Ive been wanting to start using a work out supplement type of thing for a while. Ive read a lot about creatine and the only short term side effects appear to be muscle cramps. So do any of you guys use it? How has it or hasnt it worked for you? Should I take it? And what does it do? Any input would be very helpful...

Let me preface my comments by saying that I'm a pharmaceutical chemist, not a biological or health professional, so be sure to do your own research and/or consult a doctor.
That being said, here's what I can offer you on creatine: The main side effect of Creatine is that it works against your body's chemistry for hydration, hence the partial reason for the muscle cramps. So if you're going to use it, make sure to hydrate yourself beyond normal workout precautions, during & especially after a workout. And don't use it for extended periods of time. Cycle on & off (ie: 2 weeks on, at least one week off).

I'm not a workout guy, but creatine isn't bad for you. Just drink more water as the Crippler already suggested. It isn't a steroid or anything. Go for it, kemosabe.

I've never heard of creatine being bad, but I know people who have had varying success using it and you always wonder just how much the creatine is in fact helping them. They mostly tended to be the in the gym seven days a week types anyhow so I always figured they'd look the same creatine or not. In any case, I found this article that at least on a cursory glance seems to consider some of the reasearch done on creatine and suggest ways to use it most efficiently/effectively/cost-effectively.

I was on the creatine for about a month or so during college to try to create a little breathing room between me and the guy trying to take my spot on the football team. I'll tell you this: I noticed no significant gain in my strength or energy and by the time I stopped taking it, my muscle cramps were so severe, I could barely lift the weights anyway. My neck got so stiff I couldn't turn my head and the stomach cramps were bad enough I couldn't bend over or stand quite straight.
The other thing is that it hasn't been around long enough for anyone to know the true effects of it. In the beginning, people thought steroids weren't that harmful either.
We all want some get big quick scheme to help us. Truth is you gotta show up 4 or 5 times a week at the gym to get results.

Hey Crippler, what would be the reason for cycling on and off?
