I do a lot of writing and my English teacher told meI had some talent. She said I was writing well aboe my age and that I should enter some of my stuff into contests. I was wondering if anyone knew any literary magazines that I might be able to send my stuff to. Thanks.

On a serious note Keith, why didn't you ask your teacher for some ideas? Also, try to Google it. And start a topic on the message board... oops

Try Cobblestone Publishing, a division of Carus Publishing Co.

Holy shit, if his posts of the past are any indication, that Penthouse Forum letter would be fucking hilarious.
Seriously though, Keith, just go to Barnes and Noble and look through the magazines. Theres a whole bunch of literary magazines that you'll find there that would be of help to you.
Or, i've heard of this new thing that people are using to look up information, in which the information desired is beamed instantaneously and directly to you. What was it called? Oh yeah, the internet. If you need help, just contact me, and i'll see if i can locate it for you.

Here's another thing i just thought of; there's always writers groups out there (both on the internet and in real life) that will read and critique and help with your writing growth.
Just try this list (http://www.writerswrite.com/groups.htm), or just look for yourself.

Forget about Magazines. If you wish to get read; there's the internet. Plenty of places to put up a website in a few minutes, and start pasting away. Even if its one of those AOL Hometown Thingys or whatever, your level of exposure, and ease of which you can show others your work increases by 100 fold over any LitMag.
And start an on-line journal; if you aren't writing for an hour a day. If nothing else, it will kick your ass into writing. If you have nothing to say; describe the weather.
And Write.

Your right Mike.
One of the reasons I would like to get something published is because it would look good on a college application.
But I do thoroughly enjoy writing so I might do one of those journals. I started a blog awhile back and wrote to entries about love, and about death. I thought they were actually pretty good.

Thats true, plus you can take on the persona of a french hooker (http://belledejour-uk.blogspot.com/) and the offers to publish your books come in in no time.
She/he/it has had offers thrown at her to write novels for a few companies.

Thats the spirit KBB.
Hey, it'd be great if prose just poured out of us naturally, but it's tough. Actually, trying to translate what going on in a person's head using blobs of ink on a page is really a form of Magic. I mean when the real writers, which I am not, Write. When you read something with a Voice, and you read it and go Holy Shit thats Exactly how I felt, but couldnt find the Right Combinations of Ink Blobs. Which is all it really is.
And the real Magic, is that you can open these books and scan the ink blobs and BOOM! youre inside the head of Shakespeare, or Newton, or Stephen King, or Arthur Miller or Tom Robbins Clancy or Higgins Clark or Rowling or Tolkein or name your faves here. You can crawl inside someone mind, 100s of years in the past. And you can make a whole fucking universe, like Tolkein did, with the same 26 letters you have at your disposal. Sad. Books put TV to shame; maybe I can convert a few.

Oh, and dont be afraid, like I was, to ask someone what a word is. The 'Dictionary' hyperlinks are my most used. I'm clueless on the big 5 dollar words, so when I read of Zeitgeist and Anthropomorphism, I have to stop dead, and go look it up. Same in conversation. I have no problem asking someone 'sorry, what does that mean? i dont know stuff in this area.'
And this is a Hugely Powerful tool for your Toolbox; because there Are words out their that explain, very well some things we can't, well ... explain.
Here's one I stopped someone dead in their tracks with: Gestalt. I was like, What?! Gestalt? Ges-Who? Sounds like some German General, I thought. If you don't know what it means, look it up, and you'll find out what it means, AND why I chose it.

i wish i could get back into writing. When i was in school, i used to write my ass off, but now its almost non-existent. i think it was the deadline that did it for me, but now with all the time in the world, if i actually do get around to write, i end up doing it so leisurely that i end up reading it over and just getting disgusted.
When i wrote in school, i would just sit down, write pages and think nothing of it, and was consistently told how good any of it was, and in writing classes, i was always told how any of my writings outshined anyone elses in the class.
i've had novels in my head for years, but for some reason they just never got done.

My blog. (http://keithy19.blogspot.com/)
I started this awhile back. Then I started writing a 'novel' entitled 'May Flies.' I wrote one chapter for that and I am currently working on the second.
*The only thing, if anything you might get from my blog, is that I was reading High Fidelity and I was really enjoying it.

Jon is SO right
oúfay ( P ) Pronunciation Key (f)
n. Offensive Slang
Used as a disparaging term for a white person.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Possibly of West African origin.]
Word History: The commonly seen etymology of ofayPig Latin for foeis of less interest than the more likely story of this word's origins. The word, which is first recorded in the first quarter of the 20th century, must have been in use much longer if it is, as some scholars think, borrowed from an African source. Although this source has not been pinned down, the suggested possibilities are in themselves interesting. One would trace it to the Ibibio word afia, "white or light-colored." Another would have it come from Yoruba ofe, a word that was said in order to protect oneself from danger. The term was then transferred to white people, regarded as a danger to Black people throughout the wretched days of slavery and beyond.

Great advice. I always do this whenever I read a word I don't know. I also try to guess what it means just by looking at it.
I'm currently in the process of trying to write a book, I have the whole story in my head, but trying to get it all on paper is damn near impossible. Especially when working full time and going to school at night. Sometimes when I think about it, I feel that it's a really dumb idea. And who am I fooling, I'm no writer. But it's always been my life's dream to write books, so I kinda have to start somewhere.
