Anyone else pick up this DVD box set?

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0001EQHXO.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Easily in my top 5 of favorite TV series of all time. Plus, the box set helped ease the pain of the "Newsradio" set being pushed back.

Anyone else a fan?

Short version...titular groups of characters, set in a Michigan high school in 1980.

If like great dramas, it's got what you need. If you like smart comedy, it's got what you need.

Look it up on the IMDB, you lazy shits.

It was a toss up between this and the Kids In The Hall Season 1 set. I had to go with the Kids becasue I never saw an episode of Freaks. I just heard of its greatness. I was also a big fan of Undeclared which I think either had some of the same cast or the same writers.

No, because I found out about it a day AFTER I bought the regular version. At first I didn't really care, but after getting through most of this set and seeing how great the extras are, I'm sorely tempted to shell out for the special edition.

And yes, Waffle, "Undeclared's" creater was also the co-creator and executive producer of F&G, Judd Apatow. A couple cast members also crossed over, either in regular or guest roles.

I loved, loved, loved this show. Easily one of my favorites. I got it the day it came out, and I think it was less than the $55.00 at Best Buy. Even at that price, the extras alone are worth it.

After seeing it again I've come around to Ron's way of thinking that more American shows should be like they do in England - where a season is only a few episodes, and after 2 or 3 seasons they call it a day.

It's hard to imagine them eventually ruining the show, but you never, never know.

Next up, I want them to put ACTION on DVD.

Curtoid's right...this show only had 18 episodes in its only season, as opposed to the usual 22, and it feels "better."

TV season are just too goddamn long in America on the networks. They need to dump a good 4-6 episodes each season and tighten things up.

Of course there is the other extreme. HBO has short seasons for most of its shows. Then they make you wait far too long before bringing out the next season.

The networks argue that they are not big fans of the short and limited seasons because they can't make as much money in syndication. They need a larger number of episodes in order to sell the "package".

Of course, one could argue that with the high number of reality shows currently being aired, the chances for syndication are already dramatically reduced in proportion to the total number of different series' in the lineup.

My feeling is that if the show is a true hit, then what money is lost on syndication, will be made up for in advertising dollars. Also, the more quality shows that a network can produce and put on the air, the more a viewer will consistantly stay with that particular network. This means that you can sell entire nights to advertisers rather than smaller blocks.

Unfortunately, to put something like a limited run or shorter season in place requires a willingness to give up the planned syndication base, and to take a risk that the ratings will come. Given how quickly new series are being cut after just 2 or 3 episodes, there also isn't time to "build" an audience. Well that and playing hopscotch with time slots.

$55.00 might seem like a lot, but it's worth it. There's also a reason it costs that much. Those involved with the show decided that they would release it with the original music, which means an assload of royalties. The number I saw bandied about was something like 1 million just for song rights. Is it worth it? Yeah, I think so. The music chosen for the episodes is pitch perfect. (The use of Styx's "Come Sail Away" alone from the school dance episode still kills me.) Judging by the number of people who have never heard of this show, this isn't going to be a huge seller. The cost of securing rights has to be spread among all of the DVD buyers. The price is set just to cover costs, I would assume. Nobody's getting rich off this release.

Frankly, though, the regular set is 18 hour-long episodes with lots of extras. By comparison, a Sopranos season set has less show, fewer extras and costs more.

Well, it's taken me over a week, but I got through everything on the DVD set...and oddly enough, I'm mildly depressed. I've come to like watching these characters SO much, it's kinda sad that it's all over...which is either the mark of a brilliant, excellent show...or I'm just psychotic.

I now MUST buy the special edition.

I went to the website link and couldn't figure out what was on the extra special edition. Anyone know what you are really getting for the extra amount?

The networks argue that they are not big fans of the short and limited seasons because they can't make as much money in syndication. They need a larger number of episodes in order to sell the "package".

I think, because of the DVD box sets, the syndication landscape has changed - many shows, like SOPRANOS and BUFFY will make more money in DVD sales (well, maybe not BUFFY) than through regular syndication agreements. FAMILY GUY is the best example out there - a brilliant show that somehow limped through 3 seasons, (or 2 1/2), and on DVD became such a huge hit, they are bringing it back for more.

The worst abuse right now is the upcoming NORTHERN EXPOSURE box set - season one is really expensive, especially when you factor in that there were less than 10 episodes. Season 2 is also only a handfull, but it's not included. I think it's Univeversal that's handling this, which surprises me because they did such a wonderful job with the classic Universal Monsters Legacy box sets that came out last week, but of course they were working the tie-in with VAN HELSING. Anyway, Universal should have released seasons 1 & 2 together, and not take advantage of the fans.

One of you egg heads buy it and lemme know what's on here.

Some of my favorite out-takes were the kids cracking up, and the one kid getting mad, during the scenes they were supposed to be watching porn.

To say this show mirrored my life would be an gross understatement!

No kidding.

Even though I encountered most of this stuff a good 15 years later than when this show was set, it's spooky how close it gets. My trajectory from super geek (Basically 7th-9th grade) to slacker/floater/burnout (10th and onwards) seems to be pretty typical, if this series is any indication...

When was the show set? 1981?

I would have been about 13 or 14 then.

On any given day I could have been in either camp - I avoided becoming a complete burnout because I was always uber careful, because of my brother, and I was never the geekiest nerd in nerdville (if WELCOME TO THE DOLLHOUSE taught us anything, it's that you can always find someone lower to make fun of!), but, when I went to St. Stephens in 8th and 9th grade, I was pretty low on the food chain, and was picked on quite a bit. Later, in boarding school, it was better because most of my friends were the burnouts and other punks.

It was odd - because at school, around the various cliques, I was always one form or another of an outside, but around home, around my friends, things were normal - even if my friends shunned me at school, in the neighborhood we had always grown up together, so we were cool.

In Junior high (maybe even 6th grade) I found an 8mm porno film that belonged to my dad, and watched it with a friend of mine - I thought we were going to be physically ill. Neither of us were convinced the guy's cock was REALLY that big!

A couple of years later I found (hidden in the liquor cabinat) a Beta Max tape with some vintage, vintage 70s pornography (DEEP THROAT, DEVIL IN MISS JONES and BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR). The first time I had a viewing for all of my friends (about 5 of us), we had just come inside to cool off after playing football outside. This was when Bill Cosby's Jello Pops were really big, so we all had one, and then went to watch the porn.

The immediate weirdness, uncomfortableness, ironic humor hit us all, one by one, as we were all sitting there sucking on these pops, watching Linda Lovelace go down on Harry Reems. When the mass collective realized what was going on, we jumped up, turned the tape off, and pretended nothing strange had just happened.

Ahhhh...memories!

bump for linda cardellini, such a babe, i fell for her when freaks and geeks first aired and boy did she turn out to be a beauty.

looks great as a blonde or brunette, looked amazing in grandma's boy.

soooo anwyay i was just rewatching freaks and geeks and decided to search for a thread about it, such a shame it didnt last long, very good show.

i remember way back when watching the first episode and they started playing come sail away at the dance i immediately thought "oh no, sam is doomed!"

(he asks cindy to dance and just as they get to the floor it stops being a slow song)

but then the end of that episode was really good with sam and lindsay both dancing and everything seems like it might just be ok... ahhhhhhh hehe...

anywho, great show and linda cardellini...
