Let's just not discuss why I was reading USA Today... in any case, this was a great article.

"I tried both the Atkins and South Beach diets, but pound for pound, protein is a lot more expensive than carbs," she says. "The South Beach diet recommends fish about three times a week. I'd have to eat canned tuna three times a week to afford it, and I get tired of eating the same foods.

"Plus, you have to cook everything yourself," she says. "Following it on a day-to-day schedule would be completely impossible because of the complexity of the recipes and the cost of the foods."

Nevermind that being on a diet isn't really any more expensive than not being on one if you have even a few brain cells and can figure out how to shop effectively. And nevermind that you're probably going to end up spending a lot more money if you eat a crappy diet and are overweight because you're going to be sick all the time...
Nobody ever takes any responsibility for themselves these days. If this isn't the pussification of america, I don't know what is. HOLY SHIT you mean I have to COOK FOOD FOR MYSELF? I'm going to blame McDonald's because I'm a fat and too lazy to eat anything else, you know, like maybe healthy food.

how about the common sense diet, which is eat less than you usually do, and do not snack during the day when you are at your desk.

On a side note, i think some of the scientific people may like this one.

I was at the airport picking up my parents and it was raining. I was sitting looking out one of the windows and there is a guy behind me talking to some chick. i think he was trying to impress her, so i do not think it was his girl friend, but maybe a friend of a friend or something. anyway he said (and this is almost word for word" )
"These planes are having no trouble taking off today because the air is so thick with water. You know, the heavier the air, the better it can support the weight of the plane. Thats why its safe to fly in the rain, its actually better."

Now, i know all about how planes fly, Bernoulli principal, blah blah blah. Unless I am REALLY mistaken, this guy was an idiot. But it made me think how most people not only have no common sense, but they are really un-informed on so many topics, but they speak about them like they are an expert.
This guy was talking like he was an engineer for Boeing. Anyway this goes with the diet thing because people are idiots and have no idea's about science, the way the body works, calories, NOTHING. We need to build better science and math education from the ground up.

Numerous studies have found that grocery stores in lower-income areas offer far fewer healthful food options.

To help ends meet on a $42,000-a-year salary ($26,000 after taxes and health insurance premiums), she shops at several stores to get the best food prices.

See sometimes people aren't fat and lazy, they just have no alternatives. Sometimes they just don't make enough money. The women is traveling to several stores trying to get the best possible prices, that doesn't sound lazy to me.

Come on TooCute, I expect better than this from you. You get a D- on this post.

Nah, I'm with her on this one.

I'm poor as hell and I'm still able to go out of my way to stay in shape. If I started eating "junk" instead, I'd save MAYBE $50-$100 a week, tops.

i would say more like 100 per month. a week sounds like a lot. thats 400 a month or almost 5000 a year, after taxes. if you were to figure out how much of your salary you would save, that would be around 8000 a year.
The most expensive thing i eat every week is steak. i eat a t-bone once per week. i get them at costco now, and they average only 10-11 dollars per steak. really not bad at all.
make some mushrooms and rice with it, and you have a sub 30 dollar dinner that is really good.

Well crackheads are pretty thin...

I've noticed a few situations where it's cost WAY too much to buy a healthy meal. There's a place where I work called Juice for Life. I went in to buy a banana/strawberry/peach drink, it's half a banana, 4 strawberries, and a scoop of sliced peaches put in a blender with ice and fruit punch...to make a 16oz cup.....$4.50!!

fuckin retarded!

it's all up to the individual what goes in his or her mouth... regardless of economic status although it can play a 'tiny' factor

i always think if i was wealthy enough to have someone shop for my groceries and cook my meals that i could have a better/wiser diet that tastes great. and i'd be able to enjoy it in a more 'stress-free' enviornment...

i haven't had a fast food hamburger in over 15 years, but i think a bag of frozen vegatables and some pasta (3 meals) is the same price as couple of fast food burgers.

Yeah if the market has fruit, vegetables, and chicken, (which pretty much every market I've been to has had, and I used to live in the ghetto) then it should be no problem finding healthy food at a cheap price.
