I belive that the only way tog et to heaven is to believe in your heart that Jesus died for your sins.
With that being said, I don't think that only people who are born again Christians go to heaven. Catholics, and any other group that believes that Jesus is the only way to get to heaven will also go to heaven.
And your 'born-again' when you accept Jesus into your heart and try to live a life that is Godly. You are "born-again" because of the blood that was shed. A common way to show this is by being baptized.
EDIT:While my faith is strong in that, I also question my faith. I don't see how God's chosen people, people of the Jewish faith, can go to hell.

<a href="http://www.globalsecurity.org/intell/library/reports/2004/800-mp-bde.htm" target="_blank">Bush to Appear on Christian TV for Prayer Day</a>
For Bush, the broadcast is an opportunity to address a sympathetic evangelical audience without the risk of alienating secular or non-Christian viewers, because it will not be carried in full by the major television networks.
The event's organizers denied that it amounts to a tacit political endorsement.
"We're in an election year, and we believe God cares who's in those positions of authority," said Mark Fried, spokesman for the National Day of Prayer Task Force. "But we're not endorsing a candidate -- just praying that God's hand will be on the election."
As in recent years, today's observances will begin with a congressional prayer session on Capitol Hill in the morning, followed by the afternoon ceremony at the White House. Under President Bill Clinton, Bright said in an interview this week, the White House observance was private and "very definitely lower key" than under Bush, who has invited print and television coverage each year.
Although "we were disappointed" with Clinton's low-profile celebration, Bright said, evangelicals did not make that sentiment public. "We have as enthusiastically promoted the Day of Prayer when Democrats were in office as when they were not," she said, adding that any "politicization" of the Day of Prayer "would be so unfortunate."
Bright did not hesitate, however, to express admiration for Bush: "I don't think he has a political agenda of his own. I think he's really trying to do what would please God."
She also made no apologies about the exclusion of Muslims and others outside of the "Judeao-Christian tradition" from ceremonies planned by the task force on Capitol Hill and in state capitals across the country. "They are free to have their own national day of prayer if they want to," she said. "We are a Christian task force."

After watching this, I am more scared then ever.
I can't help wondering if we have found the Anti-Christ and not elected him President.
All these Christians are always quoting the bible. That if you don't accept Jesus you won't go to heaven. This is the same freaking book that says that the Jews are God's chosen people. What we have here is a fight between Jesus and God. If I have to pick, I'm going with the BIG DOG, not his kid.
Seriously, this G.W.B. is a fightening person. I don't like where this religious road is leading. To me, his speech after 9/11 using the words "evil doers" sounds exactly what the terrorists that flew our planes into our buildings sound like.
Faith-based initiatives, yeah right, as long as they are christian. They gave no money to any Jewish or Muslim or non-christian religious social institions.
Bush is all religious but gives a big "FUCK YOU" to the environment. This is the most silly to me. Heaven might or might not exist. But this planet sure as shit does exist, but not if you keep exploiting it.
And, children seem to be our most precious commodity. They way every keeps trying to clean up the radio and the tv. Can't let the children hear that, can't let them see that. But Bush and his croonies could give a shit less if these precious children have a planet to grow up on. At least when the planet explodes or there is no more oxygen left they will not have died being subjected to fucking fart noises, and seeing a naked breast on tv.
AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
God damn it, I think I just gave myself a fucking brain aneurysm. I must go lie down now.

There was a joke in the 80s about Reagan being the anti-Christ, with the proof being that his three names had six letters each - Ronald Wilson Reagan = 666.
(How soon until we have another Omen-styled movie where the family has a child born on June 6, 2006??? - How WEIRD is it going to be when we get to that day; all the expected mothers inducing labor a day early, just to avoid the stigma of that birthdate for their children?!?!)
If I were to believe in the anti-Christ, I would put him more in either a supportive, behind the scenes position (Wolfowitz, Cheney or Rummy - Hell, maybe even Laura or Barbara Sr.!!!), or in a position of major influcence - someone the entire world feels safe with and trusts - of course, witht he country so polorized, there's not much chance for everyone getting behind one person; it's going to be 50/50 regardless.
Maybe Chris Rock!?

<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/17/magazine/17BUSH.html?oref=login&pagewanted=print&position=" target="_blank">Without a Doubt; Faith, Certainty and the Presidency of George W. Bush</a>
Ron Suskind wrote an article for this week's NYT Magazine that encapsulates the fundamental problem that I have with Bush as president: he operates on articles of faith over reason. I have no problem with his Christianity - every president we've ever had was a Christian. But everything that I've seen from him - every speech, interview or debate I've seen from him, the decisions he's made from elevating the relatively trivial issue of same-sex marriage to the level of proposing a Constitutional Ammendment to the decision to sidetrack the war on terror with the Iraq War - tells me that he is fundamentally driven by his personal faith rather than by reason and logic. This is the reason he never admits mistakes - because he's guided by god and god doesn't make mistakes.
I think this is a dangerous man. I think the way he leads the country is a step back to the pre-enlightenment days of theocracies and monarchies - where the leader rules by the divine will of god, and the will of the people is meaningless in that equation, (you obey god by obeying your ruler). I would have no problem with Bush Sr. back in the White House. I think he had the life experiences to shape an understanding of the world's complexity and to see the value of open debate, respecting the opinions and values of others, and accepting the infallibility of your own ideas and having the ability to change. I see none of this in George W. Bush.
Anyway, this is a damn good article and should raise serious questions among Republicans about the type of world-view that a president should have in the 21st century.

Every Bush supporter should read this article. Maybe it will strenghten your support, maybe it will weaken it.
The questions are undeniable.
As for my take - here is why this man is so dangerous.
Joe Biden was telling a story, a story about the president. ''I was in the Oval Office a few months after we swept into Baghdad,'' he began, ''and I was telling the president of my many concerns'' -- concerns about growing problems winning the peace, the explosive mix of Shiite and Sunni, the disbanding of the Iraqi Army and problems securing the oil fields. Bush, Biden recalled, just looked at him, unflappably sure that the United States was on the right course and that all was well. '''Mr. President,' I finally said, 'How can you be so sure when you know you don't know the facts?'''
Biden said that Bush stood up and put his hand on the senator's shoulder. ''My instincts,'' he said. ''My instincts.''
Biden paused and shook his head, recalling it all as the room grew quiet. ''I said, 'Mr. President, your instincts aren't good enough!'''

Good article Here:
From it:
How powerful is the religious right?
Roughly 50 million to 70 million Americans-a quarter of the adult population-identify themselves as evangelical Christians. It's a larger voting group than labor unions, African-Americans, or Hispanics. In 2000, according to national exit polls, evangelicals accounted for about 40 percent of George W. Bush's votes. They've also played a critical role in giving the Republican Party control of both houses of Congress. Rev. Jerry Falwell, a Southern Baptist preacher who has helped lead conservative Christians into the political arena, boasts that the Republican Party "does not have the head count to elect a president without the support of religious conservatives." It's a claim that no one disputes.
